The official (Bah Humbug) Olympics thread

Came in budget and on time ;)

BUT, A diabolical waste of money and time, it only benefits London (and its the north that's taking the hits) and from other sources has already rocketed already expensive areas to live even higher...

BAH HUMBUG¬!

The only 'Londoners' I know with tickets are from Scotland and 'The North' respectively! And they are not even going to any of the new buildings (Wimbledon).

yep , i'm just waiting for the ink to dry , then i'm going to make a killing on ebay. Photoshop is a great thing

I'll have two for the 100m final please - is there a special TP discount? :D

I'm just really excited about how great the Blackwall Tunnel is going to cope

It's crap enough in the mornings as it is

As far as i'm concerned its a load of crap too :D:D
What a waste of money it could be much better spent for example on conservation
Butterfly conservation are having the small amount they get from the government for conservation projects stopped they do really good work, thats just one example yet they are spending billions on the bloody olympics
Pete

And if this fuel strike / shortage continues for any real length of time they are going to be screwed, running all these people about in coaches cars etc ;)

Out of interest why does this thread warrant being a sticky ? Or is that a daft question ?

Personally very much looking forward to the Olympics, lucky enough to have got some tickets. Alwasy enjoyed them and can remember being glued to the TV when Moscow, LA etc were on as a kid.

I think they will be very good for London and cement it's place as a great global city.

I can just about see the Olympic site from my house but don't want anything to do with the enormously expensive event.

I wonder if there would have been as greater an interest in hosting the Olympics if we had known at the outset

how much it would cost,

that green areas in east and south east London would be used and unavailable to the public,

that businesses would be advised to alter working patterns,

and that there will be lanes dedicated to Olympic only traffic in central London.

I think transport in London is generally pretty good, but it is creaking now, without the extra volume.

I'd like it to be a financial success for London, but it is many years since there was the Olympics made money.

Dave

However, there is one good thing to come from hosting the Games - the wonderful BBC2 programme "Twenty Twelve"

As my mum would say
"to make your tongue wag" :D
Or maybe its to keep all the "anti" Olympics threads in one place. ;)

I just hope that I can manage my viewing and listening schedules in such a way so as to see and hear as little as possible of them.

olympic comittee anti counterfeiting hotline

A bloke i know who runs one of the local tat (sorry I mean souvenier) shops round here has just asked me if i can use my photoshop skills to knock out some designs for T shirts featuring the olympic logos

I pointed out that that might be a teensy weensy bit, you know , illegal :rules: - but he wasnt phased by that - he particularly wants a yacht featuring the 2012 logo on the sail which he then plans to "print on T shirts dead cheap" and fly trade arround weymouth, apparently there'd be "something in it for your trouble" (yeah like a court summons)

Tempting though the idea of fleecing the gullible and credulous is, I think i'll pass

(but doubtless he'll find someone else with less sense / scruples )

Well I think you're all miserable ***** - it will be great for our country and great for our sportspersons too

Without the chance to win a 'Gold' medal (actually made of silver and gold plated) what sense in one's life would there be in skills such as hop, skip and jump ??? Or being able to jump really high in such a way that landing without a massive cushion would break your neck ??? Or being able to throw a ball & chain a long way ??? Or being able to run a fair distance while jumping fences and landing in ditches ??? etc. etc. etc.

These, and numerous other skills, are what the Olympics is really all about

But more than that its about celebrating Man's ability to spend so much time & effort on totally pointless things, and vast sums of money needlessly too while the poor get poorer and the hungry hungrier :bang:

And while all that bumkum is going on there are major benefits for the rest of the UK too (I'm hoping), as I suspect we'll be spared the X-factor jungle ice Celebrity talent wipeout [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] - looking forward to it already

Hmm I'm not convinced that one is actually better than the other :D

I'm really excited about the new events

after the training this summer there should be a strong showing from the Uk team in the petrol bomb throwing , while both the 'fencing of stolen goods' and 'fleeing from police in a stolen punto' events should also be an easy win for the host nation.

:D

Based on his reputation he'll come back as a poltergeist and leave a Rolls Royce in the swimming pool :)

Pointless waste of money.

I have the whole of Due South and all the old Comic Strip lined up just in case there really isn't enough to record from the tv between now and then.

The olympic torch is being run through Stoke at some point. I wonder if they'll do up the bits that will be seen so that it doesn't look such a dump?

It's an absolute farce. You couldn't make it up, and even if you did people just wouldn't believe you!

To be fair there *must* be some people up this end of the country (North West) who have some interest in it, but I don't personally know anyone who cares much at all.

It seems any pretence that sport is the prime reason for it has been long overtaken by big business.

Yep - off the Monday before it starts back the day after it ends. Just have to deal with the airport chaos

The day after is too soon! The airport will be choka with people still trying to leave. Your plane will be diverted to Frankfurt and you will have to extend your holiday another week!

Sadly you're probably right, but the Olympics already hurt my business alot, I can't afford to be away longer

I was down there for the stadium opening at the weekend and tbh I'd give it a mixed review.

Stadium is pretty good, and the airport style security system they had going on was fairly painless, plus the relaxed camera rules (large telephoto's openly being waved through) was reassuring.

When in the Olympic park however, the numbered gates were not used, with people being ordered to "any gate at all" resulting in delays etc etc.

Plenty of toilets, access, bla bla bla, it will be a tourist pleaser, but it wasn't a jaw dropper.

Stuck in Greenwich on my commute to the City for the second day in a row due to the Blackwall Tunnel. How the frick will it cope in July? Argh

This is what the traffic is like on a regular basis. Even during school holidays:

I wonder if all the teams based south of the river are aware of that. Australia, for example, are baisng themselves at Tonbridge School. I wonder how many Australians are going to be late for their events :D:D

probably none - after all you have the Zil, sorry Games lanes set aside for the Olympic Family :gag: so they can whizz on by

Not coming up to the blackwall tunnel you dont. Games lan is further south, but the approach to the blackwall tunnel will not have a games lane

fair enough......pretty sure they have a route sorted though

They don't have much of a choice. The route to Stratford from Tonbridge would pretty much have to go through the Blackwall Tunnel. Unless they use the Woolwich ferry or Rotherhithe Tunnel. Another alternative would be going up through Elephant and Castle and over Tower Bridge and get to Stratford from the West. Or lastly Dartford Crossing and down A13

(and yes, these are the alternative routes our commuter coach takes when the Blackwall Tunnel is shut )

They haven't picked me for the shooting team (probably because I'm crap but I like to think it's because I'd show the rest of them up:)

So I'm not interested in it...

Seeing as how australia is pretty much the only western country not to have a recession they are probably going to ferry their atheletes to events by heliflopter

The Torch finally arrives at the streets of East London . . .

Torch.jpg

 love the cartoon.

The 'torch' passes through Bristol on Tuesday/Wednesday next apparantly, been reports today that the city seems to be in chaos as they've already started to block some roads off
