The Not-Quite-So-New Photography Cartoon Thread

I guess I asked for that :p

Very clever Ian

BTW Christine, you are correct

I think it's time to blow the dust off this thread and put in a fresh new cartoon . . .

. . . And so here it is. :) :D

Just caught up Ian

Not sure how this one will go down with us photographers, but . . . what the heck anyway. Besides, the old 'uns are always the best 'uns. :naughty: :D

You doing these on a design tablet I take it?

Cheers for all the lovely comments!

Actually, I use a mixture of traditional and modern technology methods when it comes to producing my cartoons for the internet.

I do a quick draft line drawing on paper using a pencil, so that I know where things go. Usually takes me about ten minutes (more if the cartoon is complex).

I then place that rough draft onto a special lamp that lights up the paper from underneath, and using a clean sheet I trace it all out in black line art using a thin tipped felt tip - making sure there are no gaps in those lines (reason to follow in the third caption).
Then I scan it in high-contrast greyscale (to get rid of any smudges) and save it as a large Bitmap file (there is a reason for that too).

This stage is actually quicker than the pencil outline bit as most of the hard work has been done.

And using Paint Shop Pro 8 (prefer to use it due to it's simplicity and the ability to covert it back to 24 bit colour from 256 shade greyscale), I then just use the flood fill function to put in the colours. I wouldn't be able to do this all in JPEG due to the artifact effect (wouldn't flood fill it completely, instead there'll be white bits and pieces everywhere),
If there are gaps in the line art, that colour would spill over into the rest of the image! Something that has happened to me a lot of time, and when it does, I "undo" the flood, use the program's pen line to fill in any little gaps and start again. All this may usually only take me five minutes.
Finally, the image is reduced in size (800 width) and the caption is added, and the lot is then saved as a JPEG ready for show to the rest of the world!

And that's today's lesson on how I do my cartoons for the 'net!

I tried to use a tablet (I do have one) but it just was no substitute for the good ol' pen and pencil. But the colouring in bit using the computer is saving me a fortune and time in coloured pencils and felt tips, and it looks so much tidier and bolder for it.

Now, I must get around to doing a fresh photography related cartoon for this thread before people think I had neglected it all!

Wow, didn't think we would get a full tutorial. - Really appreciated, cheers man. Keep up the good work! :plusone:

Nice insight there Ian

I wonder if this'll happen to me . . .

Yep and you just "slide" right on in there Ian and clear you mind of any "negative" thoughts :coat: :D

Sometimes that boot fair bargain isn't what you had in mind . . . :suspect: :D

It's nice to get comments like this, makes it all worth my while. :)

Really enjoying this thread Ian, am always looking forward to the next cartoon. they are all just brilliant

Thank you for all those kind comments.

Anyway, time to drop off a fresh new cartoon! This time I'd try my hand at doing an actual strip, and it's not as easy as it looks!

Some of the middle aged amongst us may even recongise the buck-toothed character! He was quite well known in the weekly comic fraternity of the late 70's and early 80's.
