"The Nikon D600, D800 and D4 are the same camera inside!"

So Ken Rockwell says the D600/800/4 are all the same inside - what do you think?

The very latest IS THE best.

No doubt about it. It's obvious. Everyone must buy the latest because it's the best.

Now, I'm over to e-bay

Sorry folks, couldn't resist.

Eh, they're right, the 70-200 VRII IS better. I've owned both. But what they won't do is turn around and bash the 80-200 for not having VR. It's still a cracker of a lens, I would say, personally, as good optically as the 70-200. Maybe not quite as sharp, but for contrast and general 'IQ' - not much between them at all. I don't need the likes of KR to tell me this though.

Please go read more of his site, let us know when you've had enough and see him as the joke he really is. I never said he was wrong about 'everything' - he just constantly changes his views to suit whatever he is using at the time. 90% of the time it's an "I'm right, you are wrong" attitude that comes across.

I really don't get why anyone defends the guy, he's loaded and uses nothing but the best gear most of the time when not sprouting about it on his site.

If you have any splits in your focal range, not to worry, the 18-200 VR is the best lens ever made, besides the kit lens ... so he'll save you a right bundle ;)

He does it continuously though Phil. He actually advises people not to bother with RAW, just get it right in cam every time. May as well just use a compact going on a lot of his advice tbh.

How about learn to get it right, not rely on photoshop to fix it for you? Perhaps that is what he is trying to say? Thank to the Internet the idea of reading between the lines, thinking who is this aimed for and why has he written this have gone out the window and replaced with I must react to this and STRONGLY.

I went on a beginners photography course as it was cheap on groupon and my mum wanted to go and wanted my support. One of the other people on the beginners photography course was starting his own wedding photography business. Why was he on a beginners course?

Why would someone who knows lots about photography not realise who Ken Rockwells articles aimed at? Beginners, people starting off, people who need help. Once you get to a certain level, books, courses and websites can't help you. Practice and feedback will.

I'm usually happy enough with my images SOOC, thanks. I just like to process, to get the very best I can from them. I didn't need KR to tell me any of this either.

Right so is he wrong or is it a case it doesn't apply to you as you already have a wealth of knowledge. You already know he uses top end equipment, almost definitely shoots raw. So his advice isn't used by you, or him, or other photographers.

It is the I've passed the level of the advice from KR, by bashing him people will know how good I am. Realise his advice isn't aimed at you, realise his advice is for beginners. They learn in steps and it is obvious some people need as much help as they can. Others will read his site and in a few weeks, understood everything and moved on.

I learnt a lot from his site, I spent a good few evenings reading his site and learning. I have then taken this knowledge and built on it further. It doesn't make his website wrong, it just means it no longer suits me.

1st post, scroll down to the two comparison charts.

Oh yeah, see what you mean.

Nikon are clearly ripping everyone off - jeesh - sell all your Nikon gear and buy Canon.

Right - I'm off to e-bay. Again.

Sorry - I'll stop now ;)

My conclusion is KR isn't worth a discussion here. So work away ...

There are people like Ken on this forum. They think they are always right.

Nobody want to comment on that?

OK I will...

It's not a progression of bodies though... all he's doing is highlighting what anyone who knows anything already knows. Canon update their image processors more often than Nikon do... or DO they?

This just shows how little KR actually knows. They're not the same camera at all.

He states that the D4, D800 and D600 are essentially all the same, so just get a D600. Well.. what KR is clearly unaware of is that there are several versions of each Expeed3 chip. The D800 and D4 use the EI-158 which is optimised for speed in the D4, and 1080p, uncompressed 8bit video over HDMI and rolling shutter performance in the D800. The D600 uses the EL-175, which is optimised for the newer DDR3 memory on board.. but is actually a revamped Expeed 2 processor. The D600 he raves about is using last generation's image processor, the same as the D7000, albeit optimised for faster memory. (information courtesy of Nikon)

If you're gonna bore people with facts, he should at least get them right. All he's actually said there is that the 1DX is faster than the D4. Well.. we already know that Ken... thanks. The D800 is slow... yes.. we know this too... Oh.. and Nikon are sluggards when it comes to releasing new image processors. We know this too, and have done for 15 years.

Only Ken however, can weave all this into a fabricated story about all Nikon's being the same and stir up a hornet's nest on the interwebs... and just look at how many people have swallowed it!

He's pandering to the lowest common denominator who can't be arsed researching the facts, and don't know any better.

B&H probably have large Canon stocks they need to shift :)

Basically... he's a troll... stop feeding him.

I bet Ken thinks Oscar had it right when he said there's only one thing worse than being talked about. :D

i think a lot of the bashing is because it seems to be the in thing to do.

I do wonder why people spend so much time and effort slagging him off, when all they are doing in reality is promoting his name on the internet, and they continue to do so ... guy is a genius, yet they cannot see it :D

Interesting, thank you :)

So he's right then?

jeez, so much anger over a guys website.

Some of what he says I agree with, some of it I think is utter crap.

Some of what Pookeyhead,Cagey and others on here say, I think is crap, some I agree with and I bet they think the same about other people on here.

Why get so irate about him?

One thing for sure, I bet he makes a good living out of his controversial utterances.

he write lens rewievs

the world and his dog write lens reviews

in order to get noticed and stand out from the world and said dog he also writes inflamatory "essays"

it seems to work for him

happy new year x

My 2p is if you blindly read that and assume he is right then you are more than likely a beginner and don't actually need anything more than a D600 (though in that case I'd actually say a D600 is extreme overkill).

If you realise what the differences are and need them then you will ignore him and go with what you need. The end result I guess is if you can't make your own mind up and go off what he says then you're being pushed in the right direction.
