The next storage solution after Blue-Ray?

That is if even Blu Ray becomes any market force...things are moving that quick since the HD war! How many years did (and still does!) DVD have dominance for? Yet we already have another couple of technologies to come and knock Blu Ray out of the equation!

That'll be the super ultimate you'll never need to buy another until something better comes out James Bond Boxset then.

Only the spanners are buying bluray, the rest of us can see it for the con it is, slightly better resolution for 2x the price of a DVD

um right, and DVD didnt start at that sort of price and arent dropping now theyve been superceeded>?

slightly better picture?

last time i read about it DVD is approx 720x576 PAL, Blu-ray is 1920×1080. next youll be telling me you run your computer in 640x480.

and its about the sound also, higher bitrate audio for blu-ray.

But that's the point - all this new technology in the pipeline and Blu Ray isn't even the dominant force in the market yet - by a long, long way! Only the technophiles are investing in it...and perhaps PS3 owners who got Blu Ray as a bit of a freebie! The vast majority of people I know are still buying DVDs, even some of those with PS3s!

im not denying a lot of people havent made the switch yet, im just clearing up the technical incorrectness. but then if i remember rightly DVD didnt exactly take off overnight, but that was 10 or so years ago now so forgive my hazy memory lol

if you want the extra picture and sound quality then youll make the switch, if not then you wont. at the end of the day people arent really in a financial situation to make the necessary purchases to get the most out of blu-ray at the moment.. its an expensive format to get set up for.

Indeed, and it's taken 10 or so years for the next gen to come along since DVD....but there have been a couple of technologies publicized recently that are only 3-4 years from being released to the public!

I'm just going to stick to the cinema from now on...when I've seen it, I've seen it

tbqfh if you're pixel peeping then yeah it's a better quality image but frankly dvd has enough clarity for most people the jump into high def isn't half as impressive as they make out to the majority of people.

also some films are visually more impressive than others so shine when in high def and others just look ok

as for the media, if it's cheap enough and practical enough then it sounds good :D

yes youre right, a lot of people either arent interested or cant justify buying new kit to get the upgrade concidering the cost of AV amps capable of decoding the required bitrates.

and yes some films have shocking blu-ray conversions. max payne in HD is very cool though (my opinion of course).

(kinda wandered off topic a little havent we.... sorry!)

It'll never happen, all the movie studios have invested millions and billions into BluRay already, and it's only just taking off. After half of the Studio failed on the HD-DVD bet, they are not going to pull out of BluRay so soon.

purpleclouds, I'm still backing up to the tape deck of an Spectrum ZX!!!! :)

I'm just backing up to two Lacie D2 drives - not very portable but reliable

Blu-ray will be around for a few years yet, this 1tb of storage on a disc is fine but from what I read it's very complex and it writes to disc at the same speed as with current dvds, which means it would take hours if not days to fill a single disc. Before that happens you have to get the technology to work commercially and at a price that makes it worthwhile.

I doubt bluray will take off with the general public until the recorders come down to £200 and sky drops the £10 a month HD subscription.

there's probably all kinds of copyright issues to be sorted out though, I can't imagine the studios will be happy with sky customers being able to record HD films for £1 or so each.

I wouldn't be surprised if this technology is used by Blu-Ray manufacturers. Theres already talks that a 250gb capacity Blu-Ray disc will be available by the end of this year.
