I pretty much use my speedlights for everything when im outside, I like how portable they are, however, Im thinking about getting something with a bit more power.

Does anyone have any suggestions, they need to be portable though, so something that comes with a battery pack etc.

more speedlights :p

Thanks, I just want to be able to overpower the sun if needed. More speedlights isnt really an option.

I was kidding re speedlights

I meant throw out a price range, through makes no sense whatsoever :S

sorry about that

I'm in the same boat, don't want to expend a fortune, just bought a Speedlite two head Bowens adapter (is not perfect but twice the power of a single speedlite) was thinking in the explorer TFC had them for 300 or so in Focus2010 a shame I miss them :(

would love to live in the US an use one of these:

people report are very effective for flash heads and extremely cheap

pretty sure that photomart do something that looks pretty much identical to that, but with UK sockets, marketed for powering printers and laptops though :/ tronix packs really seem the way to go - OP, the basic tronix pack is £230ish posted inc customs iirc, add £250ish for a 600ws head and you can overpower the sun? or buy lots and lots and lots of extension leads.....

What's one of those? I was shooting at an event last year - people on a stage - using a CANON Speedlight EX550 which did an "ok" job but had to go to use the ambient light at quite high ISO as well as flash at its maximum output to get a decent exposure. A more powerful flash would have been useful.

+1

In the £400 price range, I think you'd be lucky to get something that will be of serious use overpowering the sun (especially if you need to go into high speed FP Sync territory (or whatever Canon calls it) to get good exposure on ambient.

Once you go past your camera's 1/250th (or whatever) max sync speed (which you may have to do to bring down the ambient light levels in your exposure if you want to keep control over your depth of field), you're losing flash output in a big way.

For £400, I'm not entirely sure you'd find a decent setup that would even support high speed flash sync speeds (there are some out there, but the ones I looked at that were Nikon FP sync compatible were a fair bit more expensive).

I was going to get some Alien Bees myself, but they don't ship to the UK any more, they don't produce 240v units any more, and once it's over here you're going to have a hard time with any warranty issues (and you'll have to pay duty & vat when you bring them back over). Ultimately if something went wrong with them, it'd probably end up being cheaper to buy a whole new flash unit.

For now, personally, I'm continuing to build my army of SB-900s, then I'll start looking at studio flashes.
