I would bet money the reason they haven't done an interchangeable version is twofold.
1) Manufacturing and development expense
2) They claim the sensor is optimised for the lens (Refer to the PDF), in that the periphery photosites are angled to accommodate the fixed lens angle of view. Were it to be interchangeable, this would not be possible and would compromise the image quality.

Now, I know some people will say "Well the PEN has interchangeable lenses!", yes it does, but it remains to be seen how good the IQ from this Fuji will be. If it's the same as a PEN or similar, then yes Fuji have failed miserably.
If it's truly stellar? Then we'll have a relatively compact, sexy-as-hell manually controllable camera, the likes of which manufacturers have ignored since the birth of the digital compact.
 
I have a feeling this'll be the digital equivalent of the Hexar AF. Classic form factor with a sharp, fixed lens. Perfect for general photography.

Well, I think it is a bit weird to criticise something for being 'styled' whatever you do. As it goes I think it looks great and fills a position in the market that has largely disappeared but Fuji are being barmy about price. Unless they are casting the chassis out of titanium I doubt it costs more to make it look 'retro' than it does to make it look 'futuristic'. It is all about marketing.

Much as I'd like it, fixed lens compacts are not 'worth' that much to me. We'll see how it sells to others when it actually gets in the shops though.

Obviously those shocked at the potential £1k launch price of this (seems I was way off with my guess) haven't seen how much the Fuji/Cosina MF folding rangefinder goes for and that thing doesn't have a quarter of the bells and whistles this thing does. Compared to that camera either this thing is a steal or the other one is ridiculously overpriced (although I suspect the economies of scale play a much larger part with the MF camera).
 
You don't need one of them you need the speed grip for your SQA. Get it done.

I had a Sigma DP1 until I sold everything to go FF but missed it's IQ and convenience so much I ordered a replacement yesterday.

If Fuji get the lens right with the handling and autofocus up to scratch, I'll be forming an orderly queue down at the Fuji shop.

Btw, Fuji's first concern is their home market and this will sell in vast quantities there. Plenty of our American cousins will be buying too.

I'm late to this thread but have been drooling at the X100 since it was announced at Photkina.

The anti-fixed lens brigade need to go to a dictionary and look up the word 'compromise'. The compromise this camera makes is the lack of interchangeability. To have interchangeable lenses on a CMOS sensor would require a bigger camera, a hell of a lot more R&D and a totally different sensor all of which would do away with the unique aspects of this camera.

  • Optical veiwfinder
  • CMOS sensor (I'm hoping that as per the Fuji DSLRs of old it has a wider dynamic range too)
  • Sensor and lens designed in parallel for optimun performace
  • Phase detection AF (much faster than contrast detection as found in comacts, bridge & EVIL cameras)
  • Compact size (considering the size of sensor)
  • HD video

If you want interchangeable lenses, get a DSLR system. If you want a walkabout camera for high quality images with optical viewfinder and fast AF that will fit into a jacket pocket, then this is your only answer. This camera is the perfect street photography camera.

I only use the 20/1.7 with my GF1. Yes it's occasionally restrictive, but the times I find it restrictive are the times when I wouldn't have had a camera with me at all.

I want an X100, and unless something significantly negative is raised with it at launch I'll be getting one.
