Plenoptic cameras are quite nice, and relatively simple to make. Played with a Lytro prototype a while ago - once you get used to it, it is very nice.

These have been out a while. I've seen some reviews onthem, but the quality of the images were poor. It's just a gimmick I think.

It definitely isn't a gimmick, plenoptic cameras work. Lytro is only 640x480, however if you see the images from Adobe's lightfield camera or the CAFADIS camera they're much better implementations.

Nokia are expecting their cameraphones to be plenoptic from about 2015.

New? This has been out ages. Only just going on sale in the UK though. I think it's very interesting technology.
