The New Lomography MC-A. The new AF point and shoot.

From what I've seen, my main gripe would be a maximum shutter speed of 1/500
I’m guessing it’s using an industrial style IR camera electromagnetic shutter, and I’ve only ever seen those go up to 1/500th max. The camera does have a filter thread (I think) so adding an ND filter will help.

Really please to see this. I am even tempted.

Astonishing. Full metal body. 5 elements glass lens. DX iso override.

Bar any major QC issues I see this selling well.

Might be the point and shoot I've been looking for after a couple of really disappointing experiences on the used market.

500£ sounds like really good pricing too, given that equivalently spec'ed used high end P&S cameras (e.g. Fuji Klasse W or S) go for three times that amount.

Looks quite interesting. I wonder if they've learned from the disaster that was the Mint Rollei about what not to do?!

Reviews on YouTube look promising but I don’t always trust them when they’ve had a freebie. It looks like it’ll be a good pocketable companion to my P17. Arrival is showing as December/January. Everyone kept pushing the 35af instead of the p17, reviews look poor and it’s almost twice the cost. As you say a disaster, lots of niggles and problems from buyers.

There’s the usual moaners, complaining about the Lomo that you can get an old slr with a couple of good lenses for less. I’ve bought 12 old cameras over the past few months, most are returned (even though they were apparently tested). The only good ones I’ve bought are a canon ae1(that croaks and squeaks!) and a praktica mtl5b(cheapest but works). Every time I buy one it costs me money for film, developing & scanning and postage to find out it’s broken! I pretty much just use the p17 now.

This and the p17 will have warranty and spare parts available. Every new film camera that gets released gets slated from die hards. Film will die if this carries on. The p17 got slagged off, mostly by people that have never even touched one.

I hope this takes off now Pentax’s film project is dead. More new film cameras will hopefully mean cheaper film and processing(dreaming).

Completely agree with your bits in boldface above.

As someone who's done with buying used cameras (just had a terrible experience with a MINT++++ Minolta Autocord off ebay japan and and even worse experience with the clown I've sent it to for a CLA) I will from now on only buy new cameras with a warranty.

Looking forward to your impressions on the LOMO.

I love the old (working) cameras I’ve bought, even if they have got 4 generations worth of dna skin and snot welded to them. I just don’t trust them at all though, even from reputable sellers. Like you, I’ll be buying new if I can.

We’ll have to wait and see what Santa brings
Looking forward to your impressions on the LOMO.

Having had the P17 and tried the Rollei the P17 is vastly better. It's actually properly usable.

I've been fairly lucky with the used cameras I've got. Bought several and only the canon so far has failed. I've stuck with cheaper end recently. I did used to risk more money on more expensive ones but decided that was definitely a good way of ending up with a paper weight you'd have to spend a lot to fix or lose all the money you spent. The cheapo minolta AF SLRs are 10 a penny and usually £20 - £30 so if one does a few rolls and dies it's not a catastrophe. I still like the idea of buying new film cameras now and having many more years of using film. Without new ones coming along there's just not going to be sufficient used ones left that still work. The ones with weird batteries are definitely likely to die off compared to ones with modern batteries. Olympus trips will probably still be working in the 2100s.

I know I can give the p17 and possibly this Lomo to my wife to use in auto without a problem. That includes opening, loading film taking shots and rewinding.
There’s a lot to be said for that, she wouldn’t even attempt it on the older bodies. She’s strictly point & shoot lol!

It's actually properly usable.

Waiting shipment

Have you checked your tracking yet?

I did first thing and it was still on hold. Checked it just now and it has waiting shipment. It's so much better when they have a clear status listed!

Just had a shipment notification for the film order. It's been sent out via Parcel Farce. Ooh.

Good news about the film. Parcel force aren’t too bad here, they just don’t turn up until very late afternoon. Always too late to get the new camera batteries charged for a test!

Hope our cameras arrive before Christmas. Would’ve liked it for tomorrow, the mini stream trains are doing the Santa run :ROFLMAO: (Sad I know)
Went last week but it was pitch dark. Too many kids everywhere as it came light.
Then I got sort of attacked by a dog not on a lead! Filthied my clothes and ripped my coat!!

To top it all, I didn’t even see Santa:(

Good luck you guys with your new cameras. We are very pleased with the Pentax 17 we have - bought by me for me but acquired by my wife who loves it and shooting film.
As a Pentax devotee of decades, I'm keen to see where they go next. I might be tempted to get the Lomo though once I've seen your real-world feedback.

I thought Pentax would’ve gone full frame. The 17 body would’ve done , it’s big enough inside.
Hoping this is at least as good (or better) than the 17. A few people are having niggles but Lomo appear to be dealing with their customers.

A few YouTube reviews have appeared from actual buyers, it looks promising.

Mines just arrived, they tried to deliver last night apparently.

Wow!

You’ll be impressed. Packaging is amazing, extras are fantastic. Build quality is spot on.

Just charging the battery and choosing a film

I've only just read the Lomo page on this camera. It looks impressively featured. It also says it's available to purchase. Only gone as far as putting one in the basket. Will have a think about actually purchasing one later...

I don’t want to knock my Pentax 17 but this appears to be more substantial, it feels like a premium camera. Time will tell of course, but never had any problem with the 17s.

I was a little nervous after looking at pre production reviews but this is perfect. Just loaded a roll of hp5, at least I can see how it compares to my others that way. It just takes me ages to get through a roll of film but desperate to see how it turns out.

Yes! Both arrived within a few minutes of each other.
Is it all good? All functioning okay?

Checked everything on mine and it’s all working as it should. Just need to get a roll through it and check frame spacing. Loaded film like an slr with a couple of advances on the spool, not like a p&s. Hoping that’s why people have been having issues.

I assume so. I'm just charging up the battery. Didn't open it immediately as it was quite cold on arrival. Feels very nicely made though. Box presentation is also top dollar.

Only left mine to settle for half an hour while I had a brew and charged the battery. You can use your thumbnail to open and close the battery cover if you don’t want to scratch the coating.

Let me know how you go on with yours (y)

I must...not...yield...I am...strong...

@bumper please let us know how the negatives look. The YouTubers/Redditors who put their hands on one seem to think it's great. Only one guy said the frame spacing is a little uneven in their unit.

I thought I was strong too……failed!

I hope the frame spacing is good because everything else is spot on. Just don’t want overlapping on it really. It just feels too good to be true, a new film camera that’s well built.
If there’s any issues, it’ll be on mine. If it wasn’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all. I really made sure the film was loaded well, so we’ll see.

I’ve just boxed a *mint* spotmatic up for return, curtain is sticking and blocking half the photos on faster shutter speeds. Not willing to pay extra to get it fixed either when I overpaid for its condition. It’s already cost a roll of film and dev/scanning/postage.

If this Lomo is good, I’m giving up on old cameras completely. I may get a silver version to use too, it’s always nice to have a different film option.

Quick update

Took this to work today and took a handful of shots. A couple of niggles that I’ve got to get used to are;
Uv filter kept unscrewing as I adjusted aperture. I may have to give it a good twist to secure but don’t want to damage anything.
The advance lever needs to be fully wound or you have to give it an extra wind before you can take a shot. This could be the frame spacing issue?
LiDAR focusing hates glass, manual focusing cures it.

Overall, it’s a pleasure to use. I hope it’s as good as wished for, so far it is but I’ve not gone through a roll yet.
I think this could be all the camera most people need!

The wind issue sounds the same as the rollei. That had to be pushed right far as it would go or you'd have to do another little wind.

Having manual range focus is good and also having the focus distance on the top so you have an idea of what distance it's interested in is also really useful.

I think that little extra wind is definitely user error on my part. Once I realised what I was doing it was fully advancing in one go, but you really need to take the time to use all of the travel on the lever.

I do like the digital range display but wouldn’t it be great in the viewfinder. Maybe on their next model.

Have you been out with yours yet?

Thank you both for the update.

May I ask - how snappy does it feel in operation. Is there noticeable e.g. shutter button lag and or focus lag/focus hunting (in normal light conditions)?

It’s pretty quick. Faster than the Pentax 17, not had any hunting. Even through glass the lidar focuses almost instantly but you can’t be sure whether it’s on the glass itself or through it. That’s where the focus distance on the screen helps and the mf zone focus. Light was poor yesterday too, very overcast and gloomy but it even appears to get focus instantly in the dark too. Note, this is how I think it’s working, still on the first roll so can’t 100% check focus. However, from various reviews the focus and metering looks to be spot on.

Finally got some sunshine and it seemed the whole of the North West had also descended on the same National Trust place I'd decided to wander around.

Hmm. It got to frame 27 then wouldn't wind on. Took another, pushed the winder and nada. So it's stuck before the end or the frame counter/spacing is wrong. Had lots of instances where it'd not register the wind fully even though I wanged it. Had one on frame 20 where it was 3 wangs to make it go up one. Others were just the single wang. Many were double wang. Will have to wait to get the roll back to see whether it was fine until about frame 27 and empty the rest of the way or it started going adrift earlier than that with big gaps.

It's annoying if it isn't right as it's good to use. The frame counter is big enough to see without reading glasses which is a big help. Can also see which flash setting it's on as well without glasses. Left it in fully auto everything and it seemed to be fine the entire time.

Hope the wind on or spacing issue is resolvable or fixable by Lomo. It sounds good apart from that.

I’m only up to about 12 or 13, everything fine so far. Don’t want to tempt fate but mines winding well now I’ve remembered to go full wind(no mini winds). Currently got 8 rolls on the go in various cameras so I may have to force myself to use the full roll to test it.

How have you loaded the film? I’ve noticed people putting it to the left of the spool and the winding. I only do this method on spools that rotate clockwise from above. The mca spool follows the lever so I loaded the film as my older lca and just fed the leader through the spool to the right side, then advanced a couple of frame to make sure it was taking up the film. I watched someone load theirs to the left and it was winding crunchy too. Sure I’ve seen someone comment on this jamming only happening with certain films too, maybe gold?

I too like the large display, I’m starting to struggle on other cameras.

Are you going to try another roll through it?
