As a newbie what I'm finding with PP is that the more techniques I learn the more I don't know what I want the outcome to be or 'the look'.

Do you have a standard 'look' that you try to stick to?

Can you show me some examples of your favourite look?

I think it depends on what your trying to achive, for weddings I try to go with a fairly natural-ish look, my landscapes I tend to go for a subtle HDR look, and my... Hmmm "creative" look could be anything from a simple sepia to added texture layers or whatever takes my fancy.
I find that sometimes while actually taking the shot I'll get an idea that so and so will work nicely on this, other times it may come during the post process and I'll just play till I get what I want.
As you get more experienced I suspect you'll get a better idea of what you like, then it's just practice and refining your style to suit.

It really depends. For alot of work your are only correcting photos, getting the exposure, contrast and colour right and so on. But as far as being creative thre is no limit really, its dont to your own creative freedom. I found as i learned new techniques i tended to over use it untill i found another technique i wanted to try and the cycle continued. But after a while you will start to develop an instinctive judgment as to whether a photo needs extra PP or not, and what it needs for it to work.

I'd say just keep at it and you will develop your own styles and techniques all in good time. I'd also add that, in most instances you'll want to have a set of pictures to have the same PP style. But you can switch from different styles from set to set, shoot to shoot etc. Its good for each shoot to have its own distinct style, you just gotta be careful about doing it for doing its sake.

I'd recommend taking a look at coffeshopblog and scouring youtube for cross-processing techniques, David Hill photoshop tutorials, dragan also. Just search the words 'photoshop' with other words like, glamour, fashion, portrait, retro etc

What kind of stuff do you shoot?

@Wayne I think that's a good point as a nonpro the stuff I shoot is varied and it many different situations so one look wouldn't work.

At the moment I'm just trying different techniques hopefully one will catch ;)

@Adrian Mostly I'm talking about the 'creative' look but I guess it will come and also as I start to focus on what I want to shoot then maybe a 'look' will evolve.

Will check out the different sites, I'm aware of most of what's out there I guess I just need a focus more on what I'm shooting, at the moment it's pretty much anything.

Thanks both for the thoughts!

Hi Roger.
Some good advice above which I can't really add much to, but I think it's difficult to go for a 'look' if you are photographing different subjects all the time. You also have to careful because a 'look' can make all your pics look a bit samey.
It might be worth doing a search for "plug-ins" for your PP editor, as that lets you play with different effects.

QS
might be "plugins"
