The Man Who Saw America

The Americans is probably one of the best photo books of all time, and what really put Frank on the map.

Thanks for posting, David, one of my favourite books. I seem to see something new every time I look at the photographs.

The cover photograph is a photograph I find myself staring at for long periods.

The contempt on the front women's face and the pain in the guy on the rights face.

I between them, two innocents.

Cheers.

There's a subtle undercurrent of famous photographers and their work getting posted, which I like.

The Americans was the result of his road trip, documenting the American way of life. 27000 images taken, edited down to 83 images for the book.
Sponsored, his submission for sponsorship is and interesting read: http://enthusiasms.org/post/349149245 as is jack kerouac's introduction.

The photos are really interesting when you have the symbology pointed out, such as flags, the vehicles, death.

"I've seen America, and I don't like what I see!"

Robert Frank.

I thought I'd dig my copy of The Americans out today. All those nerds who have to have level horizons and perfectly sharp, grain free, pictures ought to take a good look through it. :)

It's been reprinted now. I picked up a hardback copy at the Tate for £8 in their sale.
