The latest Nikon patents: 400mm, 500mm and 600mm f/5.6 Phase Fresnel (PF) lenses

I wonder when? :)

Yes, i have a feeling the announcement is to instill a bit of confidence in the mirrorless range when it arrives.

I wonder when? :)
The first Nikon patent for a lens featuring a diffractive element was filed on 9th January 2012 [1]. It was published on 19th July 2012 and reported by Nikon Rumors on 4th August 2012 [2]. The 300mm f/4 PF lens was announced on 6th January 2015 [3]. So that's almost exactly 3 years from filing the patent to announcing the lens.

This patent for the 400mm, 500mm and 600mm PF lenses was apparently filed on 27th July 2016 [4]. So based on that 3-year lead time, we might be looking at mid-2019 for the lenses to be announced. If they are ever put into production, which of course is not guaranteed to happen.

I have a 300PF so with 1.4tc I get 420 5.6. So the 400 will not be of interest. Many are/were hoping for a 400mm F4 PF.
If the 600mm is not huge I expect it will sell well.
But, as Mike says, it will cost.

I don't see why it shouldn't be a lot cheaper that the existing 600 f4 FL but then what do I know!

The 300mm f4 pf cost considerably more than the lens it replaced, not suggesting a pf version would replace the current 600mm/f4 if it were more expensive by a similar amount to the 300mm version that would put into the price category
of the current 800mmf5.6 fl lens which runs about £14,500 with the wind behind it!
cheers

PS Hows life at Slimbridge, guess bird numbers will be epic at the moment!

Yes I'm sure that the $$$$/££££ will be max'd out of it. :)
Slimbridge is doing fine and yes numerous birds, especially waders now the Tack Piece has been flooded ... and a new visitor in recent days, a Glossy Ibis :)
