one thing not having major funds for various gassages (photo, music, gaming) has taught me is the value of older gear and it still being capable in the modern world.. okay maybe high ISO low light stuff but apart from that more than happy with..

I think it shows in my case I am a GAS for GAS sake person.

its a good realization to have.
 
Any digital dslr and mirror less system from the past ten years is more than enough image quality wise for general day to day use. But the manufacturers know this and this is why they keep adding all the bells and whistles bit by bit so that we think old tech is no good.
Nowadays if it doesn't focus faster than a flash of lightning and the Ido doesn't go upto 51200 and it doesn't have more than 39 focus points, tilting touchscreen and wifi then it's no good!
And we all fall for it year after year!
We are such fickle creatures. :)

[PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] me a gf1 goes for like £45 and an xpro1 just over £200 - the market is so saturated by amazing cameras nobody wants and have little to no value it's insane!!
Of course there is always a few exceptions to the rule and these mostly tend to be canon bodies- go figure?

Gear is hardly an investment unless it earns you money I think New gear just helps you have more chance of getting the shot Wild life in particular benefits from this.

Yes, and a very good realisation to have - saves a lot of money and disappointment. Most equipment purchases round these parts are GAS, or at least mainly GAS. I've spent many thousands over the years, and nobody but me can tell the difference in my photos (and I'm probably imagining it). But I enjoy using new kit, and don't care that it usually makes bugga-all difference. I enjoy learning and using new techniques as well, regardless of the result - a good shot is a bit of a bonus ;)

The upside is that there's a lot of excellent equipment on the second-hand market, hardly used and going cheap.

Interesting comment - and I agree. This sounds like inverted GAS, and just goes to show that the masterpiece we are all striving to capture is only part of the game. Surely the ultimate camera would be totally boring - see something, snap, and there it is, just as we imagined it and with zero input from behind the camera. 100% perfect, but completely uninvolving and totally dull :D

I don't seem to have quite the amount of GAS some around these parts of the forum seem to have and when I do it's often satisfied by a relatively cheap old SLR lens. When I get something new one thing I do is wait for a really nice shot and then I think... "It's just paid for itself."

I agree about GF1's and the like... I had one and I still have a G1 which is pretty much the same but with an EVF. I swapped the GF1 for a G1 for the EVF. With only just a little care these cameras give useable images up to and including ISO 3200 and probably / almost certainly better anything I ever got from film. The only things to watch are the potential to blow the highlights in strong light and shadow and noise at the highest ISO settings. Other than that these cameras can give very good results and cost peanuts.
 
The latest gear will be out of date in a few months anyway when something bigger and better newer and more expensive comes along.
I've managed to control my GAS recently and have only bought stuff that does something significantly more than what I had before. In fact, the only thing I can remember buying recently is the Fuji 100-400 and 1.4x telecon which gives me much more reach than anything I had before, especially since it's on a 1.5x crop body rather than my previous long end of 300mm on an FF system.
 
You can put together amazing kits of old bits. Camera bodies (and bespoke accessories) in particular absolutely crater in price. Lenses not so much, it's always worth having a good idea of the approximate prices of lenses for your system so you can spot a bargain.
