The "how would you edit this photo" game.

hes lonely! ;)

These edits make mine look awful. Amazing how people's minds come up with weird and wonderful ideas :)

lol always worth a go tho isnt it!

Its a super thread, I just play with effects on GIMP i never remember what they do but just go by trial and error! I used Adobe PS at school what a super piece of software but I cant just splash £1000 to win once on this thread lol!

just get the baby photoshop (elements) for £70 or so for the latest version (9).. it does everything i ever need

I was in 2 or 3 minds about this, but decided to let the missus have the casting vote....

so this is the winner, as it was most striking and had a "strong focal point"

Oh My!

Didnt expect that... (again).

Goddammit im going to have to find another weird pic of mine for you to use :D

Thanks for all the comments guys....... i should really have given some explanation to how i created that.

The car and screen layer were simply cut from another photo using the lassoo tool - the key there is to use anything from a 3-10px feather border and then remove with the eraser any parts you dont need!
I used the Photoshop Filters and Render >> Lighting Effects. There is a spotlight mode in there and with lots of fiddling you can create the spotlight effect or vignette effect to give the illuminated center.
I made the photo "Grayscale" and then adjusted the levels to get the correct feel for the darkness and contrasts.
Levels is the key for making a cut and pasted image look the same brightness/light&dark spots as whatever it is you are pasting on to.

Hope that helps!

yawn not him again
why i oughta!! :bat: I am very grateful though!

hang on a minute... so you're telling us the car and screen were 'simply cut from another photo' ??? For god's sake... i thought we had to edit the picture with images / work of our own, not by raiding google images! :gag:

only kidding... great job (again :dummy:)... although i have to agree b&w combined with levels does help to conceal a multitude of buggered up colours and toning variations

dont get me wrong curly, the other photo was a collage of every 1940s car i could find in the UK stitched together by hand in Photoshop and then edited in seamlessly!

Pffft "Google Images" he says!

It's kills me to say this, ;) but well deserved Mr Cool, a great edit and worthy winner by far  obviously the paypal bride didn't help too much in the judges final decision

Some great edits that round, well done all
Anyway, enough of my sulking, and on with the next round

:lol::lol::lol:

I have said this before and will say it again, I do feel we should change the rules on this to use ONLY our own photos/manipulations/imagination.

Copyright - using others pictures without licences or their permission is not on, we don't like it when others use ours (going by the many threads about it in this forum) so why should we feel free to use others pictures when we should know better about copyright violations ?

It seems to be much easier and the results more impressive to lift a picture or two off the web and edit the original than to find or take one of our own?

Those who use only their own work appear from the results to be at a disadvantage when it comes to choosing - and shouldn't the person who took the photo be deciding who the winner is, as they can judge the manipulations better than someone who is looking at the result rather than the work involved?

Rant over :D

Just for a bit of quick fun :)

Well there's a quick way to put out the fire!

You make a good point, however I think that would very much limit the creativity of the entries. If you look back at many of the entries of the last few pages, they just wouldn't be possible if people had to use their own photos...that's just my opinion :)

Exactly my point - are the entries so good because other's work is hijacked to use in them or because of the skill of the person editing? If we only use our own photos then the results are solely down to our own skills, not someone elses :) I have a feeling I might not win this point :D

While I argree with what you say, the problem is many of just don't have the time to takes photographs just for this thread.
I have 3 weddings to edit by friday, a bride to see tonight an event tomorrow night and a dress rehearsal to shoot friday, not to mention buying ink for the printer and getting a new exhaust fitted to my car, I simply haven't got time to go and set up two models running (my last edit here) and shoot it just for fun. I did make the ufo because that was quick.
Some of the edits here would take days or weeks to set up and shoot, we only have a few days at best, and it's just for FUN, we are not selling the work on.

I think maybe we shouldnt get too hung up about this image theft thingy ..in all cases we use the op pic as the base, its just bits of diff images that are used to enhance the image, we are only having a bit fun..we are not posting them anywhere else and we certainly arent making any money out of it..anyway if things were iffy the mods would have been down on us like a ton of bricks..

Here is a quickie I done before heading to work (copyright Mr G) :D:D

i think the main point here is that it is just for fun.

these edits are not going to be banded around outside this thread even, let alone elsewhere on the web. Like wayne said, there's just isn't the time (or inclination) to go and set anything up and besides that, my portfolio of images would be pretty slim if i take out the 25,000 shots of my family :gag:

And cost billions and billions of of pounds and great advances in current scientific knowledge in my case, considering my edit included the surface of Mars

Just as well you didn't use Pluto then... it would cost even more ;)

In my opinion - though i do love this "game" - i think it should be how you would EDIT the photo (using only tools and filters in photo editing programs), rather than just adding things in to it and playing about... but there you go it makes for a much more fun game this way.

I do believe in needing the theories behind the edits though because if you want to copy the way something is edited i think its more appropriate.

I also think that we should be posting more photos of people/animals etc. All these scenery shots arent what i photograph in real life so ultimately the results are meaningless to me realistically.

In a way I agree with you there, because it's just going to turn into who can use photoshop the best. I mean if I want I could use 3d animation programmes and compositing programmes and create an entirely new world from scratch with just an element from the original photo in it, but then as I say it's just become a case of who can use the most image editing tools...

Okay, looks like I am in a minority here :) Am I the only one who has been using just their own images for the edits ? If not perhaps we should mention it when we post ?

I think are. I do agree with some of what your saying, but I don't think it's relevant for this thread, it's just about a bit of fun. The pics aren't going to get published, they don't even leave this thread. The posted pic you will find is nearly always still the main photo and the googled pics have only bits and pieces pinched from them.
The main point of this thread is 'fun'. A quick edit that only takes half hour to an hour.

Totally agree Leigh, total pants (heavily soiled)

i went for a more challenging approach.. i did all the editing using just my toes and a keyboard :bonk:

I would have said 'impressive' if you had your right leg round your neck and blind folded as well
