the hobby is starting to get expensive

That's interesting Lee. What happens as new cameras and lenses come out, do you get updates to handle new kit or is the version you buy frozen in time? I suppose raws may not be an issue if you convert to DNG but lens profiles could be a problem.

I'm not sure Alan. I use LR for the majority of my editing and just use Affinity for my Photoshop type work - blending, masking, healing brush etc. I've not actually used it for importing RAW files into.

I asked John above so maybe we'll know more if/when he replies.

I decided to give Photoshop subscription a go but so far apart from the handling of Panasonic G100 files and the application of lens profiles to that cameras raws I can't see any other benefit compared to CS5. The new version of Photoshop does seem to have one downside, I can't use Nik filters with it so have to switch to CS5 for that.

Actually scrap that. I can use Nik filters with the new Photoshop subscription by selecting an older version under "calibration."

I think a lot of the improvements are with things like sky replacement, masking accuracy, healing brush, content aware, and things like that.

So just to be clear, if you buy it you get camera raw and lens profile updates?

If that's the case I'll trial it but looking at their website I can't see anywhere where it mentions this.
I believe affinity used to use the LensFun dB but dont expect it to be as comprehensive as LR or DXO.

I also mainly use it as a PS alternative - RAW processing usually in PL4 or 5 or elsewhere.

Has photography ever been cheap?

I have no idea about lens profiles as I never use them.

The latest version must be able to read the image files from recent cameras or no one would buy it. I haven't bought a new camera for two years so I have no way of knowing if it works with newer cameras than that. But I repeat, Affinity have updated my version to the most recent version and have done so 5 or 6 times so far.

I'm not really worried about it not reading files from new cameras as I always convert to DNG but I really do want lens profiles. Well, it costs nothing to download it and give it a go so I might just do that.

I know what you mean everything is expensive now, I gave up with monthly subs like adobe when I retired, I now use DXO photolab and Affinity they are a one off purchase
Luckily gear wise I’m set the R5 I bought last year should last me a very long time
What is an problem for us is just the cost of everything means I’ve got less money spare for photo trips and the cost of petrol means that I’m making fewer long trips for the butterflies, just did Dorset this year and am working out if we can spend a week in Norfolk next year

You make hobbies as expensive as you want them too. Simple as. Listen to music and chase the "hifi" bug and that gets VERY expensive. Best thing is to be deaf so you can listen to music on any device and still enjoy it, have bad eyesight and not care about image quality and post everything everywhere from a smartphone and don't care how you travel and buy the crappiest car going. So my Naim gear, Nikon gear and Audi RS3 are just stupied overspends surely :headbang:
