if you read it and understand it things become clear and it improves your photography no end.
its hard to find now and you may doubt what i say,but once you read it you will thank me.

its pre digital but that does not matter its far more than the mechanincs of photography its more about the visual and why some things work.

have you a book of equal brilliance you would reccomend?

Pictures on a page is a fabulous book. Picked up my copy for £3 about 10 years ago, and it remains one of my favourites.

David DuChemin's Within The Frame is also superb, and I've very much enjoying Michael Freemans recent books - The Photographers Mind, The Photographers Vision and The Photographers Story. And also Galen Rowell's Inner Game Of Outdoor Photography.

There's also photographic monographs, but that's for a different thread..........

I'm not familiar with your recommended book (yet), so can't say this is "equal brilliance"...

Over the past 30 years I've dragged this monster home from the library again and again, until when I recently got the splendid idea to check it in google

Peter Pollack: The Picture History of Photography!

Got my second edition (+700 pages) for the ridiculous price of some $30 including postage! :cuckoo:

Basic photography by Michael Langford, a brilliant book, although the copy I have is pre digital, but the basics are still the same.

That looks like my kind of book, thanks.

A couple of very interesting books to look at, thank you :).

My contribution to this thread is a book called, "First Light, a landscape photographers art" by Joe Cornish.
It's an excellent read and some of the images are sublime. I would go so far as suggesting that it's a must read for anyone remotely interested in landscape photography.
