I was thinking we should have a tip thread to assist members with solutions that stump us normally.....

Here's mine:

Burnt saucepan.

Put some coke into the bottom and simmer gently and before you now it.......shiny pan:D

Feel free to add sensible tips ......

Coke will destroy anything. Another top tip is vinegar.......... gets rid of pretty much anything, and should you spill red wine on a light carpet, salt or white wine (waste of wine!) - salt is cheap.

I use vinegar to clean the house....it's brilliant.....there is even a tip to use watered down vinegar as an aftershave.....maybe that's why I have no luck with the ladies:D

Easier method - bin it and buy another.

To get lily pollen stains out of clothes, leave the affected area in full sunlight until it fades.

Keep a box of matches in the same container as a couple of nightlights and somewhere you can find with your eyes shut so if there's a sudden power cut (is there any other kind?) you can get a little light easily.

If you can nearly lick it, it's your elbow but if you need a mirror to see it, it's your ar5e! (Anyone claiming to be able to lick either must provide photographic proof!!!)

Never over trust a fart

This advice has many depths :)

Didn't work with a pan burned with rice :(

Try a very strong solution of salt and boil that then see what happens to the rice - it should lift

Always keep a cool head in yer kecks!

Believe me...I've tried all manner of things :(

Pans stoll ok...just blackened.

I had the same with egg, took a good 2 days with repeated boiling water and washing powder, each change the blackened slowly got smaller..eventually[emoji15]

This also works well for baby/ toddler clothes that have been stained with tomato/ carrot based foods

I love the smell of vinegar as a cleaning product nothing wrong with it.

i once used a mixture of coca-cola ,white vinegar, and half a teaspoon of salt ,to clean some old copper pennies i found metal detecting .left them soaking overnight as they were all crudded up

came down next morning and they were nice and shiny ,bright copper plain disks ,ALL detail had been removed 1st and last time .

My method was:
Put rice and water in pan
Turn on heat
Wander off
Wait long enough for water to boil away
Voila - burnt rice

I don't wander off anymore. Not since the flood.

That'd do it. Top tip for cooking rice - don't do that.

More serious top tip for cooking rice. Gives lovely light fluffy rice without needing to drain or wash afterwards

Use 1 1/2 cups of water to 1 cup of rice. Cover & bring water to boil. Then add rice and reduce to simmer (leave covered). Leave rice in pan at simmer for 15 minutes. Turn heat off and leave covered for further 15 minutes.

err thats it, you now have pan of fluffy rice ready to serve. Timings work for Bismati. Use 20 minutes and 20 minutes for brown and Thai rice. Portion sizes work for two people.

My top tip for cooking rice, microwave rice, I haven't burnt a pan yet:D
actually the microwave basmati rice is very good

Boiling rice is a PITA so I usually use the Uncle Ben's or Tilda microwave packs - 2 minutes, rice done. I need to eat wholemeal rice when possible and that really is a PITA from scratch.

Cleaning aluminium pans which are rather manky looking

In rhubarb season if you have a family that LOVE rhubarb - stew Rhubarb in your manky aluminium pan - result nice clean pan and lots of lovely rhubarb to eat in a Crumble :)

China teapot with heavy tea staining [ works for cups too ] rub over the stains with damp salt [ if you have any cuts on your hands/fingers for pity's sake use latex/rubber gloves ]

The internet is full of cleaning uses for vinegar and coke that don't work.
BTW if you have ever burnt food in a pressure cooker (tomato based recipes seem especially risky) then you will experience what it means to have food welded to a pan bottom.

To check whether a pipe is cold or hot, use the back (outside) of your fingers.

Not sure if the smiley's supposed to indicate a joke but can't let the rhubarb thing pass without comment. The acid in rhubarb and some other fruits and veg can dissolve the Aluminium and has been linked to assorted health problems, not least Alzheimer's. Of course, that's probably been debunked by now but worth thinking about.

Actually an excellent safety tip because on contact with extreme hot or cold, the fingers contract, so touching with the front of the fingers, ot tips, may cause your to acually grasp the surface.

Hey, I'm not just a pretty face :p

We have a rice cooker now. It's great (but slow) for cooking rice.
