Ah, so the newspapers said she said it, I get it now. We can trust them to tell us the truth right? not spice things up, invent things, misquote etc. for the sake of making money?
 
For the sake of clarity, what she said was work with us (the SNP, Greens and Plaid Cymru) to keep the Tories out. the SNPs position is that they will vote with Labour for that and on a case by case basis during the next parliament. It's perfectly possible to run a minority government, you don't get to steamroller your policies through so you have to pick the ones that are acceptable to most. It's a surprisingly honest and effective way of governing.
 
She didn't those exact words, but that was the general gist of it.
She was adamant she would not support the Tories, but could support Labour if they were more progressive.

Err not quite the whole picture.... TV news too !! - unless you've had your head buried in the sand for the last 24 hours I'm surprised you haven't seen it.

Mind you come to think of it. I recall you denying things Salmond said on national TV a few months ago prior to the referendum. The result of that was was a nice little earner for me and well worth a bet !

Blimey, the way Clegg is being portrayed you would think he is the only politician to have ever lied!!!

What about Cameron's promise of a referendum last time around... then some lightweight reason why we then can't have it!

Its very difficult to make promises when circumstances change - Tories want tax cuts, but if the economy went pear shaped they would have to go back on that promise - the SNP have claimed they will not demand another referendum but you know if there is any type of vote to reduce EU membership they will try for another vote as this moves the goalposts.

Newspapers, TV news, same thing. If you haven't figured out by now that what you're told is what they want you to hear well there's just no helping you.

As for Salmond and what you claim he said on TV, I don't recall you posting any evidence of that but hey lets let the past live in the past and concentrate on the future where Scotland is a much loved and equal partner in these Great British Isles. That is until it looks like 'we' might actually have a say in what goes on in Westminster in a fair and democratic way...

Well no, but he was the only politician mentioned in the post I quoted and I have a particular dislike for my LibDem MP who is a perfect example of yet another proven liar.

The most dangerous women in politics today ! SNP haven't ruled out another 'once in a lifetime referendum' in the next five years. She advocates borrowing more money and at the same time not replacing trident ! The puppet master will certainly pull Ed Miliband's strings. Extend the hand of friendship... more like bite of the hand that feeds you !

The Tories haven't ruled out invading China, the Lib Dems haven't ruled out filling Cambelltown loch with whisky, Labour haven't ruled out force feeding haggis to nomads. You could fill a book with things that people haven't ruled out.

You've missed my point completely, it's gone right over your head. First she wanted to break up the union, now she wants to support it ! The referendum was branded as a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity'
 
She gave a speech yesterday where she said independence was still their goal.

The manifesto for the next parliament is a pragmatic one - even if they were to get another referendum in the next 5 years, they'd probably lose. So instead they are focussing on getting a Westminster government more aligned to their own policies.

The Proclaimers 500 miles will become the UKs new national anthem. This hasn't been ruled out by the SNP.

There's a VERY interesting piece on the BBC News website today: The politics of legitimacy. Basically, it says that pretty much all of the plausible outcomes of the election could raise questions over the legitimacy of the following government.

The most interesting question it asked is this one: Would voters think it legitimate for a minority government to be replaced by another administration of a different political colour without an election taking place? If you - like me - thought that wasn't possible, then clearly you - like me - haven't been paying attention.
 
Random question came up at work yesterday - what happens if a party wins but its leader doesnt win his seat - like suppose conservatives get a majority but David Cameron isnt elected in his constittuency ?

Presumably he can't be asked to form a government because he isnt an MP and so can't sit in the house - but no one else can lead the party without a party election to choose a new leader ?

The Prime Minister does not have to be the leader of his/her party. He/she just needs to command the confidence of the House.

There is precedent. in May 1940 Chamberlain resigned as Prime Minister but not as leader of the Conservative party; Churchill became Prime Minister but did not become party leader until October.
 
There is also precedent for party leaders losing their seats, and even leaders of major parties losing their seats. There is a list on Wikipedia, of course. However I don't think there's ever been a case of a party leader losing his seat in circumstances where he could reasonably have hoped to be Prime Minister after the election.

EDIT ... Except for William Gladstone in 1868, sort of. Going into the election, he was leader of the Liberal party and MP for South Lancashire. However the constituency was being split into two; he stood for South West Lancashire and was defeated. Fortunately he also stood for Greenwich and was elected, so he was still an MP when he became Prime Minister. Obviously the rules were different back then.

And both the Greens and UKIP have leaders who aren't MPs, despite having MPs.
And either party could end up being part of the next government.
 
I got my postal ballot paper today its filled out and in the post back for counting now i can leave the news off everyday as i have since they started telling us what they want us to hear

Hope i am alive for 2020 if whoever forms the Government can stay in power that long i can do this all over again.

Hope you won't all be envious but i had national, local and council 3 for the price of one :(
