Yes
Just got back from a trip to Dublin and normally I'd take both my camera and camcorder. However Ryanair suck and they are the tightest airline when it comes to carryon luggage, they make you test your bag in the holder as you enter and you can only take 1 bag.

Anyway, there is no way I could have taken both my camera and camcorder and clothes and fit them into one bag, so normally I'd have had to pick. Now with the 7d I was able to get these photos and this video with just one machine! Not only that but the video footage is a thousand times better quality than my camcorder especially since I did all the filming at night.

It rules! This footage was all taken using the sigma 10-20 and the canon 50mm 1.8

Good stuff!! So looking forward to getting mine in Jan!!

Genuinely impressed with the video, for some reason I had always passed it off as a gimmicky add on but it looks to be a very useful tool. Just out of interest what does it look like on life size displays? I'm not clued up on hd so have no idea really. How do you use the camera when videoing? Is the viewfinder bright enough or do you use the lcd?

I watch my videos on a 50inch Plasma HD 1080p and it looks amazing! It's leagues ahead of prosumer HD camcorders in terms of quality because you have such a large sensor compared with what camcorders at that price point have, and the ability for native 24p makes it look like film.

You have no choice but to look through the LCD screen, the viewfinder is switched off in video mode. You can buy viewfinders that attach to the back but unless you are doing something professional this isn't needed. My stuff is just for hobby work and that so works great for me.

Manual focussing isn't anywhere near as hard as you might think and I think it actually makes you more careful with what you are recording.

The other great feature is the ability to swap to 720p 60 frames and this allows you to create really high quality slow motion when brought back to 24p. Take a look at the last bit of this video of my daughter, ignore the focussing issues at the start my wife hasn't quite got the hang of it yet :-)

Great video, I too had dismissed wanting video on a SLR, but starting to see the possable benifits now

Joe they are superb shots and video's well done!! Like a lot of people I am looking to the 7D for its speed/high iso performance/high crop potential etc but this video thing is growing on me!!

What CF cards are you using?

I still prefer my HF100 HD camcorder to my 7D for video. However, the 7D is better than the HF100 for pictures:).

For me, the lack of full autofocus kills video on current DSLR's. It is like having to use manual focus for taking pictures - a real pain in the rump unless you have time to compose everything before shooting.

Saying all this, you can get really excellent results from the 7D if you put the time and effort in.

I use the Sandisk extreme IV 16gb and intend on getting another the same for when I record a lot of video.

I think the lack of autofocus is just a small niggle and worth putting up with for the fact that:

a) I only have to carry one camera
b) my footage now looks like film instead of video
c) the quality of the footage is much higher
d) low light performance is out of this world with a fast lens (try your hf100 in a shot similar to my dublin video at 1.46)
e) I can control depth of field completely

to be honest manual focussing is only really tricky if you are using a really wide aperture. Shoot in normal light with a 20mm lens at f10 and you have most of the image in focus at all times, it's only if you are isolating your subject that you have to be more skilled with manual focus.

I added a few comments in red. I am not knocking the 7D because it is a really great piece of kit. If I want to take photo's, I take my 7D but if I want movies I take my camcorder. If I could only own one it would be my 7D but I own both, and the HF100 weights very little, takes up little space, and it's AVCHD video format plays back on my PS3 without the need for conversion.

a) I only have to carry one camera But how many lenses? I like the 12x zoom and IS on my camcorder
b) my footage now looks like film instead of video 24P is love it or loathe it. Panning can look pants and fast motion is a no-no
c) the quality of the footage is much higher It certainly can be once you get the subject in focus
d) low light performance is out of this world with a fast lens (try your hf100 in a shot similar to my dublin video at 1.46) Agreed, but the lens makes more difference than the 7D sensor which gathers less light per pixel
e) I can control depth of field completely Agreed, but I do get the hump with focus control due to my lack of skill

How about when you want to take pics and video though? Then you have to take both. Also AVCHD is a pain is the ass, or at least I found it to be, ok so your ps3 plays it back, but how often do you watch footage before editing it? I can edit 7d mov files straight off the bat with no conversion in FInal Cut. I have to convert my AVCHD to apple pro res and balloon the video in size to edit my old avchd footage

c) the quality of the footage is much higher It certainly can be once you get the subject in focus You should try again, focssing aint that tricky, just use smaller aperture

good footage, how would the 18-55is work on this in video mode? can you keep the is on for the full length? or just for a few seconds?

Thanks Joe, this may be of interest: the new sandisk extreme cf 60mbs cards replace the IV range, are faster and cheaper!!

Best shot of the video for me was the guy in black, against a black bsackground, playing the bagpipes. Surely the ultimate low light challenge for any camera?

It would be fine in reasonable lighting since the aperture only goes down to 3.5 . As for the IS it works throughout the shooting but it makes noise when running which is then amplified since its right next to the mic. I havent tried shooting with IS though. Also drains the battery more.

There is a video on this page http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?p=266851

Yeah that was with the 50mm 1.8, wide open, 50 shutter speed and 500 ISO. There is no noise at all on the video. And very minimal light from the moon. I was very impressed with it at that point

Hi Joe,

There are a few devices on ebay that will do this, look for "digital photo storage" and they should pop up.

Thats really impressive.
I have the 5D Mk2 and haven't used the video facility rather than a wee play about with it.
I can imagine with the camera on a tripod out in the field the quality would be really good.
What video editing software did you use?
Have you tried playing the videos through an HD ready telly? If so how does it look?

I use Final Cut Pro, and yes I have watched ots of video on my 50 inch HD PLasma and it's stunning.

As for your 5dMark2 people have been making entire films with that ever since it came out, there is a firmware upgrade coming allowing you to film in 24p like the 7d, check out the stuff by philip bloom, he's made lots of video on the 5d including this one:

Nice videos but i rekon you'll get in trouble for copyright infringment with that song ;)

...oh and... i want a 7D/5D2 now.....

Actually what happens is the owners of the audio inform youtube and you get a copyright notice but are required to do nothing, what happens is that in some countries your video cannot be viewed and YouTube put advertisements on your video.

Fantastic video, I was really surprised by the quality. I almost added the 7D onto my camera xmas wishlist cos the price has dropped so much recently.

Superb images and videos Joe

Having just picked up my 7D yesterday (and joining talkphotography today!) I hope to gather loads more useful info about the 7D and produce some stuff as good looking as yours

Thanks for sharing

Well in the more expensive models, I'm sure they can AF? I know the D5000 and D90 don't but D300s does. Plus if you add an external mic, won't pic up the motor as much.

LOL just looked up this thread, and everyones a Canon! with my bright NIKON avatar, I don't think I'll get out of here easily! :D
