:D Mornin' all from a dull and damp Folkestone village. Mind you, in the pre-upgrade era here on Talkphotography, avatars did use to have location included where all you had to do is to glance a little to the left of the screen, but that appear to have been taken away. Something for our Marcus to chew on?

PS. My money is on a generally mild 'n' wet winter but hopefully not as stormy as last year - in other words, an average type winter (we should at least have a short spell of snow at some point which can interrupt a generally mild winter - something that was completely absent over the bulk of the UK last winter).

Well the highlighted bit say's it all really :D

At least its stopped raining now, the winds dropped as its "milder" (as predicted :) )
Here on the outskirts of Milton Keynes on mud.

As for the location, Marcel tried various "bits of info"
And what ever he did people moaned,
that there wasn't enough info, why's this showing and not that etc etc,
so he trimmed it to basics.

Well if it was customisable by the end user for his need (in preferences for example) rather than the admin deciding what everyone gets you wouldn't have that issue see...

Yeah but, no but, with my suggestion he can be as OCD as he likes. under preferences theres a settings section a bit like this say:


Each user ticks/unticks the bits he is interested in seeing or not. Every avatar area is the same height for that user, order is maintained but each user sees what they want to see rather than what one person has decided they can see in the distant past. See what I mean 'Arry?

I know it wont happen but that would be the ideal solution. (IMHO as a "softie")

People will click different boxes and Marcel will go into a melt down :D

The end user would see all the fields he ticked for every user. (He doesnt tick what he wants displayed for himself, rather what he wants to see). In the avatar area for the user. If say Dorsetdude doesnt want to see "Location" on everybody he unticks it, if Cobra does he ticks it. Same for all the other fields.
If a registered user hasnt filled in his location box, in his personal information section, for example then the display would be empty for that user but for me would show "bournemouth". See what I mean?

Clearly you don't have OCD. If you did, you'd appreciate that you don't have to see the irregularity. Merely knowing that it exists, and that you have created it, is enough.

Winter has arrived. :(
The First frost this side of summer was here by midnight last night.
It's a typical November day now, cold and clear.
 
Still no frosts down 'ere but cant be far off. I do love scraping the car in the mornings. Not.
 
If the medium range outputs are anything to go by, it'll be quite a while before you need to do that morning ice scraping routine again anyway.

Mild, wet and often windy over the whole of the UK for at least the next 7 to 10 days with the Atlantic making it's presence felt. It is unlikely to be as extreme as what we had this time last year but certainly a good reminder that Autumn is well and truly in the building.
Actually, even though it doesn't seem like it, but last November was a generally dry and chilly high-pressure orientated month, the only decent month out of what was a living nightmare of the winter half of the year, this time round it has that classic "old skool" feel and look about it.
 
So glad I got 9 holes* in yesterday morning! Not due out on a course until next Thursday so hope the current system is passed over by then. No frosts yet but has been down into single figures a few times.


*I say 9 holes but actually gave up on one since I was into double figures and didn't want to hold up the other 3!

sorry stuart, I honestly thought the location came up in the avatar, it always used too. My location is, midlands, a few miles outside of derby.

Hands up who are like me where I'm feeling outraged about it all, especially since I am seeing high pressure to have an influence over the UK for at least a week with dry and settled conditions (but a risk of fog and some frost becoming a regular occurrence by night).
 
Tell you summat fer nowt - chuffin' chilly this morning - crisp and dry though. Not 'ot now but not crispy yet! At least the weather's looking good for Thursday lunchtime when I'm on a course outside.
 
There was ice on the cars here by midnight,
and it was still there mid morning,
Its looking set for another -oC again over night, tonight too.

It does look like an omega-type blocking high are on the cards as we go into next week. While that is unlikely to bring that much in the way of proper wintry weather since that block in question is of Atlantic origin and our winds will still be mostly of maritime flavour, it is infinitesimally preferable than bombing cyclogenesis depression systems smashing their way in from the Atlantic, like what happened last year.

That means our weather is likely to take on a more settled theme (below average rainfall, rather a lot of cloud about and some brightness) for the next couple of weeks at least.
While temperatures are expected to stick close to average values during the day, it may tend to be chilly at night with frost and fog becoming a regular occurrence whenever skies does clear up.

In my case, I'd say that a rest is as good as the . . . err . . . well, you know what I mean.

PS: The reason I used the word "omega" is where the high pressure has the effect of deflecting low pressure systems around it, creating an omega-shaped track.

Same here TBH although we only had a couple of nights a couple of degrees of frost.

@Ian D J .just wondering how you think the bomb will affect the south this week Ian . will it just be a bit blowy or will we have to batten down the hatches ?

Greetings from Gairloch. For those who don't know, Gairloch is on the mainland east of the north end of the Isle of Skye and it is more than a bit windy just now.

It kicked off about 4am and for most of the day it has been "interesting". This morning the Scots Pines, which are about 10m or so, were whipping about and the sea was foamy. It has calmed a bit just now but the forecast is for something stronger tonight/tomorrow.

Hope you get to Orkney, Hugh. If you have been before you know all about it, if not, it is a wonderful place.

As you can see, we're not exactly being in the throes of a "big freeze", apart from the occasional frost and some snow over the Scottish hills, the kind of thing expected of this time of year despite all the media hype (especially the Daily Fail and Daily Excess).

Anyway, while I am here I thought it might be high time to issue the obligatory Christmas forecast as the big day is nine days away as I type this.

So, will be a White Christmas or will it be our usual green/brown/grey one?

And to be honest, as things stand, I am struggling with the idea of us having a White Christmas this year, instead it looks like being the standard regimental mild, cloudy and breezy type. Well, that was quick and to the point.
It's where low pressure are staying to the north of the UK and high pressure being stuck over the Azores thus keeping us in a westerly airstream that has a long fetch in from the Atlantic. All boilerplate stuff.

However, it is still well over a week away which is a very long time in forecasting terms, but as things stand, my confidence for most of us at lowland Britain seeing snow on the day is very low - so it looks like you may have to head to the Scottish Hills if you want to see snow on Christmas Day.
However, there is a better chance of some wintriness over high ground as we go into Boxing Day so those living over places such as Buxton may be in luck - but again, it is a very long way in forecasting terms.

Still, at least it should be an improvement on last Christmas anyhow. Remember that 50 hours long windstorm associated with a very deep 927 mb low pressure in the run up to Christmas last year? That had caused travel disruptions on Christmas Eve and again on Boxing Day even though the big day itself actually turned out bright and calm as it fell in a gap between very active depression systems. Hopefully there should be less of that this time round.

So there you have it, doesn't really sound inspiring, doesn't it? The joys of the UK climate with a vast pool of water to our west keeping it all changeable and mild.
As for the rest of the winter? I do think we stand a better chance of experiencing a couple of cold and snowy spells (albeit short lived) as we go into January and February . . . surely it cannot be as awful as last winter with all the wind, rain and mildness!

Let me round off this post with this doodle I did last night as we, at least here at Kent, patiently wait for the first snowfall of the season . . .

I've had a bit of a mixed bag here (MK) recently a few wet and windy days, and
a few frosts overnight,
enough to form a couple of mm of ice on the pond.

Today is at present, is mild and clear.

And thats a cracking cartoon as always :thumbs:
