The Great Meteorological Thread

Great cartoon as always Ian
Thanks for the "long range" too,
I guess n'er cast a clout Wellie boot till May is out then :D

Not wintery weather? WTF WOE were the ferns on the conservatory roof this morning then?! Chuffing chilly for sure!

:D Cobra. The synoptics we are experiencing right now would have made for a very decent summer. What's the betting that the perfect winter synoptics then occur from May onwards.

Hi Nod! I was thinking in terms of big fat snowflakes falling onto a crisp and even snowcover. It just doesn't seem to want to be happening so far this season as the Atlantic jet stream is being the major player (it's travelling straight onto the UK thus keeping the deep European cold well at bay).
I remember how the same thing occurred in 1988 and 1989 where both winters were consistently mild and damp with virtually no snow but nice whenever the suncame out.

I'm guessing I'd get shorts odds in the bookies ;)

Actually it was a glorious day in Northants today.
Heavy frost and lots of windscreen abuse with a blunt instrument,
first thing,
but once the early morning fog/mist had been burnt off by the blazing hot sun,
the temps climbed to a heady 3oC!
With no wind, it felt positively tropical

At one point, the conservatory hit 22° yesterday. Not for long though!

Well, it looks like November has finally arrived
Frosty nights, foggy / misty mornings.
Now the question is, is that a belated November
or did we just skip the summer?

Answers on a post card please :D

Actually my (live) phone app was saying it was snowing last night.
I looked outside to see a clear night sky albeit a little hazy.

I'm gonna demand my money back :D

b****r, busted.
I'll just have to follow you home from the next meet then ;):p

That's how he always gets 'em!

Hope you haven't got anything planned for this Sunday as gale force winds and heavy rain are set to make a return as a deep low pressure system hangs close to the UK. While the whole of the country will be affected in one way or another, I don't think it'll be as bad as what we had the other week (big waves smashing up coastal edges) but even so, it is going to make it feel rather bleak and uncomfortable, epecially over Northern and Western parts.

I've decided to accept the fact that we are never going to see any real cold snowy spells for the rest of this witer thanks to an active Atlantic keeping the European cold air at bay (at least that's what the weather models are suggesting). Having said that, though, I'm sure high ground and northern half of the UK may get to experience the occasional wintry incursions caused by cold air in the wake of passing Atlantic depression systems. But as far as most of low lying mainland Britain (eg, my Kent Coast area) is concerned, I've thrown the towel in terms of looking out for snowy weather.

Time to batten down the hatches once again then!
Thanks for the update Ian :)

@Ian D J ..thanks for the updates Ian ,,,,and i like your brighter web page ,,,and the forecasts for Kent as well .cheers

Well that's interesting!
Its black as yer 'at out there.
The thunder is rattling the windows the lightning is coming straight down,
Hail stones as big as bricks Ok I lied about that but they are quite sizable.
Not seen weather like this in a very long time!

Is it summer yet then?

The rain and thunder has now reached Essex. :nailbiting:

We had mother nature turn up again today this time wearing a hailstorm, felt like the cottage was being crushed and the conservatory roof had a complete covering in the space of 60secs, certainly a first. weather station reading outside today 5'c midday

Seems we had a mini tornado come through yesterday
I noticedit got very windy but didn't realise why  :$

Gale force 6 in the middle of the channel tonight. Wonderful, couldn't even finish my pint!

Mornin' all as the breezy showery-type theme continues into today courtesy of a deep "cut off" low pressure system hanging off to the west of the UK.

There'll be more of the same tomorrow and into Wednesay then there is a brief blink-and-you'd-miss-it easterly wind on Thursday and into Friday bringing a small risk of some wintry showers onto the Eastern side of the UK, but it should give us a bit of a break from this wetness. At least until when the Atlantic get back to work on us as we go into the weekend and that may produce a short-lived "transitional" rain-to-snow-then-back-to-rain event somewhere over the UK in doing so.

It won't be long before we start growing fins and webbed feet . . .

Actually it was sleeting about 7am in North Bucks / South Northants this morning.
It didn't amount to anything though.

Oh Great! Thanks for that Michael,
You can bloody well keep it too :p

Its just been damp and bloody horrible here all day :(

As we endure the wettest Winter in decades . . . with further rain and strong winds expected to affect the bulk of the UK on Tuesday afternoon through to Wednesday afternoon thanks to yet another deep low pressure system steaming in from the Atlantic.

To think I started this thread off moaning about the lack of rainfall around here.

Yep and of course we all hold you wholly responsible, for the crap weather too Ian :p

:exit: :D

I'm sure we'll make up for it by having an awesome summer complete with water restrictions . . . and it has been known to happen (going from a very wet winter to a hot dry summer - it did just that in 1990 where a wet and stormy January and February lead to a very good summer with ten continuous days involving 32 C and above in late July/Early August).

Again, I'm gonna hold you to that,
it'd better happen, else I'm gonna send the boys round :D

Thanks for the up-date Ian
Looks like I'm getting wet again by the early part / mid part of the week :(

Is there anywhere this weekend with a decent, dry forecast?
