The Great Meteorological Thread

Drove from Shoebury to Basildon (Essex) at 7am, not much rain to speak of but the wind was quite strong (not really enough to put you off your stride) and there was a fair amount of tree debris on the roads.

Mainly leaves & twigs but a few larger limbs and a handful of trees uprooted too.

The worst road was the A127 with lane 1 blocked but at least 2 trees....... Ironic that it's a "trunk" road ;)

Thankfully the house/garden has come through unscathed, although I was out there yesterday cramming stuff in the sheds and screwing lumps of wood over the doors to try and keep them shut :lol:

Not sure if the storm was as bad as forecast, locally there wasn't the same devestation as 1987 although there looks to be some pretty nasty pictures coming in from other parts of the country :(
 
Hi all. After what has been a wet and windy night, it then hit a peak with very squally winds and heavy rain at 6.30 am. I thought it was going to take my roof off!
Now it's all back to normal with some sunshine and partial cloud, although there is still a bit of a breeze kicking around.

A friend's weather station only a couple of miles from here had recorded a gust of 77 mph.

Don't tell us - you're expecting low 20s and a possibility of a light shower... Maybe even a long sleeved shirt?
 
Evenin' all. Thought I'd drop off this post before hitting the sack.

I've noticed there seems to be another round of talks regarding the weather for this weekend.

As far as this end of the woods is concerned (South East), I do think it is unlikely to be as bad as what we had recently. Oh it'll be wet and windy over the weekend but there shouldn't be too much to worry about.

Why do I think that? The jet stream profile doesn't match this Atlantic low pressure system over the weekend so there's very little to promote bombing, cyclogenesis and sting jets.
The low pressure itself actually slowly fills in as it lumbers eastwards over the UK rather than deepen. In other words, it'll be more like an ordinary vanilla-flavoured Autumn Atlantic system rather than "the Perfect Storm", well, after all it is coming up to November.
Having said that, though, this low pressure system is one will take a short cut through the UK rather than the usual route between Iceland and Scotland.

Of course, the wind will reach gale force over Ireland, the Western side of the UK (including Wales and the South West Approaches) and Scotland, but that's something they are used to as they experience that kind of thing two or three times each winter (doesn't stop the media from hyping it up, of course). Buildings over there are designed to withstand that kind of thing and there are hardly any big trees to fall simply because it's so windy in the first place. It's much the same at Dungeness where it's bare and it's all mostly bungalows built like castles.

Besides, it seems that there has been very little reports of damage to buildings around here despite all being made of MDF and gaffer tape so if your house stood up to St Jude, then this weekend should be a walk in the park - albeit a brisk one!
In short, it is going to get rather rough, wet and windy over the weekend but it won't be anything too bad for around here.

The charts does show a small low pressure system wanting to run eastwards along Southern England on Friday but that's likely to bring a spell of heavy rain rather than wind for a short time (little signs of explosive deepening). Does look a little out of place on the charts so I may keep one eye on that (does make me look a bit odd).

And indeed, it does seem to be unusually unsettled and stormy over the Mediterraneans as an arm of the jet stream is being pushed south enough to have an effect on that area.

Nonetheless, lots to keep us amateur forecasters off the streets for a while. Until then, y'all be safe.

Anyway, lots of weather to keep me on my toes since the only real horror story over this Halloween weekend will be the weather. Indeed, it is set to become very wet and blustery for some of us over the next few days. That includes up to 50 mm of rain combined with blustery winds over Southern and Western parts before the weekend is out - all set to coincide with spring tides.

It's not quite that ginger and doesn't curl over my left shoulder! (And since a trim yesterday afternoon, it's only about 2mm long.)

BTW, would "Rumrunners" make any sense to you?
 
Yup! I was at many of the Rumrunners' rallies about 20 years ago, with the ABC.
 
Apparently Alicante had it's warmest October since 1930. Incredibly the Comunitat Valenciana enjoyed an average temperature a whopping 3.2 degrees higher than the average.

And over here at Kent it is being a filthy night. Heavy rain and strong blustery wind is having the effect of making me thankful that I'm not homeless.
But I must fix that leak in the roof sooner rather than later if the model outputs for the rest of the week is anything to go by.

but it hasn't stopped the battle of the Somme being re-enacted :(

Hi Cobra! Yes, after months of me moaning about Kent having a boring climate, I think it's making up for it now. It's now blowing a gale and it's also a spring tide so I'm sure it'll give the local council a headache with shingle being washed up onto prone seafront paths and roads.
 
I invested in a new 15 tog quilt just in time, I reckon. The overnight lows here have tumbled. Mainly dry and clear. 'Mainly' meaning only until I want to go out :)
I'm reading barely 1°C outside right now.
 
Currently reading 3.7C outside and only 13.4 in the conservatory. Beautiful blue sky overhead with just enough cloud in the East to give a pretty pink glow. Barely a breath of wind ATM although it was blowing a hooley last night!

Really, I feel the cold a lot! I'm not exactly what you'd call well-insulated body wise, plus I'm single!
And it's cheaper than having the heating on all night ;)

Today has been chilly in the wind but pleasantly sunny, although I doubt if I'll see night temperatures over 3 until spring.
On the plus side, while it's not very warm here consistently, it rarely gets much below 0 by more than a degree or two.

Its been breezy here today, barely above 7oC either.
Now, if your high winds are directly correlated to your idea of "cold temps"
I guess its barely enough to fly a kite in :p

Haha. Actually high winds are the bane of this part of the Costa Blanca. I've just checked the forecast and they are due to die down at midnight. As for tomorrow.....27C, 8.2 hours of sun. :banana:

I'm going to Cardiff for a few days later this month. It's gonna be a shock to the system. Worth bringing my flip flops? :lol:

dawn is breaking about 06:45 and its dark by 17:00
So by reckoning, we must have had at least 8 hours of sun out of that too :thumbs:

Evening all, it turned out quite sunny all day today, even the sunshine felt pleasantly mild on the face by the afternoon. A relief after 22.5 mm of rain fell between 7 pm last night and 7 pm this morning.
Now I must get that leaky bit on the roof fixed. Got someone lined up to do that for next week (I can't do it as I don't have a head for heights and I'm pretty useless with building work anyway).
While most parts of the UK will have a dull, wet and breezy morning tomorrow, all that should clear away by mid to late afternoon - just in time for all the Guy Fawkes-related activities across the country in the evening, save for a few coastal showers.

Phew made it through the night with everything intact :) It was pretty ferocious here - all the citrus growers are cursing as it tends to blow the nearly ripe fruits off the trees :(
 
8.5 and raining outside ATM. Cat happy here in 20!
