The Great Meteorological Thread

And on topic, while it's certainly not HOT down here today, I've been outside in shirtsleeves for a while and still have feeling in my fingers!

OMG Nod you are brave, I saw a Northern Europeaner in shorts late this morning - I shivered  It was only about 17 degrees

I hope your beatch enjoys you being on her!!! (Sorry, I usually ignore trypos but that's a funny one!)

Hehehe, just spotted my typo - the sort that magically appear AFTER I commit the post to the internet but never show up when I proof read it before hitting the send button.

Winds have calmed slighty not much rattling about outside now, hoping to have the camera in hand or on tripod tomorrow should I say :D

Mornin' all from a rather wet and overcast Folkestone (so, what's new there?). :D
As you can see, the much vaulted "winter storm" forecasted for today isn't amounting to much, which doesn't come as that much of a surprise to me as it does provide further proof on how one shouldn't take the outputs for four days ahead too seriously, especially at this time of year.

Folkestone has become that little bit smaller today after 7.2 mm of rain has fallen so far today.

A mini landslide at the East Cliff in Folkestone (5 minutes walk from my house) taken this morning. In fact, another small section broke off nearby while I was taking photos!

It is taking me by surprise as I didn't think it actually has been that wet enough for something like this to occur, but there you have it.

Somehow the temp has been upto 13c here at some point since the thaw, been verry forgetful and not reset the thermometer and noticed it today. A bit of a milder day here today, less wind and the strong gusts have died down. I even got washing dried on the line today!

The Met office (just behind a ridge from my computer room window) forecast rain for us all day yesterday. Went to the Zoo (where rain was also forecast) anyway with suitable coats and stayed dry (due to no rain). The bonus was that others had seen the forecast and had decided not to risk it so the place was less bratty than it would have been had the sun been shining.

Worked out just fine, then. :D

Mostly cloudy here at Kent, like it was yesterday. I wouldn't mind being at one of those Scottish northern islands right now as it's snowing and thunder over there at the moment. Has to be more exciting than what I'm seeing here at Kent. :naughty:

Not fine - overcast but (more importantly) dry. Glorious sunshine on Sat and today but the couple we went with had a parent visiting on Sat!

Quite a nice morning so far here. A nice bit of sunshine with a fresh strong breeze.

:) Hi Michael. The sun is straining to break through the slivers of blue in this cloud layer here at Kent. I think the sun eventually will try and win throuogh in the end.

Incidentally, for anyone who is wondering whether we, here in Kent, will get the snow today, the answer is "No".
Perhaps we may catch an odd wintry shower tonight and tomorrow but it won't amount to anything at all. But, on the other hand though, we should at least get to see more in the way of sunshine.
This is where the South East of England tend to be on the "sheltered lee side" under a NW or N wind as by the time the polar airmass that is producing the snow over Scotland try to head southwards towards us, it becomes heavily modified (drying up) so we end up staying dry and bright - but quite cold, though!
That's why I don't get that excited whenever I see a northerly-type airstream showing up on the charts as it doesn't do anything for my location - but at least it's trying to get rid of this dull overcast sky on this occasion.

We're nicely sheltered by much of the UK down here - we still get hit by Westerlies and Sou-Westerlies but even they get moderated by the Moor. Not worried about the Southerlies - they tend to be warmer and drier (and less fierce).

Being atop the highest ridge in town, we sometimes get weird weather - it can be hissing down at the front but sunny at the back.

Rain forecast for now but blue skies!

Currently fine, sunny and clear here at Folkestone, but rather on the nippy side at 4.0 C (got down to as low as 2.8 C at 8 am). It's not even that windy.
A weakened cold front gave me a rather weedy 0.3 C as it went over us in the small hours last night. Then I noticed on the radars how it re-ignited into as a thunder feast the moment it touched the French/Dutch coast by dawnbreak. Further proof that there really is a Weather Shield over Folkestone.

Its just started snowing quite hard here,
its not had a chance to settle as yet, but if it carries on with that wind behind it,
there may well be some drifting later :(

Hi Chris!

I've just realised that it was on this day exactly a year ago when an overnight snowstorm had delivered 10 cm to 15 of snow to Folkestone. Because it was accompanied with a near-gale force southerly wind, there was drifting of up to a foot.

Today, I have spent a couple of hours pottering about in a warm and sunny back yard, which included giving the lawn the first mow of the season (it was starting to become quite thick and lush under the strengthening sun).

Hi Ian, its actually almost stopped for now at least,
and mow the lawn ?
Pfft mine wont dry out for a couple of months yet.
Due to the sun barley making it over the tops of the houses, this
time of year.
It doesn't stop the bloody stuff growing though !

Snowed quite heavily here too, the flakes were huge!

Hi Michael! I reckon proper wintry weather will have one more go at giving us a swipe in the middle part of February (hence my idea of a snowy type Valentine's Day) before snow start to become very much the exception rather than as the norm as we go into March.

:D This is where my east-facing back yard catches the sun from dawnbreak to lunch time and then it's the turn of the west-facing front garden to get the sun from lunch time to sunset. As a result, both garden get even amounts of sunlight.
Plus my being at sea level and exposed to the coast mean I don't seem to suffer the constant dampness as those living over high ground (it's quite "airy" around here).
The drawback is that the hills to the north of the town does have the effect of filtering out the rain from the north and I'm always to the "lee side" of it all under a W or SW wind (today was a good example), along with being very close to the Continent, so my lawn does become parched more often than not during the summer months.

Hello again all. Thought you might like this cartoon I did today.

This is actually cartoon No 252 of 365, as part of a year-long project called The Great Doodle, but might as well stick it in here while I thought about it.

Been a horrible wet day today, though I must admit, it was nice and refreshing standing in the rain for a couple of minutes with nice fresh air, after cooking tea!

It is now snow, and although the ground is wet, it is managing to dust some areas.

Its been pretty much the same here today,
raining all day.
However, it started snowing around 5pm,
it is still at it, and its now a good inch deep and still falling!

Hi all, even though it had snowed continuously for 9 hours last night here at my coastal location, it did not settle due to it being too wet the whole time (the air temperature was 2 C at the time, but the dewpoint of -0.5 C is what enabled it to snow in the first place anyway.

However, them thar hills to the north of the town are still crisp and white with freshly fallen snow (between 1 to 4 inches), as seen from the back of the house earlier on this morning (note the lack of snow cover in the foreground).

In this case, it turned out to be another one of them silly marginal type events where it was all in the elevation. However, it came as no surprise to me as it was well forecasted on my part anyway (sleet/wet snow on the coast but as proper snow over the hills).

Had about an inch of snow here over night.

There was a good 2 inches were laying this morning!
On my trip to Preston, (Via the M6) there was nothing North of Walsall though.

I thought that we had seen the arse end of the snow,
but its just started to fall again, nice and steady, on dry / frozen residual snow too Oh goody!

But I did get a mail from a mate in NE South Dakota, seems he had 3 feet over the week-end.
And we moan about 3 inches in the same time span? :D

3 feet? Is his name Jake (the Peg?)

Indeed, what is happening right now is a transitional snow event occurring over the UK. It's where an Atlantic front containing rain turns into as snow as it comes up against the cold air sitting over the country.
But the snow is only a temporary thing as the warm front will then eventually shunt the cold air out of the way and the snow will turn back into as rain in doing so.
By this time tomorrow, the whole of the UK will be under mild air with temperatures recovering to normal for this time of year (5 C to 9 C).
The good news is that once the last of the rain clears away fromt the South East tomorrow then we can look forward to a few days of mild, dry and bright conditions with light winds as high pressure dominates the country. That'll come as a relief to the rain-sodden country.

Thanks for the update Ian
It'll be good to get some mild & dry weather for a change :)

It was mild and sunny here on friday, then on saturday the cold and rain came back................................... I wonder why

Indeed, temperatures even touched double figures at 10.0 C dead on at 1.30 pm today.
However, the sunshine of this morning gave way to rather overcast skies in the afternoon.
