The Great Meteorological Thread

Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas like it ;)

Nope you can't blame me for that Clive,
I postponed it Friday even, and its still bloody snowing here now!

Guys and gals, I am so jealous as we basically have no snow in the North of Scotland
Has somebody turned the country around 180 degrees?

Be careful what you wish for, it's heading that way tomorrow

12 hours in and still coming down here.

Its not let up since it started Fri morning here,
its just lucky that its only "drizzling" I guess otherwise the 4 inches may have
been a little bit more ;)

:schtum:
(
we can all be hopeful
)

We have light snow forecast for tonight and tomorrow, seems to be a mix of wet snow and proper snow. Would love it to be full of the propper stuff though :D When I checked my thermometer earlier, it was at 1.1c but the cars were frosting over.

Morning all you slowly awakening souls, indeed, we have 6 cm to 10 cm on the ground after light but persistent snow fell for most of the day yesterday. It is now freezing cold so instead of the obligatory slushiness, everything is frozen.

The view from my hobby room yesterday afternoon . . .

We've had some snow over the past few days but it started to disappear quite soon. This morning, it's hovering just above 0 and all the joys of a blustery, quite strong at times wind and cold rain :(

A rapid thaw had set in today where the 6 cm of level snow of yeterday's is now nothing more than wet broken patchy cover. Suddenly it all seem a distant memory as this easily forgettable cold snap has come to an end.

But nonetheless, brisk winds had made it feel quite chilly all the same.

 Great as always Ian

There is still a good 4 inches laying around here, the "main" roads are clear though.
The few flurries this afternoon, amounted to nowt.

Hi Chris!

At least I didn't miss this bit of snow by blinking. It was a proper snow day yesterday but not quite the long lasting The Express type 1963 MkII I was "hoping" for.

The light is at the end of the tunnel for those who has had enough of the white stuff as the Atlantic wakes up and send some weather our way from there next week. All back to normal, then.

Thanks Ian, that'll do for me

Ian, No thaw around our way today....it's very much "Ice Ice Baby"

Persisting down now which has disposed of all the remaining snow but it's also quite chilly so ice could be a problem later. BBC weather predicts sleet overnight at worst, with +2°C from 17:00 onwards. Feels colder than that here, although the thermometer's reading a balmy 19.4!

Over here at Folkestone, all the last remaining trace of snow are now gone and even though this photo below was taken an hour ago, it is still quite sunny.

Suddenly this one day wonder type snowfall seems such a distant memory.

The Folkestone Weather Shield continue to be as effective as ever.

Blimey Ian!

I have sub zero tempratures,
Freezing fog and about 4 or so inches of snow still laying!

Wow  that is interesting Ian never known it to clear that fast ? the atmosphere is all over the place here still, one taken earlier today from our house.

Chapel House - Bwlch Derwin out of interest.

Well we were not supposed to get any more snow then it started snowing... watched the weather and they said we will have snow now.... make their minds up

Got LOTS of snow here and its still snowing

Bloody snowing again now. And my external temperature sender's drownded! Seems to be a common fault in the things - Why TF aren't they made waterproof?! :cuckoo:

It does look like this weather system which was only expected to affect the South West, South Wales and Central Southern England had moved a little further than planned, along with more in the way of snowfall intensity.

However, over here under the Folkestone Weather Shield, it's still bone dry with not a single flake, although it is a bit parky and breezy under cloudy skies. It's where I'm too far to the east to feel the effects of this current renewed wintry spell.

Anyway, much milder conditions will be moving in from the Atlantic (but with rain) to cover most of the UK by the end of this weekend. Some of it may turn into as snow for a time as it runs into the cold air sitting over the UK before the lot gets replaced by the milder air.

Until then, I suspect some of you will be doing this tomorrow:

That is cold hope your pipes are ok, we have been hovering around 1'c last couple of days.

Alls well, checked when I got back in later today and the temp had gone down to -7 since then. This evenings temp was around 5c. No more snow as yet, but metcheck reported heavy snow for friday, so will have to see what happens there!

Whoops - it's got real bad down here!

"Drivers and a BBC crew were stranded in Somerset on the Mendip Hills after heavy snowfall blocked a key road in both directions."

That road is my nearest main road.
Normally, if I can get to the main road then I'm OK.
It's the drifting on this strong wind that means I don't stand any chance of getting that far.
Yr.No shows the heaviest snowfall is still to come!
Garden is looking pretty spectacular at the mo; I can't see the back wall with the snow blowing into the garden from the fields.
I'll try and grab a piccy at dawn.

At 05:30ish.

Wife set off to teach her early yoga class at 06:30ish and about 1/4 mile down the hill, no snow!

The rest of the predicted snow didn't arrive - phew!
RAC website reports main roads are OK, but road past my house is 4x4 only at the mo because of the drifting.
Temp is just below freezing, so the compacted snow on the road is going to turn icy - then I'll be properly stuck!

Here's my back garden.

Thanks for the link Bill but that's a bit overkill for me - all I want is a temperature reading from the far end of the garden!

That pic from Ricardo reminds me of a rather surreal experience I had during my first Crete holiday. I went parascending behind a ski boat over beautiful turquoise water, a couple of hundred metres off a beautiful sun drenched golden beach in front of a few miles of agricultural hinterland comprising of a mixture of citrus and olive groves with a backdrop of the Lefka Ori - the White Mountains, covered in snow - in late May! Even in June the peaks are white but only a few deep gullies retain it in some Septembers.

That photo is of the Sierra Aitana, which is the highest place in the province of Alicante. It may not look it but it's higher than Ben Nevis. Someone on my Facebook just informed me that the last time it snowed in the city of Alicante, ie at sea level, was in the 50s.

IIRC in the winter of 2003 there was also heavy(ish) snowfall just inland of Alicante. They closed our school, arranged for some buses and we all went sledging, so unusual was it

Well I have been feeling very left out with all this talk of snow. But, look what's arrived! I took this a few minutes ago. VERY rare that we see the white stuff here!

I hope you get 3 feet
That'll teach you
:D

Tis just above 0 today, but still plenty of snow showers around.
And still a few inches of laying snow too.

Blimey Duncan  Hope that melts fast.

Trying it's damndest to snow again here, but it won't amount to anything.

Wow, that's a LOT of snow, Duncan!

Over here at Folkestone it has been dull and dry all day. One of these days I will get some actual weather to talk about.
