The Great Meteorological Thread

a big rain cloud is just about to go over Kent , wonder if it will fall as snow????

Very fine snow started to fall in Hereford in the last hour, not sticking yet. So won't be waxing the skis just yet.

No sign of any more snow here....broken cloud and chilly.

*edit*...donut...look out the window...nothin'

0C here with a clear sky - even went out to try shooting the stars, which didn't prove as successful as I had hoped.
May need to do some reading up on this

Snowing quite hard here with a decent covering already and more forecast.....

After what has been a fair and bright day, there was a little flurry-ette of a light snow shower about an hour ago.

Tomorrow is where it's going to be a make or break type of day as far as my location getting proper snow is concerned. While it's true that there's going to be a fair amount of precipitation around here at Kent (thanks to a slow moving low pressure system moving southwards right over the South East), it's still hard for me to say whether it'll be of rain or snow but either or it'll be lot of one or the other. Very borderline when it comes to precipitation type . . . only one way to find out.

Nope, nothing. I'm reading on FB that people in other parts of Sunderland, even just those a mile or two away, have had a little: late last night/early hours but I've yet to see a single flake here at the coast.
Air temps are currently below 1.5C and local news is warning of heavy falls from 09:00 throughout the day into the evening/night.
You might get to work but you mightn't get back :)

Its weird that isn't it, I am about 15 miles from you and we woke this morning with a light covering and its snowing here now (10am)

It snowed first thing this morning, settled on cars and grass, then it turned to rain and now I have a beautiful sunset :D

There was a load of snow in Aberdeen this morning, and they are getting another load now.
Still none here :-)

We had a light dusting this morning, but there was no depth to it.
BUT even that was enough to totally screw the major routes into London :(
(3 bloody hours :()

Its raining now, so I doubt that it will still be there tomorrow.

This morning's effort was feeble and didn't last. Council snow: Did 1/2 a job badly when it eventually turned up ;)
Just started again, and looks to mean business this time. It was just waiting for me to set off for work :p
Fortunately, I'm only 1/2 a mile away, so I walk it when the push-bike's a questionable option. I'm thinking ahead to the ice tomorrow morning when I finish!

As expected, it was a total non event here at this corner of Kent as it had rained the whole time, it was even accompanied with strong winds (although I did wake up to a sprinkling this morning).

However, it is true that it has been a mixed day weather-wise across the country today.

Groan at the cartoon Ian :D

Clever as always

I am fine thanks the photo was out the front door with compact. I went out soon after I took that to pick son up from school and that was fun!

Its snowing again tonight but lightly at the moment

Had roughly a couple of inch today. If we have a frost tonight it will be fun in the morning, as it is already very slippy on compacted snow already.
Edit, seemsto be getting abit windy here now.

Now, the next thing we have to watch our for is when an Atlantic front moves in from the west and then grinds to a halt over the UK on Friday.

Extracted from today's edition of my Cloud Master forecast:

This is where I’m presented with another forecast headache as an Atlantic frontal system try to come in from the Atlantic but the rain contained within that front then turns into as snow as it runs into the cold air sitting over the UK – a “transitional” snow event and then eventually the lot turns back into as rain as the mild Atlantic air takes over completely.
However, timings, positionings and the duration of that transitional snow are still difficult to pin down, but this is how I reckon things are going to look like by Friday afternoon/Saturday morning:
Central Southern England, the Midlands, East Wales and parts of West Scotland could see a few hours of heavy snow.
It’ll be as rain over the far South West, West Wales and Northern Ireland.
East Scotland, East England and the South East are expected to escape the worse of it with perhaps just light snow because of high pressure still being close by over Scandinavia.

We have had snow close by, but we remain completely clear
The best of both worlds :D

Wow, the contrast is quite jarring!

I have seen how the hills to the north of Folkestone (which goes up to 400 feet above sea level in places) turn white, but remain free of snow at my sea level harbour location.

So it looks like the Whipsnade nutters meet, maybe a white one after all :)

This 'hill' is a little higher Ian - 3431 feet! :)

Temperature here this morning is -7 and the postman has just delivered our mail wearing his shorts.

Well, it's been snowing since I got up at 05:45 but not enough to settle and it's still around 4° outside.

A quick guide on how tomorrow is going to pan out.

It does look like East Wales is going to be the most affected.

From a "In My Back Yard" perspective, this is the forecast for Kent only:

Tomorrow (Friday) morning will start off on a dry but rather cloudy note, then by 12 pm we should start to see the first few flakes appear in the sky.
However, we are set to escape the worse of it with 1 to 5 cms across our county by Saturday morning - especially over West Kent.
The freshening SE wind coming in from the continent mean that the light, dry and powder-like snow may get blown about into little driftlets as we go into Friday night.
It actually won't be that disruptive stuff, so drivers should still be able to get about with some care providing everyone can take their time and not race around like loons trying to do five things at the same time ten minutes ago.

A quick guide on how tomorrow is going to pan out.

Oooo - this should be interesting...
I live in the highest village right in the middle of your prediction for the Southern end of the bad bit.
The snow that fell earlier in the week never melted and the compacted snow on the road has turned into sheet ice - in short, the ground is already frozen.

Temperatures forecast for the weekend indicate it's probably not going to melt very quickly.
I'd better make sure my camera batteries are charged :D:D:D
