Dont mind cold weather but hate the rain..

Evenin' guys. A bit of squally stuff has rounded off what has been a throughly grey and damp ol' day. Not really at all festive!
Still, tomorrow is likely to turn out more brighter and cheerful for most of England and Wales. Scotland looks set to be more on the wet side over the next few days, though.
The gap between Christmas Day and New Year's Day looks settled and dry, and may become very mild at times (up to 15 C possible over the South East on the 27th, especially if the sun does stay out for long enough).

Morning campers..

Here's a picture of the sunset in our village.. the day temp was 29c.

TrabucoNight.jpg

But last night it was -2c BBrrrrr

Christmas is with us once again.

So happy christmas to all you weather forecasters from Paul in Spain. :)

Merry Christmas one and all, from a chilly but clear part of the country

Morning all..
Christmas day and we have clear blue skies the sun just coming over the mountains.
Its 14c at the moment..

And many happy returns to you too, Paul, and to everyone reading this.

Not reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally looking very festive out there, isn't it? But a cheeky look at the medium range forecast outputs (I know, I know it's Christmas and all that, but old habits die hard) does seem to indicate a subtle change to more wintry-like conditions by the middle part of January onwards.
All a VERY long way off of course (about as accurate as trying to fire an arrow at a dartboard a mile away - while being blindfolded).

Anyway, back to the here and now, hope you all have a great Christmas day.

Hope you have all had a good day! We went over to Scarborough for the day. On the way we saw our first lenticular cloud! What an amazing sight that was, couln't stop to get a pic though. The rest of the day was MAD wind wise! It was literally close to blowing us over it was that strong. Some stunning looking clouds this evening, being wind swept all over the place.

Im in Braemar and today had some very and I mean very strong winds, I guess 70 to 80 mph at least with some much stronger gusts . Tonight at the time of posting its 16 deg. no wind and so weird...... FFS! ...... I want the snow and frost.

Sounds like that is all part of a fohn effect - winds coming all the way in from the Azores, but then as it goes over hilly areas the surface airstream becomes compressed as the upper air layer doesn't have a chance to "lift up" - and you get the wind, and that lenticular cloud formation some of you have been seeing. The air to the lee side of a hilly area is also heated up in the process - hence the very mild temperatures you have been getting.
Although, having said that, it's almost quite sad that is occuring over Braemer, which is usually the coldest part of the UK what with it being a mountainous location.

Anyway, mornin' Paul, Michael and everyone else reading this. Am reporting from a rather damp and overcast Folkestone. Certainly killed off what tiny bit of festive feeling I had in me. :D
I still think there'll be a change to more proper wintry-like conditions from the middle part of January onwards.

Evening Michael and hope you had a good day.

Actually, I, too, got to see a well overdue proper coloured sunset today. This came about as a weakening cold front passed over us at dusk time, and the whole thing was actually quite long lasting.

The two image were taken from my hobby room window.

Just gone past 4 pm.

Been a while since I last got to see something like that.

Very nice Ian
The sun finally made it through by around mid day,
with the temps. struggling to meet double figures,
and gusts of around 35-40 mph I guess.
Twas bloody windy anyway :D

Hi Cobra, Paul, Michael and to anyone reading this bit from a cold, windy and rather cloudy Folkestone. Although to be fair it is keeping it fairly dry and is trying ever so hard to brighten up a little. Not much, though.

Lucky you Ian, been cold very wet and windy all afternoon here :(

Has been like that here for most of the day, quite windy, cold and wet, I can do all of these types of weather, just don't like them on the same day  Snow and proper frosts please in the new year!

Which I can't see happening over the next couple of weeks. It may get cold enough for some snowy spells over the Scottish high ground from time to time, but other than that it's business as usual for most.

Mornin' from a cloudy but dry Folkestone. Did get to see a nice bright sunrise but it's now gone quite dull as I type.
Does look set to be a wet afternoon for most parts, leading to a wet weekend.

In case you're wondering who that guy is, he's my very own mascot, The Cloud Master (note my avatar).

May 2012 be a year of interesting weather going ons . . . especially since 2011 has been a fairly uneventual year weather-wise (although to be fair, it has been a very dry one over Southern and Eastern UK).
I want to see lots more in the way of thunderstorms, snow, heatwaves, etc (not wind, though) over the next twelve months. :naughty:

Happy New Year and good morning!
Good start to 2012 (not) :)
Sunless in Sunderland yet again, so no great surprise there. I need more words for 'grey'!
The rain's not heavy but it's being picked up and made vicious by some gusty winds. Wrong direction and not consistent enough to make the North Sea interesting, though.

Apparently Eskimos have 212 different words for snow, I'm surprised we don't have as many as that for "grey". :gag:

Hi Mike, and anyone reading this bit, it's just as damp and grey over here at Folkestone with light rain or drizzle, it's not that windy . . . yet.
There is a warning for stormy conditions over the Northern half of the UK on Tuesday, so it will be a good idea to keep your eyes peeled on the media outputs over the next 48 hours if you live at Scotland, or planning to head for there.
Still can't see any real signs for any decent major wintry weather across the UK in the foreseeable future, but I'm still sticking to the idea of a change to proper snowy stuff even down to sea level as we go into late January and beginning of February. Bear in mind that the Great Winter of 1947 didn't actually get going until the last week of January.

Ah, I seem to remember that was in QI and they don't really, though it's a grammatical quirk :)
A different word for 'the snow that falls from a clear sky', 'the snow that is on the ground', 'the snow that slides off the roof' etc etc :)
How true that is, I'm not sure tbh.

Yes, we definitely need a greater range of words for 'grey'! Maybe we should do some Carroll-ising, like in Jabberwocky.

Great cartoon Ian

Forecast for today.......8.1 hours of sun, and 20C max.

:D
Grey dull and damp (just for a change :() but quite mild for January at least :)

Happy new year everyone

well went to bed last night and it was hissing down, woke this morning clear blue skies and a lovely sunrise, day out with the camera I reckon, catch up with those red squirrels

Good morning Ian, Cobra, Michael, and all weather forecasters that posts on here.
Wishing you all a happy new year.. lets all have a good one.

The weather in my neck of the woods is all a bit boring with cold nights warm days and blue sky, and its going to continue for the next ten days according to Foreca our weather forecasting people.
Thursday and Friday will be the warmest so they say.
I will want some good weather in the UK in about a weeks time when we visit our daughter.
Laters.

Mornin' Ingrid, Paul and anyone else reading this bit from a bright and sunny Folkestone.

Still can't see any real wintry stuff in the foreseeable future, in fact my prediction for a cold end to this month does seem to be under threat.
The current lack of any snow is being caused by an "Azores" high pressure system that is firmly anchored to the south west of the UK, as a result we get this prevalent westerly type winds always coming in from what is a permenantly mild Atlantic.
If we had this set up in the summer, it would produce quite a decent summer!

Hi Ian,

How about an off the cuff forecast for the last week of January for the Portree area on Skye ?

:D That's quite a stormy place at the best of times, isn't it.

However, should my prediction for things to take on a more wintry note at the end of the month does come off, then I should expect things to become more settled and quieter for your neck of the woods by then.

But until then, it does look like you're very much in the firing line for very stormy conditions tomorrow, but I should imagine you're quite used to it.

Turned out jolly nice here at Folkestone today, even felt warm in the sunshine since winds were light.

This was taken from The Leas at mid-day while on a stroll . . .

Fine%2BJan%2B12%2B1.jpg

And yet tomorrow is set to be a total contrast with thick cloud cover, heavy rain and strong winds.
In my opinion, 2012 is actually already getting off on a good start in terms of interesting and varied weather conditions!
