The Great Meteorological Thread

Well, after the non weatherday of yesterday
we certainly had our share today.
Very blustery and heavy showers!
At one point, it was black as night to the west, and hammering down!
The sun was shining in the east and I could actually see both ends of the rainbow ;)
(where I work is very high compared to the surrounding country side, but with
the Barton clangers (hills) to the East and the Chilterns to the west-ish.
This creates a funnel effect, sometimes we cop it, sometimes we see the bad stuff hanging over the hills.)

By Lunch time, it was snowing hard in Bedfordshire, was wet snow,
but very large flakes none the less :)

Cor, it got very lively last night here at Folkestone, the gusty gale-force wind hit a peak between 11 pm and 12 am and took my aerial off the roof. At about that time, a block of private garages was stripped of it's corrugated roofing and the cars stored inside were damaged by bricks that came out with the roof.

Anyway, I was very fortunate enough to have found a nice TV engineer who could come around and install a replacment new aerial there and then, along with nice new brown cabling down the side of the house (looks so much tidier for it). But, boy, now I know what is meant by saving up for a rainy day!

This prompted me to do a topical cartoon later on today:

I know I do like a bit of exciting weather, but after last night I have to be more careful what to wish for.
Hence why I'm hoping that the forecast for Thursday/Friday's event will have downgraded, or the expected active depression will steer that far South France then end up with the rough stuff (and we may even get a bit of wintryness even here at Kent in the process!).

Cant get settled since the trip to Liverpool.
Well the weather here is not that clever with day time tempertures at 12c and night time as low as 4c.
Still no camera, hopefully it will be here by Friday..

Hi Paul. Jet lag? (although it's only a couple of hours time difference) or homesickness.
Hope that once you have the camera in your hand then you'll have fun playing with it.
It's not been a too bad day here since last night, it's been mostly dry and bright, if a little bit on the cool and breezy side.

We did have a great time in Liverpool even if it was cold..
My Trudi did manage a snap or two with her point and shoot and the weather was a tag rough so I will post one or two..

We just had another quick snow "storm" Turned the car windows white and tinted the grass too :eek:

The rain soon took care of that though :(
 
Nothing but sunshine here all day, well excelpt apparently around 11ish this morning, I was in the office and sun shining, went out to help one of my colleagues less then half a mile away and they'd just had hailstones, very odd :shrug:
 
Mornin' all you awakenin' souls from a rather cloudy and damp Folkestone.

I am finding myself wondering what tomorrow evening's/Friday morning's low pressure system will do.
My take that the bulk of it will run into the South West of England by mid-afternoon tomorrow and then run eastwards along the South Coast later on into the evening finally exiting Kent by 12 am Friday morning. That way, the worse of the wind will be over the English Channel and Northern France, with perhaps a glancing blow along the South Coast of England.
But it's all in the fine tuning, certainly one to monitor as we go into tomorrow.

That's my take on it too from what I can gather from metcheck and the met office reports with the latter not ruling out the change of snow although I guess this is a posterior covering exercise :lol:

Not a lot better here, its cloudy and damp with a misty sort of rain..
Oh well there's always tomorrow.

PS.. I might even light the log fire.

Looks like some of you had woken up this morning to find that winter has arrived properly, especially over North West and Central England.

It's becoming fine and clear here at Folkestone, but very wet after a night of heavy showers (even got to see some lightning over the Channel).

I'm hoping things doesn't get too bad here at Kent tonight in terms of windy stuff (can't afford to keep replacing snapped off aerials!).

Looks like quite a few sites now think it will miss us.
Stormsurf shows the the strong winds now going to miss the UK.
Weather.co.uk isn't even a showing a wind symbol for Somerset tonight!

:thumbs: Hi Duncan and ta for your thoughts. That's come as a bit of a relief to me. As well as not being a lover of hot weather (very little danger of being affected by that at the moment anyway!) I've come to dislike wind. I'll take any other kind of weather; heavy rain, fog, frost, snow, hail, thunder, spring sunshine but not damaging winds. :D

Mornin' all from a wet, breezy, cloudy and wet Folkestone. It is sleeting as I type, and it seems that many parts of the South East - especially high ground - is getting to see some snow.
 
Just started snowing up here :) Outside air temp is hovering around 0 to +1C, so may even get a little covering.
 
It's been snowing here for a couple of hours now, side roads are slushy and the gardens have a nice white cover :)

We must be getting the tail end of your weather as its turned cold here, its 10c day time and 2c at night.

PS.. Looks like I did pick the best time to go to Liverpool last week.
 
I woke up to a good inch this morning (jeeze its cold out there :D)
It was snowing all morning but turned to sleet, there are traces on the surrounding hills
(Chilterns) but hardly anything left anywhere else by mid afternoon.
 
Hello people. I'm back on TP, after a period of illness, and glad to see my favourite thread is still running.

We had an hour or so of wet snow, here in Essex yesterday, that didnt settle.Tonight its cold and windy but dry.

Hi Sue! I did actually wonder what's been happening to you as I've noticed you hadn't been posting lately. Hope you are 100% well and back on your feet now.
I've got the ol' lurgy at the moment, just a bunged up nose and that, like everyone seem to be having at the moment. Guess it's a-this-time-of-the-year thing.
Anyway, good mornin' all you awakenin' souls from a very sunny and frosty Folkestone. If I could wake up to that every morning for the rest of the winter then I'll be happy as I've had my fill of exciting weather for now (last week's storm-force winds did shake me up). :eek:
Just as well as I had another sly cheeky look at the medium-range charts and it's still sticking to the idea of what is set to be a very mild, but dry and bright Christmas Day for most parts - although Northern parts may be cloudy and damp. Up to 14 C under "Fohn effect" conditions over the South East over next weekend may be possible. :cool:
I'd put a £1 bet in if I were you anyway. If I am a bookkeeper, I'd put the odds on as 1 in 1000 for snow somewhere over England on the day itself, so there's a tiny, tiny chance that you might make some big lolly for very little input. :D :naughty: :cuckoo:
 
Good morning all, well its midday really..

Its was actually 0 c this morning the coldest its been this winter, at the moment its a heady 10 c with cool winds but sunny skys..
Now I've kept you on the edge of your seats I'll put the kettle on..

Hope you are feeling better now.

A very hard frost overnight last night, but that gave way to
clearing Sky's following the earlier rain showers.
Its currently 3oC and sunny in good ole MK :thumbs:
 
Even here at the normally mild coastal area of Kent, the temperature is at 1.3 C and a hard frost can clearly be seen forming on cars and that - and it's just gone 10 pm.

Local black ice will most certainly be an issue on our roads first thing tomorrow morning, so watch out for that when going around on them quiet country lanes. Good job I no longer have to do that motorbike commute to work!
 
Mornin' all you awakenin' souls from a cold and frosty Folkestone. However, the wet Atlantic stuff already affecting the Western side of the UK is making it's presence known as it becomes overcast over here.

Did enable this nice red sunrise to form, though, something I haven't seen in a long time. This was taken from my front garden at 7.45 am this morning.

And if you look really closely at the horizon, you can just about make out the french coast.

Hehe. Hi Paul! It's hard enough to get into the festive spirits at the best of times, but yes, when it's BBQ conditions that must make it hard to enjoy the mulled wine. :gag: :D

Over here, at least at Folkestone, people would be forgiven in thinking that Spring has arrrived as it has been calm and sunny all day today. At 11.1 C, it even felt warm in the low winter sunshine. I swear that the lawn is starting to grow again in response! :bonk:

It even rounded off with a colour hued sunset, as viewed from my hobby room this afternoon:

Lovely sunset Ian. Been 12° here today and even had washing out on the line!! Even this evening after dark it was very mild. Metcheck has started to show rain and high wind speeds for my postcode from the 28th.

Hi Cobra and Michael. I do like my snow and ice as it adds a certain magic to things but I can accept it being mild if it comes with a nice drop of sunshine like today. It was almost a shame that today was the Winter Solstice - the day with the shortest amount of daylight!

While the Christmas Weekend as well as the following Monday and Tuesday is set to be mild and bright, the medium range models does show a little bit of disturbance as we go into the second half of next week but that's a long way off as the general mildness associated with west or south west maritime-type winds continues into the New Year Holiday weekend.

I still think proper winter weather will kick in as we go into the second half of January and last into the first week of February. Still got this idea that when it does occur, we'll know about it big time.

Hi Gridlock! Indeed that is an awesome example of Lenticular cloud formations over Yorkshire today. Caused by clouds being "carved up" by "standing waves" generated by orographic features several hundreds of miles down the line.
That is a very rare cloud formation for this part of the world, but when there is a near-straight line wind with a long fetch all the way in from the Azores, it can occur. Kent got to see a similar thing a few years ago as winds came in a straight line in from the north west.
I can imagine that when combined with the setting sun, it would make for the most spectacular cloud photographs ever. Still a small chance we may get to see this on Christmas Day and Boxing Day as conditions becomes ideal for it again.
It's little wonder why they are nicknamed the "UFO clouds" as they are often mistaken for extraterrestrial crafts!
 
Well it started of mild and drizzly today,
by mid day it was absolutely hissssssssssssssssssing down.
And is still at it 4 hours later!

I hate days like this :(
Still at least I am not working outside today ;)
