It's now pouring it down at Folkestone. 7.2 mm in the space of the last hour. This must be the first time I've seen actual proper rain in what seemed like months.

LOL - you could have been describing Somerset too!

At least it is looking like the rain MIGHT hold off for Bonfire Night tomorrow :D
Our village has a huge display; last year there were about 5000 spectators!
I'm told the sunday Times listed us as one of the UK's best bonfire nights :)
I usually grab a few shots with the P&S, but it's not the same as doing it properly with the big camera.

Not much I miss about the UK but November 5th is one of them. Not seen a firework display for nearly 11 years..
Have a good night. :)

"Just for fun", I have put together a "Farmer's Forecast" for the UK over the week ahead, starting from today (Sat 5th Nov) . . .

It's all experimental stuff and bear in mind that all this are based on looking at the charts and model outputs (no cheating by looking at the telly and "official" web sites).

So, here goes . . .

As far as today and tonight are concerned, Indeed, most of England will get to see extensive cloud cover and there will be outbreaks of light rain and drizzle, especially over the South East. Just perhaps there may be the odd localised heavy burst of rain somewhere over Central parts at around noon time and into the early afternoon.
However, as we go into tonight, most of that drizzly stuff will actually start to peter away but it will stay quite cloudy nonetheless.
It’s really the South West of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and most of Scotland that will get to see the best of any brightness today, and that will lead to a night of clear spells and variable cloud amounts for the above mentioned areas.
Temperatures will continue to be at around average values at 8 C North to around 13 C South today, then falling to as low as 3 C under any clear skies over the North (which may allow for patchy frost to set in) but continuing mild at around 11 C South tonight.

Tomorrow (Sunday), Southern and Eastern parts of England will continue to keep the rather extensive cloud cover but it will stay largely dry and perhaps there may be the odd chink of brightness before dusk.
Again, it’s really South West England, Wales, Northern Ireland and most of Scotland that will continue to pick up the best of any bright spells.
Once again, temperatures will stick close to average values at 13 C South to around 8 C.
That should lead to a night of clear spells and variable cloud amounts for most parts, although the South East is likely to stay overcast.
That will tend to make for a somewhat cooler night for most parts as it ranges from 4 C North to around 8 C South, but I can’t see any frost setting in just yet, save for perhaps in sheltered
Scottish glens.

As we begin a brand new working week, high pressure will form over the bulk of the UK. While that does sound quite pleasant in it’s own right, but at this time of the year it won’t be all sunshine and mild temperatures everywhere.

So, as far as Monday is concerned, while it is true that things will be more settled and drier across the UK, it does look like the South East will continue to hold onto the cloudy stuff. At the same time more in the way of extensive cloud cover will creep in from the Atlantic to affect the far North West of Scotland.
But other than that, indeed it will be dry just about everywhere with Northern and Western England and Southern Scotland will continue to pick up the best of any sunshine.
Once again, daytime temperatures will continue to stick close to average values at 9 C to 13 C across the UK.
Since that will lead to a settled night involving clear spells and variable cloud amounts, that may allow local mist and fog to form inland, with perhaps localised ground frosts as temperatures fall as low as 3 C (mild around the coast at 8 C to 11 C).

On Tuesday, high pressure will continue to stick close by, but with an Atlantic weather front wanting to edge in from the west, the UK will be under what’s called a “Col” type situation (a no-man’s land in between areas of high pressure and low pressure).
With that in mind and what with winds being very light, any mist and fog about from the night will take it’s time in clearing away across most Central parts - something to bear in mind if you are doing county-to-county driving on that day.
While there will still be a good deal of cloud over over Southern and Eastern parts, it’s really the Western side of the UK as well as Northern Scotland that stands the best chance of picking up any brightness, especially if winds start to pick up there.
Temperatures will continue to be average for this time of year at 8 C to 13 C.
However, as we go into the night, it does look like the Atlantic frontal stuff to the West of the UK will then try and edge it’s way towards the UK, thus will cause cloud to increase over Western parts while Eastern parts will have a night of clear spells and variable cloud amounts.
However, the risk of any fog and frost will be greatly reduced at this point, especially since it will be that little bit milder at 7 C North to as high as 14 C South.

Wednesday is where we start to lose the settled spell of weather as an Atlantic front will try and edge eastwards to affect more of the Western side of the UK with increased cloud and then eventually some rain.
But even at this point, with high pressure still sticking close by over the near Continent, I suspect rain
amounts will be quite small and if anything, the Eastern side of the UK will remain dry and even carry on picking up bright spells.
Things will continue to be mild at 8 C North to as high as 16 C South.
As we go into the night, the weather front, already bringing some rain to the Western side of the UK will edge slowly and painfully eastwards to try and get to the other side of the UK. With that in mind, it does look like being a cloudy night with outbreaks of rain – mostly light stuff – for most parts.
It won’t be a particularly cold night with minimums of 5 C North to around 11 C South.

Thursday is where this Atlantic front will try and get to the Eastern side of the UK, but by then it will be a much decayed feature giving off very little in the way of rain. Although, that said, Southern Scotland may pick up some significant rain before the front moves on out into the North Sea.
At the same time, it will brighten up and become drier again over the West.
Once again, temperatures will continue to be very much on the mild side, getting up to as high as 15 C South East, between 8 C to 13 C elsewhere.
As we go into the night, it does look like another band of cloud with some rain will edge in from the west to make things turn wet and unsettled to Western parts before the night is out.
However, the East will remain dry with some clear spells.
Minimum temperatures at 4 C North to around 9 C South.

Friday is likely to see a two-way split over the UK with the Western side becoming wet with some rain while the Eastern side will stay dry with the best of any brightness.
With winds continuing to come in from the South, it will continue to stay very mild at 8 C North to around 13 C South.

I’m quite confident that the mild trend with the UK being split in two weather-wise (wet West and remaining dry and bright East) looks set to continue into the weekend.

Summary for the week ahead: Southern and Eastern parts often staying dry, becoming bright after a cloudy start. Fog risk on Tuesday, though.
Dry and bright at first over Western UK and Scotland, then turning unsettled there in the second half of the week.

Now, dare I say it, but at least it will be mild the whole time.

And there you have it, that’s my very own thoughts for the week ahead!

Good grief
Well done that man!

Yesterday's rainfall was something else. It absolutely heaved down on my way to work. 30MPH on the motorway due to poor vis.
But even then there were plonkers still doing 70MPH + :cuckoo:

Blimey thats a lot of info Ian

It would seem that we got away light on the rain fall side of things yesterday ;)
There was a drop overnight, (Thurs-Fri)
With a few showers during the day,but nothing to write home about.
It had all quit by around 10:30am (Fri).

Today we are basking in glorious sunshine (OK so I lied :p)
Its very dull and grey out there, and getting dark already

Very overcast here today with rain here and there, and about 8c while on a visit to the coast it was 19c.. with good sunshine.

Not as good as Ians splendid forecast, that was well written mate. :)

Have a good and safe bonfire night, we are off out to dinner.

Ian was right
We were so lucky with the weather. It cleared during the day giving us perfect bonfire night weather.
I hope you don't mind a couple of gratuitous sunset piccies taken while helping set up plus one from later in the evening. They are only snaps as I was working...

Hi Duncan! Post as many away as you like. Same goes to anyone reading this, any weather or seasonal-related photos are most welcome in here.

Unfortunately I wasn't so lucky with the weather over here for it has been overcast, murky, windy and drizzly last night - and still is as I type this at 11.30 am Sunday morning! :gag:
Yesterday evening, I had this idea of heading to the hills to the north of Folkestone with my camera and capture the view of fireworks going off all over the town down below, but the fresh north-east wind, heavy drizzle and low stratus (low enough to cover the hilltops as hill fog) made night time long expsosure photography of the whole thing impossible. :bonk:

Oh well, there's always next year. :naughty:

Today its been cloudy in the morning and sunny this afternoon.. just scrapping 22c..

Today its been cloudy in the morning and sunny this afternoon.. just scrapping 22c..

Pretty much the same here...................

Just 12 degrees lower and without the afternoon sun :p

Weekend was dry here, sun came out yesterday afternoon so I decided to cut the back lawn which is still growing fast
Today tidied the front gras etc. and that's it now no more gardening this year. need some frosts and cold wether to stop things growing

Thats nippy, Brrrrr
Not really dropping that much overnight but I did hear that we are set to get colder
(overnight that is):(

Its been a grey day and drizzling constantly :(

And over here, the anti-cyclone gloom continues (caused by a layer of cool and moist air being trapped and held in place by a "warm" high pressure). If I could think of the most non-descript boring weather day of the year, it has to be today.
It does look like being the same for most parts tomorrow. But then hopefully the cloud layer will tend to break up a little on Thursday, and along with temperatures being slightly above normal for this time of year that'll feel warm in any sunny breaks under a light to moderate south wind.

Without sounding like a Daily Express article, but I am sensing that there may be a change in our weather pattern as we go into the second half of this month. It's all a long way off of course but my spider senses are starting to tingle. :suspect: :suspect: :suspect:

Hi and mornin' Paul. Indeed, it's cloudy and wet over here. In fact, we've had overcast and gloomy skies for four days straight and it's making me depressed (in a comedy kind of way!).
However, my thinking right now that the fact that it is actually raining means that a weak front is moving over us and is having the effect of wringing out all the excess moisture. With that in mind I am hoping to see the first chinks of brightness by midday (at least for my location).

For those who want to know what's happening over the UK (sorry Paul :D) weatherwise, the Cloud Master blog is still going strong: http://thecloudmaster.webs.com/

Hi Ian and a good morning to you and everyone.
We use a weather site called foreca which is very good and that says the weather will improve a bit.
But I will check out the cloud master site.
Just of to Malaga to do a bit of shopping.
PS. The weather want to be nice as we are fly to the UK on the 17th of Nov..

Morning campers..
The weather this morning is clear and sunny about 9c at the moment and will warm up when the sun comes over the mountain.
Off out on my bike today I think.

Misty and dull here, could do with some cheery sunshine :)
Daughter had a head on with an armoured security van last night, so been up most of the night.
She's ok just cuts and bruises and a bit befuddled, car is totalled so now car hunting again
Another hassle I don't need right now :(

Ouch! That is most certainly something you don't need! Glad to hear that your daughter is okay, though.

On a lighter note, dawnbreak started off on a lovely misty but bright note but now it's slowly becoming overcast as we wear on into the morning.
But, got this "squashed sun" as it rose over the Strait of Dover at 7 am. The effect was caused by light refracting through a layer of cold surface air, rather like a mirage.

But I suggest have a word, and get her to pick on something a little smaller next time ? :D

Started off mild and grey with a few spots around 6am
by 8am a blanket fog had descended and cut visibility to less than 50 yds.
The sun struggled but finally burned it off to produce a warm, sunny afternoon. (so far)

Ooo that does look neat! Ta for taking those photos and showing them in here. That sunshine looks lush, warm and clean.

I do get to see a similar kind of thing over here but as a lower altitude thing, usually at about spring time as warm moist air goes over a cold English Channel and produces low-lying sea fog and it comes up against the White Cliffs of Dover - only a ten minutes motorbike ride from home.

Upon arriving there, I get to see this:

Somewhere underneath that is my house. This photo was taken on April 27th 2010.

This occured a week earlier:

Morning Ian..
Some great shots of Folkstone too, I like them sort of shots.

Well this morning the sky is blue and its 12c so set for a good day, I'm off tonight to Malaga airport to take some sunset shots and perhaps a plane or two.

One last photo from yesterday our village is under there some where :)

Mornin' Paul and the rest of you awakenin' souls happening to be reading this bit right now, from a rather misty and overcast Folkestone.
The weather in that photo certainly does look a vast improvement on what what it's being like right now over here. But, this may be of some interest to you, Paul: http://www.meteogroup.co.uk/weather...fb/article/medicane_hits_the_western_med.html Although it does look like it occurred quite a way away from your location.

That was a good film clip Ian.

On a slight tangent.. In a place called Finestrat near Benidorm a rambla flooded and killed two people about a month ago..
The force of nature.. awesome.

The weather today has been cloudy and mild at 18c.

Hi Paul.

It's been pretty much the same here, mild and dull all day. It did turn foggy for a time earlier on this evening but that's slowly lifting. Still all "orange" caused by sodium lighting, though.

Evening Ian.. Just got some pics off my camara from earlier and this is from Malaga airport.

P1000436-2.jpg

This has a nice colour as well.

Aaaaaaaaaah, so THAT'S what the sun looks like! Mornin' all from a very sunny Folkestone. Off to do some outdoory-type jobs now that the desire to go into hibernation has suddenly wore off.

PS: Great photo, Paul. Shows off the dusk skyscape very nicely. :)

Hi Ian..
Thanks very much, I could get into airports and planes as its a very interesting topic for me.
Well todays weather.

Its been drab here most of day but brightened up at teatime and the temp has been a steady 19c.

Hi Ian..

You'd have enjoyed this float at last Friday's carnival (i certainly did :)).
What you can't see from the image is that everything on that float is moving (apart from the driver who you can't see in this shot as the plane is at the low end of it's arc).
Uppety up up and downtty down down... etc... etc...

20111111-202513-MG9119-L.jpg

And on the weather front - last Fridays carnival was one of the worst ever, at times the high street looked more like a river.
But the show must go on, etc :cuckoo:
