The Great Meteorological Thread

Not so here, it's been another fine and warm day at Folkestone, with just the odd cirrus punctuating the blue sky, like giant comma signs.

Hi Cobra, it does look like you are under a weakening cold front that trails all the way back to the Azore, it is a decaying feature as it succumbs to a strenghtening European high pressure.

I'm starting to wonder if the record for the hottest October's day may be under threat if the charts are anything to go by. The current record is 29.4 at Cambridge on the 1st Oct 1985 . . . could that be beaten this week? ).

Well its still Sept until Sat so its gonna have to hang on a bit if it wants to beat an Oct. record :D

And thats the story of my life Ian, "a cold front"
the storm never developed BTW but its still 18oC out there :)

:D That's true, still a very long way off. I'm kinda hoping that the heat will slowly build up as we go through the week. :naughty:

That'll do for me. Thank you! :)

Sounding good for the Indian Summer

Pretty dull and overcast here at Pontins Southport!

Would that be in the bar, Toby?

How did you guess?? ;)

I've found a bar stool with a window that opens next to it, so can lean out to see if its stop raining, so I can run back to my flat!

Another overcast morning here...

Beach party tonight though! (Inside... thank god!) With Greg James from Radio 1!

The blue skies are back. :D

This was taken a few minutes ago, straight out of the camera.

Exactly the same here in sunny Ainsdale on sea for me Ian!

:)

Lots and lots of vapour trails too :)

A chilly morning with fog here but has brightened up and sunny with blue skys now

Pretty much the same here too.
very misty, 1st thing. But the sun burnt it all off by late morning.
Its about 20oC and clear blue out there right now :)

And this warm, dry and sunny spell looks set to last until at least Sunday as more of the UK benefit from it. However (and there's always a "but" with our weather), night fog might provide an obstacle, especially since nights are getting longer and so therefore provides more time for temperatures to cool down while humidity levels remain high.

(and there's always a "but" with our weather),
and don't we know it :p
But hardly surprising as you say with the warm days and long nights ;)

Ian - weather websites are markedly different for the middle of next week.
Stormsurf shows a strong Northerly wind Wed/Thu, but it's right at the end of their long term forecast.
weather.co.uk doesn't agree, it shows this warm weather continuing.
TWO is somewhere in between with a marked drop in temperatures but winds not as far North as Stormsurf
What's your 2p?

Hi and hello fellow TWO reader! :-D. Indeed, the models are having trouble getting to grips with next week's outputs, but my take on it is that there will be a cool down from Monday onwards as winds come in from the west or north west. It's where that high pressure currently sitting over Central Euroope will gradually move westwards and re-position itself to the south west of the UK over the next few days. It will certainly become windy again over North England and Scotland on Monday and Tuesday.
However it will stay predominately dry - more especially over the Southern half of England - as that high pressure continue to stick very close to the UK anyway.
A shame it won't all end in a explosive light show like how most good heatwaves usually end. Instead this warm air will just be merely be displaced by cooler and fresher air with very little drama by next Monday. What a waste of all that heat and energy!

A side mention; the record for the hottest September 29th has just been broken (not to be confused with the hottest September's day - that's 35 C at New Malden, London, on 1st Sept 1906).
Northolt reached 28.3 this afternoon, thus beating the 29th Sept record of 27.8 C at York in 1895.
A large number of other locations across England has also recorded 28 C this afternoon.

The record for the hottest October day (29.4 C at Cambridge on 1st Oct 1985) looks set to be beaten, but we'll have to wait until Saturday for that to happen . . . or rather, if it happens.

And I'm sitting here in a decidedly frosty 26oC :(

:D

Thanks for the prediction update Ian

Lovely shot matey

Jeez I must admit, I wasn't expecting it to be as hot as it was today! Although I didn't doubt you of course, Ian :p
But bloody hell, how crazy to have temps like that this time of the year.
No wonder we are all poorly in Fozzy Towers :D

Hi Cobra and Andy (hope you all get well soon). Indeed, this is turning out to be a remarkable spell of weather. Although after the uninspiring summer we just had, I think all this seem quite unreal as well as an unexpected bonus.
Although tomorrow I'm going to do a bit of calculation and see if September's average maximum temperatures for Kent is actually warmer than July's.

But in the mean time, it's days like today when I'm so glad that I'm no longer a greenhouse worker!

Hi Ian,
I love reading your threads. Very interesting. Help me out here and please tell me that all of these rumours I keep hearing about heavy snow in a few weeks are wrong. :(
I'm being a tad selfish here. It really is bad for business. :D Last years cost me a few grand.
Frost I like. Car batteries die. A bit of snow isn't bad. But snow like last year is bad. Customers can't get their cars into me...;)
I think it's ok to be selfish every now and then.
Cheer me up please mate.

Hi Kev! Hehe, if I had a £1 for every time that snowy October forecast has been mentioned, I'd be rich beyond my wildest imagination. :naughty: :D
It's where the Daily Express and Daily Mail had picked up on just the odd off chance comment based on a rouge computer output, and next thing we know, it's Snowmaggedon-type-front page headlines!
October snowfalls over England are extremely rare, except perhaps over the highest ground (the Pennines, Cotswolds, etc). Usually the first significant snowfalls in October occurs over the Scottish hills and mountains but even that is uncommon.
However, in October frost does become a regular thing as it continue to grow darker for longer with each passing day.

I'm not really a big fan of long range forecasts as we'd be entering crystal ball type guessimate territory, but I will provide an answer to what this autumn will be like anyway. It's all based on average trends, what the computer outputs has been saying lately, that kind of thing.

I'd say that the end of September (as you already are aware) and the first half of October will be dry, warm and quite bright (the makings of an indian summer), especially to the south of the UK.
But then a pattern change will take place in the middle part of October thus leading to unsettled conditions as we wear on into the second half of October and into November as the Atlantic wakes up. That'll keep things mild and wet, and may even become stormy at times.
By Decemeber, THEN thing willl start to turn colder with snow becoming a regular occurance as a Northern Blocking pattern sets in (pressure being high to the north of the UK thus forcing winds to come in from the east). But I don't think it'll be as harsh as what we had last year.

Like I said, all this should be taken with a large pinch of salt but that's my take on things.

Looks like I will be getting good weather down on the Isles of Scilly then, I'm there from the 7th for 2 weeks. I have been going since 2001 each october and saw my first frost on St Mary's which was a surprise to both me and islanders. Will be interesting to see what weather brings this year.

Thanks for the prompt reply Ian! I'll order lot's of batteries tomorrow then! I do like frosts! :D

*** Newsflash ***

The record for the hottest October day (29.4 C in 1985) has officially been broken.

Gravesend, Kent, has reached 29.5 C at 1.30 pm today (Sat 1st Oct) - it is an approved Met Office recording station, hence the "officially" part.

Of course, dozens of "unofficial personal weather stations" will have recorded higher values than that elsewhere across England, but it must take into account positioning of sensors and how effective it's shielding is (as daytime temperatures are always recorded in the shade for accuracy).

What a remarkable weather event this is turning out to be!

Cool :)
(or should that be hot? :D)

Glorious here too with just a few wisps of light cloud

 And the latest data outputs have now put it at 29.9 C at Gravesend at 2.30 pm. Just 0.1 C of the magic 30 C mark. Will have to wait until tomorrow to see what the Met Office has to say about that.

Hi Cobra, I spent most of the day sat out in the front garden. :naughty: I still think the sun has enough strength to top up my tan.

And enough in it to make the friggin' grass grow too, just when I thought
it was safe to go back in the water put the mower away for the
year :(

OUTRAGEOUS!!! It's only 26C here :razz::razz:

The important thing is that you folk enjoy it while you have it :)

It looks to be going a little tits up before weds,
back to the seasonal wet and windy, from the looks of things,
and around a 10oC drop in temperature too :(
Oh well its good while it lasted

Grass grow? I'm surprised my lawn still has some green left on it! :'( :D

There is a gradual cool down as we go into next week but it looks set to remain dry and bright over Southern and Eastern parts as high pressure sticks close by. Just that we'll lose that very warm Mediterranean feed as that will be replaced by mild/temperate tropical martime stuff. It'll also become noticeably breezy as well. And as Cobra mentioned, it'll become more unsettled over Western and Northern half of the UK.

The average temperature for London at this time of the year is 14 C, it was 16 C above average today.

Hi Ian
It seems that we must have managed to maintain just about the right balance of rain v Sunshine
I guess anyway, yep its still green and growing
:)

Anyone got any spare sheep :D, my poor dog is going to get lost in the grass soon when he goes out, he's only got short legs
Hot and sunny here yesterday, accodring to the temperature on the car it was 27° drving home at 5.30pm last night and woke to a fantastic sunrise this morrning and looking to be another scrocher

Well now the weather has gone to hell I see that Ian has gone into hiding :D

I'm still here, hehe. Indeed, it's now gone properly cool and fresh even over here, although it has been a bright day where my area have avoided the showers.

Thought this thread may fade into obscurity now that summer is "officially" over, although I'm sure there will be renewed interest in it all once we get to expect our first proper snowfall. Won't be for a good couple of months, I reckon.

Its been a howling 45MPH recorded on the land fill today
Although its quite high I might add ;)

A few very light showers didn't last more than a couple of minutes.
And it would seem that a little snow did fall reet oop norff, well according to Radio 2 earlier anyway.

Apparently some snow did fall over the highest ground of Scotland today.

And right now I'm in complete pyjamas gear and have the first frosty toes of the season, a complete contrast to only a couple of nights ago when I was in shorts and sweating a lot as I struggled with the humidity!

Hope y'all had a good week.

Had some brief showers today, including this one which passed over Folkestone at around 3 pm this afternoon.

SquallOct11.jpg

It was a weak and well decayed squall line but it did a good job in cleansing the air and making things feel that much fresher and cooler.

If the truth be told, I am quite welcoming this change in our weather as the air quality is now so much better. I was getting a bit bored of the stale smell of BBQs and takeaways (there's lots of those where I live what with me living in a seaside town) hanging about in the still and muggy air during the summer evening. :gag: :D

Anyway, the weekend does look set to be a rather cloudy one with outbreaks of drizzle for most parts. It is only the far South and South West of England that may get to pick up the best of any sunshine.

High pressure is likely to re-establish itself close to the UK as we go into next week, thus keeping the "Indian Summer" theme going, at least for the Southern half of the UK. Of course it won't be anywhere near as "hot" like last week's "last minute heatwave", but I reckon there'll still be some warmth left before the real proper cold kicks in (as in terms of single figure-type temperatures which is usually around the second week of November based on trends).

Have a good weekend whatever the weather is. :)

Yep we've got the drizzle today.
And a cool breeze too.
Autumn has finally arrived I guess :)
