The Great Meteorological Thread

I hope you mean my test shots Jean!

Gary, I'm sure they'll be picture perfect!

Cheers!

As for the weekend's weather, I'm afraid it doesn't look good at all. Very unsettled, windy and showery right across the UK, possible storm force winds over Scotland. If anything, it's going to feel more like October than June.
Of course, it's still quite a long way off but the early signs aren't that encouraging.

You don't like me now, do you? ;)

I don't mind it being cold on Saturday - or even gale force winds, I just don't want to have to do the group photos indoors. (looking for stampy foot smilie)

I haven't gone off you --- y e t , Ian, but I could if it's hissing down Saturday afternoon over Winchester! :p:p:p ;)

Just don't tell Mr Genie can't be doing with jealous O/H's :D

Mr JG gets hangovers!!!! It hurts too much getting jealous when you're hungover - apparently! ;)

Jean

Mornin' from what is a rather cloudy Folkestone althought it does look like it wants to brighten up a little bit.

Here's today's forecast for those who are interested. This is my ongoing little weather forecast blog: http://thecloudmaster.webs.com/

Regarding that bit of unsettled weather for Southern parts on Friday and Saturday, the signs are still there, although a couple of the model outputs has the low pressure running further south and slightly later on in the time frame - that means that the worse of the wind may occur over the Channel and Northern France on Friday night.
The jury is still out on this, but one thing for certain is that this low pressure system in question is a small but very fast moving and active thing, probably take only a few hours to run it's course as it make it's mad dash across Southern England. It's the timing and positioning of it that still need to be ironed out, but either-or, it's still going to turn quite wet 'n' wild over the South on Friday mid-day and into the afternoon and then the South East on Friday evening (most likely later on in the night) and into Satruday morning - much like what we had last Sunday evening but with a bit more clout.
As always, watch this space.

But for now, you all have a good day, be well and avoid the drizzle.

Cheers for that Ian, I am supposed to be rolling round a field trying to get pictures of lawnmowers racing this weekend :lol:
Gonna be fun in the rain :D

It could be the way your trousers hang around your legs, perhaps you might need a new belt? :D :naughty:
. But because it does it with such regularity it is perfectly possible to predict the time and position of moon rises and moon sets and the height in the sky at any time of the year for the next 200 years. Even right down to high and low tides and heights.
Yep thats the bit I don't get Oh well I'll stick to something simpler
like Einsteins theory of relatives Relativity :D

Mr JG gets hangovers!!!! It hurts too much getting jealous when you're hungover - apparently! ;)
Jean
Thats OK then we just won't tell him ;)

We did the drizzle bit here late morning, and for now its quite dark
cloud cover, with heavy rain predicted for mid afternoon
looks like the paid liars are going to be right ;)

Thanks Ian. You're still on my Christmas card list! The wedding's not till 3 pm on Saturday, so I'm still in with a chance of getting the group shots outside at the church instead of indoors at the hotel. I hope! As always, I'll rock up with enough lights to compete with Blackpool illuminations - just in case. The church would make a much better backdrop - so do your best for me, please.

Thats OK then we just won't tell him ;)

Sir! Are you suggesting subterfuge? Tut tut :naughty: :nono: :suspect:

Jean

Not suggesting anything it must be your "mind" :D

Thick cloud cover still, after a few broken patches.
Seems as though the Lunar Eclipse will be a none event here :(

We had a good couple of hours of strong uninterrupted sunshine here at Folkestone earlier on this afternoon, sat out in it and was able to top up my tan as it felt very warm.
But then cloud suddenly rushed in from the south west at about 4.30 pm and has been rather overcast since then, thus falling in line with my predictions of extensive cloud cover making it very difficult to see the lunar eclipse.

The Lunar eclipse was a total wash out last night here at least :(
Although having said that the sky went a lovely shade of pink just after 10pm last night
which I was assuming was, the reflected moon glow, onto the back of the light(ish) clouds?

Very much sunshine and showers today, very Spring (April) like :D

Hi there! It was very much the same here last night. Low cloud, drizzle and hill fog killed off the Lunar Eclipse viewing outright. And like you, today was a day of good sunshine and some showers. And fresh too!

Now all eyes are on a small low pressure/disturbance that is set to zip across the South of England during the course of tomorrow and into the night bringing a spell of strong wind and heavy rain to that part of the world. Should reach my neck of the woods by evening time.

Wet and windy :D

Ian, please can you arrange for the low pressure to zip across southern England before Saturday? The national forecasts at the moment seem to suggest windy, showery weather for Saturday, but they're quite general and there seem to be a lot of local variations in our weather at the moment. :)

While the low pressure should have cleared away from the far South East by Saturday noon-time as it lumbers over the North Sea, it will most certainly lead to a windy afternoon with showers across Southern parts. Just have to hope those showers will be hit and miss affairs, like today where I predicted heavy showers for my location but all I got to see was ten minutes of moderate rain at around 1 pm and a lot more in the way of sunshine than I thought.

Thanks Ian - I really appreciate the helpful info. :) I've decided that whatever the weather I want to do the group shots at the hotel on firm ground - the churchyard will be too wet and since it's on a steep slope, probably slippery, too. It would be nice if we can just get them done outside rather than in a rather featureless function room. The wedding isn't until 3 pm and hopefully the weather will have calmed down a bit. Keep your fingers crossed for me, folks! :)

I hope the weather behaves itself for you and that all goes to plan.

Mornin' Jean, Sue and all you well-awakened souls.

Actually, this weather system - which is already affecting the South West as I type this at 8.45 am has moved in from the Atlantic much earlier than I thought. I now expect it to reach my neck of the woods (Kent) by around noon time today (I didn't think it'll reach here by 6 pm at the earliest).
That mean it'll clear away just as quickly tonight thus leaving more room for clearer skies tomorrow morning. However, it will still be a bit breezy and you will still need to watch out for showers but like before they tend to be hit and miss affairs.

Anyway, y'all have a good day, be well and avoid the drizzle.

Hi Ian, many thanks for the update. It would be great if this squally weathered ******** off sooner rather than later! Cheered me up no end! ;):D

Have a good week-end, everyone,

Jean

A very mixed bag today so far.
It was quite a pleasant start to the day, but by mid morning that wind was bloody chilly :(

A few spots around noon soon turned into a torrent with the roads running with water.
Its all but stopped now, with a light drizzle and dark skies.

Good luck for the week-end Jean hope the weather holds for you

It's been teeming down here all day Sue and the likely forecasts I have seem are saying thunder for tomorrow !!!
Can't see me going anywhere if that's the case :(

Indeed, but there'll be good strong sunshine in between those showers - and like before they'll be hit and miss affairs.
Does look a bit wet and unsettled for the North tomorrow - but then again, that's nothing new. :naughty: :D

Well the rain started again late afternoon and didn't quit till around midnight.

Heavy showers every half hour or so here since the morning.
As I said previously you were all worrying about nothing this is the UK after all :D

It's been bucketing down here all day today, so hopefully tomorrow will be better! I'm the eternal optimist!!! Thanks, Chris, I'll let you all know! :)
Jean
Yep don't forget the progress report
Its been far too wet to do anything today, except continue building the ark of course ;)

:)

Had a beefy shower which even contained hail earlier on today at around 11 am - it lasted for a good 15 minutes, but since then it's been a day of sunny spells and variable cloud amounts.

I forgot to say,
We must have had a bit of an electrical storm at some point "overnight"
as the "time clock's" were running about half an hour late this morning

Been sunshine and heavy showers all day since 11am, even had a clap of thunder
Just driven back from Worthing and one of the showers was so bad I could hardly see where I was going
b****r my lawn really needs cutting now or anyone got any sheep I can borrow

Sorry for not checking in recently... lots of exams :gag:

Its been like meteorological porn here in Norfolk today!! Lots of torrential downpours with intermittent thunderstorms - well odd rubbles here and there with the odd flash! Every now and then we'd have a break with some sunshine! Lots of groovy clouds too, unfortunately being at work I couldn't take any pictures... sorry ! ;)

Glad I didn't go on the Banham zoo meet today! lol.

In the space of this post and my previous post, its gone from a lovely sunset to a full on arse wooping torrential downpour... AWESOME!! :)

--I've actually had to turn my telly volume up cause I can't here it cause the rains so hard!

We had some rain in the morning yesterday but then it stopped long enough for me to go and photograph a local village three legged race and fete which was great fun. There was sunshine but dark clouds were coming our way. Just after the fete finished and I was on my way home it absolutely tipped it down and at one point I considered stopping because it was so difficult to drive. This morning is sunny so far in my part of Essex.

Mornin' all from quite a cheerful and bright Folkestone - perfect for today's Race For Life event taking place in the town very soon.

Ta for all the reports and news regarding yesterday's weather! However, I wonder how Jean got on with her wedding photoshoot?

The day started out very, with well clear blue skies / developing in to "Simpson skies"
I wouldn't be surprised at the time of writing, if that doesn't further develop into an electrical storm,
looking out the window right now.
Its turning muggy under darkening skies ;)

Thanks for asking, Ian. :)

Bloody awful!!! It was ok until about 11am. Then the heavens opened and all the rain which should have been spread over the UK was dumped in a continuous downpour over the Winchester area. It took until about 9 pm to empty the celestial bucket. :bang::bang::bang:

It was so bad when the bride arrived at the church, that the vicar told her to wait in the car a while to see if it would ease off. But 15 mins later there was no let up and she and her dad made a quick dash from car to church. The vicar sensibly wore wellies!

I took a photo on the M3 on the way to the reception and it looked just like November - no visibility, grey and thoroughly miserable.

Then we got to the hotel to find they'd set up the room differently leaving one tiny corner with immoveable furniture, an emergency exit with ill-fitting curtain and a whole bouquet of fire extinguishers for the photos. And to crown it all, when I set the Bowens up, one of the modelling lights blew. Then, when I thought nothing else could go wrong, the hotel insisted they had to serve the meal half an hour earlier because of all the people milling round in a very small bar area. Grrrr ....

I can quite see why some toggers won't do weddings.

The good news was we all had a great time (Dunkirk spirits to the fore!) and - thankfully - I got all the shots the b&g wanted, with great support from Mr JG and the best man. I'll post a couple up when I've had chance to sort through them. :)

That's a lovely description, gotta use that for my reports! Indeed, I wouldn't be surprised if thundery stuff start to break out as the warmth and humidity increases over the next few days.

Thanks for asking, Ian.

Awwww nooo. I am gutted for you! So sorry to read that it did not go according to plan. :shake: :'( :(
That's the thing with weather and photography, it either works to your favour, or go totally against you! Unfortunately in your case, it was very much the latter.  :)
Looking forward to seeing what you have taken nonetheless.

But glad it sorta worked out in the end

Feel free Ian  :D

Well its been hissing down, for about an hour now, but cooling off rapidly.
No electrical storm for me tonight by the looks of things :(

Sorry to hear you had awful weather Jean.

Thanks for the sympathy everyone. Your support meant a lot. In fact it kinda validated my obsessional preparation, car full of gear and generally driving my family mad for a week beforehand. The only thing I didn't take but should have was a coat for me! :bonk: Oh and I probably shouldn't have worn white trousers! :gag:

We're still getting plenty of rain - cool, changeable and totally unpredictable. But at least our water butt at the allotment is now

f u l l

and the broad beans are doing nicely. :D

What's next on the weather agenda, Ian?

Hi and mornin' Jean. Glad to see that you are keeping a positive spin on things. ;) And you are still talking to me after all that, hehe. :D

That is a good question towards the end of your message, and I will provide just as a good answer.

A warm up over the South and East of the UK on Sunday and onwards is pretty much nailed on as an area of high pressure moves in from the south west. Up to 25 C inland is expected on Sunday - thus making for a very pleasant and warm end to Glastonbury. We COULD be seeing 30 C somewhere over the South East by Tuesday as winds wafts in from the near continent . . . but then we end up paying the price for it in terms of increased thundery activity.
Indeed, it does look like Summer is set to start properly very soon, although we still need to get through today and tomorrow which will stay fresh and be packed full with showers (it's actually coming over dark and threatening looking as I type this at 9 am and I need to get the food shopping today!).
However, how long THAT Summer-like spell will last is still debatable, so as always with our climate we might as well make the most of it while we can. :cuckoo: :D
