The Great Meteorological Thread

G'morning to you, too, Ian (and the rest of us weather watchers). We had rain overnight! I really must set up a rain gauge because I've no idea how much until I get down to the allotment. Your prediction looks to be holding good for down here, Ian. It will be hit or miss trying to walk the dogs between showers. That's not a complaint - I'm so glad to see some rain I don't even mind getting wet! :lol:

But we've got a family wedding in Winchester a week on Saturday, (18th) so I'd like it to be dry for that! Picky, aren't I? :D

around noon.

Typical, isn't it Sue. I don't suppose the dog minded, though. :)

Well, I managed a couple of hours at the dust bowl ....I mean, allotment this afternoon, and there'd been no measurable rainfall. The soil is as dry as dust up to about 6" down. Nothing much is growing - huge pods on the broad bean but virtually no beans inside them, lots of plants looking very limp and sorry for themselves. It feels more like the Sarah Desert than England. :thumbsdown: (I've never used that :thumbsdown: before!)

Been a relatively dry week here in the east too... First prediction of rain (according to the BBC/MET) is due for tomorrow evening, which quite nicely co insides with a outdoor model strobist meet. Not sure what Ian thinks my I'm guessing it would have cleared up seven, possibly a good helping of sunshine for a pukka sunset :D

Hope you're all keep well and allotments are gonna freshen up with water soon :)

It does look like a continuation of the showery theme for today right across the UK - and just like the past couple of days, those showers will be hit and miss affairs so there's every chance that you'll see today out being completely dry and clear!

Anyway, just woken up to this. Look at the superb air quality and visibility!

Hi Guys
We had a torrential downpour mid morning coming from the West.
Only lasted 20 minutes, I guess. Then slowed to "steady"
for an hour or so. Its all gone now, but the skies are darkening again ;)

Afternoon Jean! It's the Groundhog Day effect, althought it's clouded over since that photo was taken. :suspect: :D
A shame that it's still finding it very difficult to get warm properly even though the sun is now at it's highest in the sky at this time of the year. There's even a chance of a ground frost in inland places tonight provided skies remain clear for long enough!
Indeed, I, too, would like to see a nice drop of the hard stuff today to keep the lawn going before the real warm stuff (yes, we do get proper summer-like weather!) kicks in as there is still the rest of the Summer yet to come. Although we have had a couple of sharp showers that wetted the ground nicely so far today.

Hi Cobra! We had a couple of sharp showers so far today, wetting the ground quite nicely. :thumbs: Not bad for 1.0 mm of the stuff. :D
 
Flooded carburettor, reminded me of the joke about the AA bloke saying the trouble was "Sh!t in the carburettor" and the woman saying "How often do I have to do that?"

Seems a few miles up the road got a drenching this morning, probably the couple of spots of rain I felt earlier :D

It was patchy here yesterday - a short shower at home, none 8 miles away where I was looking after our granddaughter. :shrug:

Glad those cartoon are going down with you, Jean. Taking into account the cloudy and showery (with thunder and hail likely to pop up almost anywhere across the UK) nature of today, this cartoon couldn't be any more appropriate!

Although it is quite ironic that it is NOW that the media had decided to bring it up, a time when our weather is looking set to turn unsettled and wet! It's like a curse. :suspect: ;)
Still, it isn't as if we haven't been warned about it. Now it's hit home, all we can do is hope for some regular rainfalls - whether we like it or not. :help: :)
 
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we sent Ian a photo of ourselves and he could do a cartoon team photo of us.

Well its cloudy again here in North Essex but no rain. We had a short shower yesterday but still waiting for some proper rain.

Afternoon Sue! It's very much the same here, quite cloudy - and dark looking to my north but it's still quite dry apart from a few splodges of rain an hour ago.
Later on in the afternoon and evening does look interesting though as heavy rain and local thunderstorms will start to break out anywhere over England and Wales.

Its been overcast most of today, and I had just finished cutting the grass around 3pm and it hammered down!
Oh well the front lawn can wait :D
It was only short lived though, about 3/4 of an hour. There are a few minor puddles here and there,
but the majority of it has evaporated already.
 
Pretty naff boring and overcast today :( few spits and spats of rain but nothing worth chatting about... Was actually quite nice about 5am this morning but once I re awoke at 7/8 it'd clouded over... :(

It does look to be a bit less . . . active than I thought. But radars are still showing lots of showery stuff moving slowly eastwards along Central Southern England as I type.
If I - and anyone living over the South East - don't get to see anything of note by 9 pm tonight, then I'll wrap it up. :shrug: :D

After reading your post, I dashed out and mowed the back lawn just as it started to rain. Felt very smug! :naughty: :D

... and today dawns bright and sunny but cold! Still very little rain. :(

Mornin' Jean, Cobra and everyone else reading this thread. A spell of rain at around midnight last night had delivered 3.6 mm to my location. Every little bit helps. :D

The sun is now dancing around in clear blue skies, and certainly feeling very fresh!
Make the most of it as it all goes downhill on Sunday afternoon and into Monday, though. That's when the Atlantic wakes up and start bringing in rain and thick cloud in from the west to all parts of the UK. :shrug: :D

Hi Mr Fish :D. We've been having lots of showery stuff here. Garden is looking better for it :thumbs:

Hoping you may be able to warn us if it's more of the same tomorrow? We're thinking of going to London Zoo...and all the forecasters can't agree as usual :shake:
 
Still bursting in pride over that photo opportunity as I've always wanted to get a weather photo shown on something quite prestigious. :D

Hi Gary! As for tomorrow's weather. First thing in the morning the South West by will already be under thick cloud with outbreaks of rain while the rest of the UK will start off on a bright and dry note. That area of thick cloud with outbreaks of rain will spread northeast-wards to affect Wales and the Western side of England as we head towards lunch time.
Then the rest of England and Southern Scotland will be affected in the same way as we go through the afternoon after that bright morning.
It does look like it won't be until quite late in the evening before the rain finally reaches the South East.

Then on Monday it all should brighten up from the south west, with the rain and cloud finally exiting eastwards away from the UK by the day's end.

Tuesday does look like being settled and that little bit warmer for most parts before further general cloud cover with outbreaks moves in from the Atlantic on Wednesday and rounding the week off on an unsettled note.

We had a bit of rain overnight but apart from a few odd spots its been a warm dry day here. I dont mind if it rains tomorrow as I am going to a photographic presentation so will be indoors all day.:)

First radiation fog in the meadow this evening... Please someone why I got sooooo excited about this? Lol.

Had both a cold and warm weather front over here today... (guessing from the weather, I haven't actually seen the weather forecasts) had real hard rain an hour ago, but lush sunny warm weather today... Now really cool - explains the radiation fog :) word on local social networking sites from mates, there sounds like another storm on it's way. Including thunder... Yay! :D

I hope everyones well :)

Oooo, I love radiation fog, the way they hug close to the ground and lit up by the rising sun first thing in the morning. I've seen them while on the way to work at 5.30 am and they are beautiful. However, since I'm currently in between jobs I don't get to see them as much as I used to.
A small mini thunderstorm rumbled by Folkestone at around 3 pm today, it was to the north of me but it came over dark and I got to see a couple of distant flashes - but it never came overhead and my location remained bone dry the whole time. Eventually it lead to quite a sunny evening and that enabled me to take some brilliant photos of the Red Arrows as they flew past Fokestone dead on at 6.30 pm.


A real case of being in the right place at the right time as I waited with my D3100 on what was a cold and bustery Folkestone Harbour! The excellent lighting on the day helped as well.

Am I the only one who doesn't know what radiation fog is? It sounds scary. :eek:

Today, the central south coast is definitely in the south-west weather system. Heavy grey clouds and persistent rain. Just what the allotment needs, although Mr JG was less than happy because he's manning the wood turning club stall at a neighbouring village's open day this morning. You just can't please some people. :lol:

I hope you're all having a good day, whatever the weather. ;)

Hi all.
Here at Southampton Airport....... Yesterday we had thunderstorm warnings. I got all excited as I love a good storm!!
But nothing sadly :(
Although the heavy black clouds made for some great shots!!

Today it's chucking down. We're getting a right soaking.

It makes me laugh, the amount of people (staff!) here today moaning about the 'crap' summer we've had so far!!!
Ok it hasn't been mega-hot, as such, but it's been very dry, as we know.

Crazy world..............
 
Here at London zoo and its been raining all morning since we got here :(

Just to think I was going to buy your calendar Ian! :lol:
