The Great Meteorological Thread

A few posts up, Rich!

Chris, I reckon the carp weather (as in "nice weather for crap") will probably have hit G. by now - been a bit further down the M5 all day, ideal weather for SWMBO's new toy...

I am looking at it getting warmer again around the end of the Month, picking up from 24/25th and intensifying from the 28/29th as I am on holiday then :D Don't forget where you read this first folks

And you could be right. :naughty: :D

Over here at Kent, it's only just come over properly overcast with spitty light rain after having been quite dry and bright all day.
However, the low pressure sysyem responsible for the rain (and the unusally cold temperatures for this time of year at 6 C to 9 C) over the South West and South Wales is now starting to slowly deepen as it moves very slowly eastwards over the South West - heading into Southern England in doing so as we go into this evening and tonight before filling in (centre pressure rising) by tomorrow.
It looks like while I am set to escape the worse of the rain, I won't with the wind as it could get up to near gale force along the south coast in the early hours tomorrow morning.
Then tomorrow will start off on a rather damp and overcast note but should brighten up as we go into the afternoon but it should be a lot better in terms of sunshine on Thursday and into Friday but the risk of showers - some being heavy with thunder and hail - will never be too far away.
Sadly, that bright and settled spell won't be lasting for too long as it is set to turn wet and cold as we go into the weekend - but this time, coming in from the east.

Definitely not light and spitty here in Hythe. I can hear the rain battering my conservatory roof

Its been raining here quite steadily all afternoon
and it is still at it :(

Its been steadily raining here in Whitstable for the last couple of hours.
Its usually sunny here, whats happening?

A few posts up, Rich!

So I see now Nod  But remember the last week of May comes before the first two weeks in June  ;)

Wind's starting to kick up a bit of a fuss over here now, looks like it's going to be quite a noisy blustery night. I live right close to the coastline so I'll be feeling this strong southerly wind which is expected to hit a peak in the small hours.
Hopefully it'll try and turn in from the south west in doing so as that's when the built up hilly bit to my west then absorbs the gustiness (at the moment it's coming straight in from the Channel).

And I have to be in Brighton in the morning, Oh goody :(

And I have to be in Brighton in the morning, Oh goody :(

It should be okay by the morning as it will have all died down by then.

I can see this blob of very intense torrential rain that has been falling near Swansea, South Wales, in the past few hours on the radars - all literally running on the spot. There must be some real flooding issues going off over there.

So I see now Nod  But remember the last week of May comes before the first two weeks in June  ;)

Well, we fly on the penultimate day of May. Been persisting down almost all day with about 1 minute when we spotted a tiny patch of blue sky. Usually, in Crete, it's the opposite with just an occasional blob of cloud (apart from over the mountains where there's often some interesting cover).

already localised flooding here

It's an ill wind as our Autumnal-like Winter that is supposed to be Spring continues.

It has been generally quite bright with plenty of sunshine all day over here, but it felt cold the whole time. I just can't seem to shake off this icy fingers feeling.

Nice one Ian, tbh and I have said this in the past. Personally I think the seasons are gradually changing back to how they were when I was younger. Apart from perhaps the initial heavy amount of rain we had a while back, the weather that we have had since December and are experiencing now is not exactly out of the ordinary. " Ne'er cast a clout till May be out " :rules:

And that is absolutely true.

I like to think of May and June as like trying to pre-heat an oven from cold, so all the inital energy from the rising sun as it climbs higher above the horizon is spent trying to heat everything up from what has been a long and cold Winter.
Then by July through to September, even though the nights will be getting longer, the heat then becomes "self sustaining" anyway. That's like turning the heat down slightly in the oven so things can gently simmer along but it wouldn't take a lot to heat it up again if needed.
As a result, our most hottest days of the year usually occur in late July or early August (remember August 11th 2003?).

But for those who really are yearning for the real warmth, I can offer a crumb of comfort.

In 1975, it snowed and settled at Buxton on the 2nd of June, which even called off a cricket match.
Nonetheless, the rest of the summer as well as the following one turned out to be the best ones of the 20th Century.

Granted, Buxton is 1000 feet above sea level (thus making it the highest town in England) . . . but even so!

As parts of the UK had more heavy rain today.

Well, it is true that we have had funny weather of late.

It stayed largely dry here today,
although it was quite heavily overcast all day.
A couple of light showers, that really didn't amount to much.
Mid teens, and a light breeze.
Its been almost spring like :D

H Chris! We had a bit more luck in terms of sunshine today but still not properly warm enough to go running out into the garden in speedos and covered with sun cream just yet.
In actual fact, the grass around here are now starting to show drought-related stress as the recently cut grass verge along my street are turning yellow, it's where we have had less than 10 mm of rain so far this month and the lack of sunshine and real warmth probably didn't help matters much.

Isn't this where you came in 2 years ago? :D
I'm not sure what our rainfall has been this last month,
but I am pretty sure it has to be more than 10mm.

Actually quick web search tells me that we have had 12 days of rain so far
and 40mm of precipitation :bang:

And I'm certainly with you on the (lack of) sunshine.

There certainly is a sense of deja vu about it all. :D But indeed it's further proof how my sheltered location tend to avoid the rain.
I've also still yet to experience a proper hundinger of a real thunderstorm ever since this thread was started. I want to take some photos of a decent photogenic distant lightning flashing away over the Channel with the town in the foreground when viewed from the hills.

I expected a very wet day today, but it has been dry all day albeit cloudy and grey.

Hi Michael, it was mostly along the English/Scottish border and Northern Ireland where up to 40 mm fell in the past 24 hours, although it eased off at 12 pm today to just showery stuff for the rest of today.
It all occurred a little further north than forecasted hence the lack of any rain for your area.

No rain here in Hythe today, it clouded over a few times but nothing came of it :)

At least I got some more washing done! Hows it looking for the tomorrow and next week?

Tomorrow should be a mostly dry day with bright spells over most of the UK - apart from the far Southern England where it'll be generally cloudy with patchy light rain or drizzle.

The medium range forecast (up to 15 days) does seem to suggest a generally dry but often rather cloudy theme for next week.
Also since winds are likely to be often coming in from the N or NW, I cannot see any real heatwave BBQ swimwear conditions just yet, but temperatures may tend to stick closer to the norm (15 C to 21 C) rather than it being on the cold side so it should feel pleasantly mild whenever the sun does come out.
In other words, expect a mostly quite and uneventful week next week.

Hi Kelly. Much the same here - well, it would be since you only live a few miles away from me. :D But, indeed, it turned out fairly do-able after that somewhat dull and chilly start to the day.

I live on a hill and its not often the cups on my wind sensor are not going round lol very still outside and looks like clear sky's so early doors calling for a dawn outing with camera even if it is a Sunday.

:) Hopefully you'll have some good light and you have something to show for it, but indeed you probably get a lot more weather than I do. :D

Just back in now it was a lovely sunrise this morning, still no wind it's going to be a nice day here beach calling ice cream maybe later.

Ian, on a grander scale, what's happened/happening in Europe this year that's resulted in us (on the east coast of Spain) having much cooler weather than normal?

Hi Richard, it does look like the jet stream (a ribbon of fast moving upper air travelling from west to east and acts like a "railway line" for low pressure systems to run along) has split into two. The northern arm travelling towards Iceland and Scandinavia - like it should do as per normal, but the southern arm - the stronger of the two - is still running into South west Europe. It also comes complete with a pool of cold air being trapped and held in place, hence the cool and unsettled spell of weather over Spain and France as a low pressure system is spiralling around on the spot.
Eastern Europe, on the other hand is enjoying a hot start to the season thanks to air being pumped up from Africa - the warm air even got as far as Denmark where it reached 27 C there!

The latest Jet Stream plotting chart shows it quite clearly - the redder the colour, the stronger the upper level winds are and note the "worse" of it being over Southern Spain: http://cdn.nwstatic.co.uk/gfsimages/gfs.20130519/00/00/hgt300.png

Mornin' from what is a rather cool, dry and overcast Folkestone (as per usual). Hope you got some nice photos out of it.

Thank you, very interesting!
Can you change it for me?

Afternoon all from a rather dull and wet Folkestone where 8 mm of rain has fallen in the past 24 hours. But, all very useful stuff as I can hear the parched-looking lawn sighing in relief. Although I wouldn't mind it being a bit warmer as I'm typing this post with frosty fingers as temperatures struggled to get up to 14.2 C!

Anyway, this cartoon is based on a true story (and good luck to those taking exams now that it is the exam season).

LOL Great cartoon as always, Ian
(Is that you BTW? ;))

As for the weather, today finds me just outside Gateshead Tyne & wear.
Its actually quite mild up here, it hit high teens briefly earlier,
and a few light drizzly bits.
It actually hit 14oC by about 8am according to the van sensor
doing 80 70mph up the M1.
And was just about double figures when I left MK @ 5am

The "locals" are saying storms later, up here, but what do I care ?
I'm safely tucked up in a Premiere Inn :D

Hi Chris! That, indeed, is supposed to be a younger me in that cartoon.

Actually, the general media have been suggesting a threat of thunderstorms breaking out over South Scotland and North England this afternoon but I held back on that in my own Cloud Master forecast where I said that it'll mostly be well scattered light showers - turns out that I was correct (although a small but lively thunderstorm did break out near Edinburgh but that was the only storm of the day).

Unfortunely there's littlle signs of any real warm up for at least a week as it'll remain cool and rather cloudy over most of the UK for the rest of the week and into the weekend, although Western parts are likely to get the best of the bright spells.
Sadly, that is going to lead to a cool and showery Bank Holiday Monday, epecially over the Eastern side of the UK, and the South East. Not quite BBQ/swimwear conditions just yet.

There are signs of things settling down and warming up as we go into the first week of June but that's a long way off in forecasting terms.

I guessed it may have been you Ian ;)

Looking out of my window now, it is looking a little stormy on the cloud front,
But nothing happening other than that.

Oh and there is no surprise about the Bank holiday week-end, either.
Well lets face it we can't have 2 half decent ones in a row.
(or indeed a year) now can we? :D
