now then do i buy a 40D as the cashback promo runs out tomorrow for £100 back or do i buy a 450D and save myself £100+ quid. is the 40D that much better? i remember i sold me last lot of kit inc 30D and a small collection of lesnses because i didnt want to lug kit about, now i want to do it again!

am i mad :S

Get the 40d, Sigma 24-70, a bag, and a Sandisk extreme 3 4gb card.
That is all you'll need for the time being.

Then when funds allow, get the stuff you find you need:
If you want to go wider, there is the Sigma 10-20, Canon 10-22, Tokina 12-24
If you want to get closer, there is the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, Canon 70-300 IS, Canon 70-200 f/4 or f/2.8 with or without IS.
If you want a kick-ass lens for cheap, there is the Canon 50mm f/1.8
If you want to take pictures in low (or no!) light, there is the redsnapper tripod (which talkphotography members get a discount on) and theres the remote shutter release

Don't buy it all without knowing what you want to shoot. Buy the bare essentials and then go from there.
 
the the 50 f1.8 is an awesome lens for sure! took great pictures with it! was thinking of the 40D (see now you have made me buy one and i wanted the 450D!!) and a 17-55 IS 2.8 of the 17-40 f4 with the nifty fifty!

All I can say, is that I went to Jessops with the intention of buying a 450D, but asked if I could handle the 40D - it was a no contest. Plus it turned out cheaper at the time ( when the 450D first arrived ) I'm certain you won't regret getting the 40D

Get the 40D - it's a great camera - you're buying the latest sensor technology, and then only upgrade when you really feel the need. New models are hitting the market at ridiculously short intervals now.
 
Coming from a 400D (similar size and weight and functions apart from live view) I love the 40D so much more, much better feel, faster frame rate, better buffer, but all in all it just feels better, with the wheel on the back its much easier to change settings. Sure I got used to the 400D buttons (450 similar) but the wheel makes it just a little easier. Also remember that the 40D is compact flash and the 450D is SD, and if you are like me I prefer compact flash, I have had too many SD cards corrupt.

found that the view finder on the 40D is much brighter, and the fact you can change the focus screen is a bonus. All in all, love mine, get a 40D and you wont regret it. Nice features are the battery - 1000+ shots from a single battery, and the grip is compatible with the older one, so you can pick up a grip for £70+, I got the newer one from MPB with a battery for £86 which is a bargain and it all adds up.
 
nice one guys!! you just made me spend £600 on a camera! wilkinson have them with a 3 year warranty too FOC invoice printed ready to rumble for the cashback promo! back again to the slippery slope of cameras and lenses!

I bought one yesterday too, promised myself I would resist but what can I say.....

breaking strain of a Kit-Kat, honestly.
 
I did exactly the same, Wilkinson Cameras, 599...breaking strain of a kit kat.

apparenty canon prices are on the up due to a crappy Euro rate...

Yup. Not sure where I read it, but due to exchange rates, value of the pound etc etc and some other stuff that I really don't understand,....

The cost of Canon stuff, including RRP's is going up very soon.
 
can't see body prices being increased significantly by canon, perhaps lens prices though
 
I'd better get my ass in gear with my new kit then. I've managed to miss the cashback period (boo!), but at least I've finally got the money for some new gear.
 
got the 40D it is indeed very good, love the new menu system and lens cleanng rom the 30D and it seems a better fit for some reason (is it just me?)
pity i have no lesnse to attach to it *** lol!! still cant decide what to go for :(

LMAO. I had exactly the same dilemma and went and bought the 40D at 21:48 on the last day of the promotion. It's replacing my 10D and I can't wait - should be here tomorrow. If it makes anyone feel better I paid £1300 for the 10D when they first came out. :eek:

Err the 450d has a newer sensor, more MP and digic 3 processor.

The 40D has the DIGIC III though doesn't it?

As for the sensor, while technically true, more MP doesn't equal better image quality.
The physical area of the sensors are the same, theyve just crammed more (and smaller) photosites into it, which will result in more noise wouldn't it?

Well we'll have to see, but it has 2 million more pixels than the 40D, and whether they introduce noise or not depends on the overall engineering of the sensor, not just the pixel count.

If there isn't a big noise issue, then it's going to be the camera to stick behind a long lens. Interesting! ;)
 
i got the 40D in the end as it seems more solidly built and its bigger and fitted my larger hands.
 
In all honesty you wont go wrong with either. I'd find the 450D a bit small, and the 40D is better spec'd in many respects.

Anyone know what the maximum 1:1 file size is which the 450D puts out?
 
4272 x 2848, from a quick googling.

Yeah, sorry, swanseamale mentioned it in his post as a differing feature. I was pointing out they both have the same processor :)
 
In that case then Bodders, it puts out a bigger 1:1 file than the 40D too which could be quite significant to image quality.
