Hi all,

Ive been on this site for a few months now and i keep on stumbling across terms and meanings but always forget to ask what they mean. So i decided that i would create this thread so i, and others can stick words or phrases ect up and people can reply and to help me and some of the other new members out.

My things that i can remember at this moment are:

USM
Artifacts
(I've heard it used with sharpening lark)

If anybody can help me out with these and if people stick some more stuff up here it would be good.

USM = Un Sharpen Mask. Found under the "Filter" menu in photoshop and is used to sharpen images.:)

Artifacts - Dodgy looking pixels, usually seen after over-sharpening/resizing, (I think!) or more commonly from lower quality cameras. Someone will have a better explanation of this I'm sure!

Artifacts are also the result of compression. So JPGs – a compressed format – will always have artifacts. Little compression results in few (visible) artifacts. More compression results, of course, in more (visible) artifacts.
