No problem with virus etc.
I found Paint.Net easier to use and, with some good plug ins, very good.
There is probably more advice about The Gimp online though.

Gimp is a very powerful tool, but it was never designed to compete against photoshop, so you will find the interface very different. Gimp is currently at version 2.6.? and version 2.8 is in development. 2.8 is bringing in some radical changes to the gimp interface. With patience gimp will be a very usefull tool for you, help is available from various forums and the book Gronking the Gimp is available as a free download. As for viruses as long as you download from a safe site you will be ok.
