The General Drone-Related Thread

Ok just powered it on calibrated the compass but keeps flashing up firmware needs updating and also so does the battery?Any advice, can I just update the battery or will I need to do both?

If you can't get past that screen you might have to do it, but I haven't seen any update notice which can't be cancelled on mine yet.

Yeah can get past it just wondered if I'd be missing out on any benefits to updating firmware.

I'll have another look mate but getting stressed out lol

Think I'm going to plump for the Typhoon H, don't think I really need the more expensive Realsense one (and I believe it can be added later if I really wanted it), was quite tempted by some of the offers of the Phantom 4 of late but the Typhoon looks like a good bit of kit!

Another idiot with a drone.

A passenger plane landing at Newquay Airport with 62 people on board has narrowly missed colliding with a drone in the latest incident to spark concern about the gadgets.

Police launched an investigation after the incident on Wednesday afternoon and were appealing for information on the operator of the drone.

Inspector Dave Meredith said the plane was approaching the runway shortly before 3pm when the remotely piloted device approached.

The plane was at 900ft and was approximately two miles from the airport, just south of St Columb Major, when it reported a near miss with a drone which flew alongside the aircraft," he added.

Another rather mysterious 'sighting' at 900 feet and it "flew alongside"? :runaway:
Then nothing more seen of it or anyone flying it.
Complete with stock Phantom photo to imply anyone could own something capable of such amazing feats ...

I use the lowepro drone guard 450 AW

It's a big bag but carries my phantom 4, 7 batteries, I pad mini. All chargers and leads. Controller and I have a range extended antenna that's large. Plenty room left for more.

You probably want a backpack style one, I have one of these which appears to be a copy of DJIs own - or maybe it's the same with different sticker on.
Anyway it's been OK since about April.
Everything is quite snug and tight which is good but take care all is positioned correctly when you zip it up.
I don''t use the strap over the top as it could put pressure on the controller antennas.

Banggood are OK but allow two weeks - though some things are at European warehouse and come much faster.

Depending on how approximate that 2 miles is the drone may well have been in open airspace. In that case its both the pilot's and the drone operator's responsibility to avoid a collision then. But its yet another mysterious case of can't find the drone or the operator. But the operator is still a fool if they were flying it there.

Not withstanding, the same paper also carried a link to this article http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...t-car-crash-surveillance-safety-a7180576.html. Sadly the woman died in a car crash whilst been followed by police. She'd been behaving dubiously near Wandsworth prison first. Not sure how thats anything to do with a drone though

I thought drones weren't allowed to fly higher than 400 feet?

If it was a drone you ain't. I did say the operator was a fool. But it remains if the near miss was in open airspace it's both parties responsibility to avoid

Yeah seen this one on ebay at various prices, apparently there is a newer style with slightly better cut outs for the controller

But not as bulky as that hardshell back pack and not much dearer?

I use the Manfrotto one for my phantom setup. It carries everything I need for the drone plus my laptop, my camera, two lenses, filters and tripod. A really nice feature of it is that you can carry the Phantom with the props on. I think it was £140 or somewhere around there.

I actually used mine for first time since June - just a run from end of garden.
Need to get up among the heather ASAP.

Be interested to know your thoughts when it arrives as I still need one for mine.

No probs mate will get few snaps as well if I get time of the phantom in it.

Anyone know to any good deals on the phantom 3 4K? I'm looking to buy one before we go away to Bournemouth in a few weeks. Had posted a wanted on here but no luck so I think i'll have to buy new...

Are you set on the 4k model?

Not really, I'd only though to go with the 4K for better quality than the standard 1080 but I'm sure I'd find the 1080 perfectly acceptable.

Don't forget P3A can do 2K and has much more robust Lightbridge for longer range.
There is some evidence that the 4K camera actually performs best at the 2K setting.

I'll have a look into the p3a thanks! Very open to others to be honest.

Are you all using standard props? Or are the carbon fibres a worthy investment?

If you get the carbon (look) ones best try DJI's own.
I've had those on for about a year, to be honest the only real advantage is not showing bug guts like the white ones
They are considerably stiffer and would likely break in a more spectacular way if you hit anything hard.
Very little change in handling or noise, I fancy you can hear it further away if anything which you may or may not want.
They still need balancing ideally, like the standard ones.

There's a great sale on at Banggood at the moment, I have a Phantom 4 in my basket at the moment for £705.15 inc delivery but looking at the import duties online the charge works out at £166.00
