The General Drone-Related Thread

Anyone seen any drone footage from the VSCC hillclimb at Wiscombe park today (08/05/'16)? The organisers and spectators (and competitors) want to thank the operator for holding up proceedings for 20 minutes or so...

Latest update to DJI Go now means I have the ability to broadcast live over Facebook from my Inspire or Osmo.

Saw that, not sure how much use I'll make of it, that said I can think of a few times it will be useful certainly for professionals

One of my mates suggested I live stream one of the bullfights I'm going to next month as he can't go. I won't do that because the majority of my friends wouldn't appreciate it. However, it got me thinking, what will sports rights-holders do if people start streaming live matches using their Osmo X5? I mention the X5 because of the ability to attach a longer reaching lens.

Well people like DATACO will likely modify their terms and so will all the others I'm sure...most tickets to sporting events will already have terms to cover against this type of thing

But the scofflaws who are likely to be operating illegally by flying over the stadia probably won't be ticket holders so won't be restricted by THOSE T&Cs. Much like the appendage who was flying over Wiscombe Park a couple of weekends ago.

I've dabbled in alternative apps previously, but there are usually various niggles and ended up mainly using the DJI one.
Litchi requires additional fees for some of the features which is not perhaps made as clear as it should be.
It's all about pre-programming routes and semi-automated manoeuvres which it does undoubtedly do better than DJIgo app if you want that sort of thing.
Usually I'd much rather have it in my control and within visual range.
GoApp can do circling a point of interest which is the only automated move I sometimes use.

Thanks 4wd. Didn't realise that Litchi required additional fees

Just came back from a visit to the Mach Loop & still can't believe I saw this....

Nothing came through the Loop on that day but if something had ....

Can anyone recommend some good drone retailers? Beyond WEX there seems a lot of choice and I'm not sure where best to look!
Been tempted for a while and with the likelihood that price rises are going to bit on most electronic goods in the next month I might as well pull the trigger now!

Buzzflyer have been quite helpful with me e.g. when a battery failed, quite competitive too.
Look out for extras included.
You will need at least two batteries and a backpack style case for sure.

RCGeeks. Firstpersonview. Hobbymounts. All are excellent.

Just about to bite the bullet on a phantom 3 advanced but rc geeks have no stock. Was going to buy direct from dji but will take 5 days to arrive!..Seen first person view mentioned a few times on this thread are they any good?

I bought one of my Inspires from them, very smooth and speedy purchase.

Just spoke to them on the phone to see if they had stock and they do so will be ordering an advanced later today and spare battery..

Arrived today
Don't feel obliged to update firmware, ignore the nag screen.
The process is lengthy and not without pitfalls until you are more familiar with it.
It should fly just fine out of the box and the constant firmware updates often do not have obvious benefit to the average user.

Thats a very high end setup he's got there, therefore i doubt he would be flying without relevant permissions. it's not kit that an untrained amateur would use.

Thanks mate what does firmware update bring to the table?

Possible bricking! (Check out Matt's tale of woe with his after a firmware update...) @MWHCVT

I see his issues were back in april..surely the firmware they are asking you to update to now is free of issues?...So far charged my batteries downloaded the app anything I should do to make this as smooth as possible?

Ah yes it went off for repair, and came back with no fault found but still was exactly the same..

However come the next update things worked as expected again for the most part, truth be told though not flown in months thanks to hospital and then recovery, hope to get some flying in over the next month or two though before winter kicks in and the bird gets hangered for winter again lol

My only flying recently was as a favour to the village church to make sure they didn't have birds nesting in gutters, was an experience to do something that was purposeful rather than purely self gratifying if the purpose and resulting footage was frankly boring

From the app calibrate the IMU whether it says needed or not - this is done beforehand with it set on a level surface.
In an open area do the Compass calibration (turning 360 in both axis).
Some will suggest doing this before every flight but there's no need once you have a good calibration for your area (like UK).
It's better to have a quick look at the sensor readings via the app rather than calibrating for the sake of it.
In any case if something has upset it like being near large metal object or magnet the app will tell you.

The auto take-off is a bit wimpy and only goes 2 or 3 feet off the ground - not always enough if there's any wind.
You are better doing it manually. Start motors and give it full throttle up to about 15 feet then let it settle before doing further gentle inputs.
Don't be tempted to do first flight in your back garden or other 'tight' area.
It is way too easy to get a bit dis-orientated after turning and hit something.
You want a large open area to start with.
Get up pretty high above any nearby trees and get the feel of 'driving about' using gentle yaw to steer while going forward, then move on to more complicated stuff like circles and arcs while simultaneously yawing very gently to keep camera pointing inwards.

When you come in to land do not stop the motors using the CSC like when starting - it will often tip over.
Just hold the left stick down and after 3 seconds the motors stop. This can't happen in the air as it has to sense the lack of further descent too
Hand catching is usually best option when done properly, though check out videos on doing it safely above your head.
Landing on the ground it can easily bump gimbal or tip over - and it throws up dust or drops of water can get on motors or camera.

A surprising number of people don't remove all packaging and the gimbal guard before turning it on.
This is important as it goes through a little dance to self level and any resistance is bad for the gimbal motors.

Firmware: They are constantly issuing minor updates.
The only ones worth getting were months ago - for more flight options like POI and an update for batteries which reduced sudden drop syndrome in cold weather.
One bought now will surely have this already.

The main problem areas are compatibility between firmware on the controller and Phantom. If not done in the correct sequence it can be panic stations with no link between them.
It will work just fine out of the box initially and I would advise ignore the update messages for at least a couple of weeks.
There's nothing wrong with the latest firmware, but it will be important to update everything once you start, and it could be a rather nerve wracking lengthy process.

Lots of help on phantompilots.com

Could you elaborate mate?

Sorry, Stuart, I couldn't remember exactly what his issues had been, just that they coincided with a firmware update. That's why I tagged him in - he's a helpful chap and I was fairly sure he'd pop along and tell you more!

I see that 4wd has given you some handy tips for the maiden flights and gentle self instruction as well.

Thanks for helpful advice much appreciated both. I had a phantom before so familiar with flying them. So best to calibrate imu before the compass? Is this in settings on the app

I'm thinking about going for a Phantom 3Pro/4 or Typhoon H.

My plan will using it when out doing landscapes, most likely overnighters and multi-day trips which lead me to my question. I intend to get a 75/110AH leisure battery and 1000W PURE Sine inverter housed in a secure box to keep in the car boot but reading about these LiPo batteries makes me question the safety and reliabilty of charging like this.

Do any of you guys take your drones away from mains power for upto a week, what solutions do you have to keep the batteries in good shape if away?

You'll want two or three batteries if not more anyway, which would get you a fair bit of footage without recharging.
I don't think there's anything to worry about considering the voltage is filtered through what is basically a power supply because all the smart charging side is handled by the battery circuitry.
You can get 12V chargers which is probably a sensible solution, but I use an inexpensive 300w inverter like this from time to time

Cheers @4wd

Yeah at least two batteries for out in the field then I can charge up back at the car or onwards to next location!

Do you need to calibrate the IMU if you dont update the firmware?
