The General Drone-Related Thread

Sunnyhurst Hey and Earnsdale Reservoirs are adjacent reservoirs situated on the north-western edge of Darwen Moor, some 1.5 km west of Darwen town centre. Earnsdale Reservoir was constructed in 1863 and impounds 433Ml with a 300 m long, 24 m high embankment.. The site is used by the Darwen Anglers Association. The reservoir offers excellent bank fishing, close to Sunnyhurst wood, which is a beautiful 85 acer wooded valley and is a beautiful location for family walks and picnics.

Just to say, beware of birds - it can end badly, though this time, I was just far enough away to avoid them! :runaway:

Whalley Abbey, A Cistercian Monastery.

Whalley Abbey is a ruinous 13th-century Cistercian abbey on the banks of the River Calder in the peaceful Ribble Valley in Lancashire. Whalley Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey which after the dissolution of the monasteries, was largely demolished and a country house was built on the site.

Whalley Abbey was the second richest of Lancashire's monasteries, founded in 1296, when the Cistercian monks of Stanlaw moved there from their flood-prone site on the Cheshire shore of the River Mersey near Ellesmere Port.

The Gregorian chant you are listening to is sung by the Cistercian Monks Of Stift Heiligenkreuz - the Cistercian Chant Responsories of Matins for the Feast of St Bernard : Testamentum Eternum.

Excellent, you’re getting good at this aren’t you! :)

Cuerden Valley Park lies between Bamber Bridge and Clayton Green. It has 650 acres of parkland, wildflower meadows, mixed woodland, the meandering River Lostock with stepping stones and a ford, oxbow ponds, a lake, a picnic area, ten miles of paths!

MIL lived just up the road, only way of escaping her :-)

I was out with my Mini3 this morning and it attracted the attention of a buzzard or something very similar. I took the drone straight up and then at height back toward me. By that time the bird had given up, thankfully :)

Anyone else had that?

Gulls are a nightmare so if you get those, fly away!

This is Downham Village in Lancashire, on a very blustery day today (March 22nd) - you can see the flowers and even clothing on washing lines being harried by the wind - where the famous movie "Whistle Down The Wind" was for the most part set in.

Film Synopsis: When an injured wife murderer takes refuge on a remote Lancashire farm, the owner's three children mistakenly believe him to be the Second Coming of Christ.

Malcolm Arnold: Whistle Down the Wind (1961) Main Theme. [Norrie Paramor-Midland Radio Orchestra].

Really good use of it as stable video camera which often doesn't look like drone.

Wycoller Beck & The Ruins of Wycoller Hall (Jane Eyre)

The beck runs through the village of Wycoller, meandering past Wycoller Hall, a late sixteenth-century manor house.

Today Wycoller Hall stands in ruins but this 16th century hall is believed to have been the inspiration for Ferndean Manor in Charlotte Bronte’s novel, ‘Jane Eyre’.

The beck is crossed by no less than seven bridges, the oldest of which is Clam Bridge, more than 1000 years old, and the bridge is listed as an Ancient Monument.

Finds of flint tools and axe heads at Wycoller indicate that there was a community here from as early as the Stone Age.

Roach Bridge Mill was built in 1784 as a cotton spinning mill. In November 1801 much of the mill was damaged by fire, resulting in hard times and the owner, John Watson, eventually spending time in Lancaster's debtors' prison. Until 2001 the site was used for the manufacture and printing of specialist tissue paper. The family structure held the majority of shares with management holding a minority interest. Unfortunately, trading conditions and increased regulation caused major problems, trading had to cease and the company was placed in administration. Tissue conversion has re-started at Roach Bridge in some of the more modern buildings, while some of the older buildings have been demolished.

Hoghton Bottoms through the Hoghton Tower Viaduct.

This is a spectacular section of the River Darwen, where a picturesque sandstone gorge leads to a tumbling weir and the 108-foot (33 m) high Hoghton Bottoms Viaduct towers above. The weir sits at the top of the sandstone gorge - the only feature of its type in the Ribble Catchment - and it is crossed by the Hoghton Tower Viaduct. The weir is a famous local landmark and is easily accessible thanks to a public footpath running alongside the river.

DJI have introduced a "Tripod Mode" speed for the Mini 3 Pro.

In the latest update to their firmware, you can now set the maximum speed horizontally (and vertically) to as low as 1 metre a second.

This short video was filmed entirely with the joystick full forward throughout the journey. Music is "Watermark" by Enya.

I’ve finally got around to using the DJI mini drone I got from here around 2 years ago!

It wasnt as difficult as I thought it would be. N my first flight I had to contend with a paraglider who had jumped off one of the surrounding mountains.

This is a portrait crop from a landscape photo.

I need to get out with it more as it gives a different point of view. The jpeg stills from the mini aren’t as good as the video, but it gives a chance to practice with it before considering an upgrade once the new certified drones are out.

Great fun aren't they? I go out with mine almost everyday :)

Can't you shoot in RAW?

So addictive they are...

I just wish they (the CAA) could sort out the class marking system. I would buy a Mavic 3 Classic if I knew I could take advantage of the C1 class in the UK.

It’s a DJI mini (1) so jpeg only. I think raw format came with the mini 2.

Once they sort out the classification it will likely be time for me to upgrade.

Jubilee Tower, Quernmore, near Lancaster

James Harrison, to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, did two things. In a fit of patriotism he lit a beacon on nearby Clougha Pike on the date of the Jubilee, and his second deed was rather more enduring - he commissioned a local mason to build a folly view tower.

This was built to be a viewing tower, and here is some of what can be seen: Face out to sea and look at the great views of Lancaster close by, with Heysham and its power station beyond. To the right, looking north on a clear day shows the Lake District and it’s southern mountains. Behind is Hare Appletree Fell and a path up to Clougha Pike. The road to the left will take you to the Trough of Bowland, a fantastic drive through this designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The Tower is a plain stone structure 3.87 metres square and 4.5 metres high with a stone staircase up to the flat top, which is surrounded by a crenellated wall. There are no doors or windows in the outer walls.

Glasson Dock.

A popular destination for tourist, many on motorbikes, the village of Glasson has a small selection of shops and places to eat, and there are excellent walks in the surrounding countryside. The harbour at Glasson originally opened in 1787, following the demise of Lancaster as a port, and was at its height the largest port in the north west, importing cotton, sugar, spices and slaves from Africa and the Indies.

Glasson is still a thriving port handling over 150,000 tonnes of cargo annually. Glasson Waterside & Marina lies in a secure and well sheltered location at Glasson.

Glasson Dock is a useful stopping-off point for yachts on their way from the South Coast to Scotland or vice versa. Within easy reach of the Isle of Man and Ireland, it makes an excellent base for exploring the beautiful countryside of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. The Basin, which forms the beginning of Lancaster Canal, is entered via a lock from the River Lune. It is in a rural setting but within easy reach of many pubs and restaurants.

Abbeystead Weir is in the Forest Of Bowland AONB, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

A remarkable, large, curved basin like structure allows water to flow from the reservoir down an stone-lined channel to a high weir and into the River Wyre below. The beautifully curved weir we see today was originally constructed in 1878 and finished construction in 1881. The dam was designed by a James Mansergh who after the completion of Abbeystead designed the reservoirs at Elan Valley.

Tragically, the quiet village of Abbeystead hit the headlines in 1984 when a disastrous explosion at a pumping station which was being visited by residents from the nearby St Michaels on Wyre. Of those 44 visitors, 16 lost their lives, and many of the others were seriously hurt or burned by escaping methane gas. Today, the village is wonderfully peaceful, with only a commemorative plaque to allude to that terrible day.

I’m curious to know if my drone would land back close to me if it was foggy? If I just went straight up, and then straight down again, would it return to the same spot?

In theory it should do. The TOAL are GPS based so I would expect the RTH would come through fog (or cloud cover).

What software do you use to edit and create your drone footage, Paul?

Everything works at night. Although we did shine a torch on the ground in the hope it would help the sensors.

Yes, it would, provided that the Home Point was successfully acquired on take off.

I have had mine get confused by fog thinking it was too close to the ground and didn't want to come down and worse kept going up but was easy enough to over ride that with controller..
Not ideal anyway apart from being hard to see where it is it will come back wringing wet with moisture on lens so no good pictures or video anyway.
I have sent mine above shallow fog to do a timelapse which was good as the fog washes too and fro like waves on a beach
