The General Drone-Related Thread

I did the same yesterday 4wd. Was gutted when I got home but the jpegs were still decent. I'm just editing a lil flight around castle coch in Wales and I'll share with you guys.

Must have been a challenge flying there legally.

From what I read there was an agreement that let Apple sell a new model first, nothing more.

Thanks for the concern. However I was more than 50metres away from the castle. And was on the local golf course flying.

Guessing you've never flown somewhere illegally?

I have flown somewhere illegally and wasn't suggesting otherwise.

This really annoys me when people invade golf courses, often they don't wear golf shoes or show any concern for the state of the green, or show any concern for the members. I can't believe any Captain would allow this ?

Might have been from the car park. Who knows!

Invade?? You've been awfully argumentative the last few days.@Blank_Canvas theres no need for it.

It was from the carpark I also popped into the clubhouse and asked them first.

Anyways first flight with my Phantom 4 Pro.

Technically over the slip road and as you see I brought it back away from there immediately. What exactly is your issue? You've questioned the legality of what I done and also now criticising the area in which I flew.
You must be a really fun guy to hang out with

Actually if you look again, you will see you flew directly over the A470 whether you want to admit it or not. My issue? I already raised it. Flying over those kinds of public roads is a hugely dangerous.

Watch out lads. Drone police is here.
Like I said I seen my errors and I moved back away. Not really sure why your raising an issue, you don't know my skill level at flying drones yet seem hell bent on acting up about a few seconds where I wondered off course a little.

Care to share any of your own videos so i can criticise them?

so petty.

Sure, fill your boots. Link.

I'm getting fed up with drone flyers at our Gulf club. Indeed, York has seen an influx of illegal flying. One is even reported to have hit York Minster last year. So you may understand my apparent annoyance.

You've flown directly over buildings and public footpaths with people walking on. Yet I'm the bad guy. OK.
We may aswell draw a line under this. I'm sorry my video upset you. Perhaps you would like to ignore future posts from me to avoid this happening again.

A different approach would have been to inform me of my mistake and given me some advice to avoid it in future.

However thanks for your input I shall certainly take it on board during my next flight.

I have indeed made some questionable decisions in the past, and admitted it above. However, knowing these things can and do fall out of the sky, I would recommend never flying over a busy road.
I don't paint myself out to be whiter than white.

As for your video, it's your first effort so with every flight you will become more proficient. There's a lot of movement going on there that is distracting. A good starting point would have been doing a POI auto flight around a point not too far from the castle, which would have given you a smooth, jerk-free arc around the place. Enjoy your drone!

No. I have never flown a drone in my life. I don't even own one. But it is something I am considering. I've come on here to learn about the subject. what puts me off is the very bad publicity that drive flyers are receiving at the moment. For what it's worth I did actually enjoy your video.

He was referring to me.

Thanks for the advice. I've never had drones with automatic camera features before. However I've flown them for a few years including drones without gps assistance so my flying skills are decent it's just the smoothness I'm struggling with.

I'll do some research into the POI mode and give it a try next time.

Must admit your videos are silky smooth and I was just being petty. Sorry [emoji52]

Off topic. Which osmo do you have. Been contemplating one for awhile.

No problem. I just have the basic Osmo (the one that has the X3 camera on it). It's a clever piece of kit!

I find Mavic seems easier than phantoms to do an arc smoothly while facing inwards which is a crucial video move.
Jut remember both sticks in or both sticks out and rest your hand on the controller which helps apply constant pressure.
Trouble with the POI you have to hover over the centre point first which you don't always want to do e.g. that castle!
- and it all takes a while to set up.
Often you only want an arc round the front rather than record where they put the bins or something at the back.
I slowed the gimbal right down to 8 yes 8 - it's much better for cinematic style though too slow if you were chasing the dog or something.

Which is why I said "POI auto flight around a point not too far from the castle".

I still don't have a date for my Mavic delivery!

Nick, I can understand anyone getting annoyed if they are being disturbed from doing something, but can I ask (as someone who has no particular interest in drones & isn't pro or anti them) where can they be flown where there isn't anyone around to be annoyed?

Me neither but at least you now know it should be with you before the 18th Jan because current orders are being sent out before then. I've only ordered mine a week ago so hopefully looking to get mine before the 18th!

I don't know, I think this is an emerging problem and one thing that is potentially putting me off getting one. You will always be on somebody's land without permission it's a civil trespass.councils are clamping down from use in public places. Compulsory CAA training and licensing is also being discussed. One thing for certain is it won't be getting easier.

You don't need any land owners permission unless you're physically standing on their land. As long as you're flying within the guidelines and obtain permission from the CAA where required then you can fly the drone anywhere you like when it meets the legal requirements i.e. not in a built up area such as towns or within a certain limit of people and buildings. Also Scotland are no longer in the EU (well you know what I mean) so any laws being introduced for the EU hopefully won't apply. EDIT: That's where I'm from ;)

I personally think licensing etc is idiotic. RC aircraft have been around for years and never had a problem. It's the idiots who buy them for idiots and they mess it up for other folk.

There are only places you can fly it. In a public place, which councils are clamping down on or on private land which requires permission.

Don't worry too much about it?

Veer away from people on the ground?

Just use a bit of common sense I'd have thought. It's impossible to police really.

What are you supposed to do you do if a cyclist, or people walk within the 50mts?

Like many things, I guess there is a question of reasonability. Yes a cyclist could come within distance but if you've taken reasonable precautions then use a bit of common

Various forces doing a trial with a 'drone catcher' at the moment !

All the more reason not to be a t*** and fly safely in a suitable area.

I'd love one but don't think it's worth the hassle.

I had one hovering over my back garden last summer.

Soon shot off when I pointed my air rifle at it.
