The Formula 1 Thread

Hamilton is the best thing to happen to F1 since Senna..... qualify by he's a racer.

Yes he has an ego, yes he feels it's his right to win, yes he wants to be the greatest, yes he makes mistakes.

Bloody exciting though. I remember Sennas first GP and saying that he was either going to be the greatest or kill himself trying. He probably would have been had I not unfortunately been right about the second thing.

Fortunately these days the cars are that much safer.....dosen't excuse Hamiltons lairy driving but let's face it........he's the only one who will get near Vettel this year.:clap:
As Lewis said: People moan about there being no overtaking. When he tries he gets penalised.

The move on Massa was ambitious, but Massa is at much at fault as he turned in on him. Should of been classed as a racing incident.

Just found this thread - thanks for starting it Dave...

Have to add my own feelings of total incredulity when MB/DC mentioned that tyre changes would be allowed during the red flag period - initially I think they were
unsure/disbelieving of the rules until receiving confirmation from the mechanics/grid.
Doesn't make any sense so can only assume a rare event (?) that hasn't been really tested/challenged in the past..

Showing my age now. I've been following F1 since the early sixties:)

The race on Sunday was shaping up to be one of the most explosive finales of the last several seasons, almost comparable to the Mansell Piquet chase after the tyre problem at Silverstone in 1987.

I was working on the corner he ran out of fuel at on the slowing down lap and had to help
Mansell into the Rescue Unit to protect him from the fans.

Yes I realised after I wrote that :bonk:

But look how far Vettel went on one set of tyres, so throw in no pit stops and only one set of tyres and you are then down to who can make them last the longest. Sets it up for some great end of race finishes.

Spike

Problem with that is, if everyone had 1 set of tyres, everyone's tyres would be ruined by the end of the race :D

I think what Pirelli done with tyres is great.. It creates lots of opportunities with passing. On the other hand, it is sometimes just too easy...

Other drivers managed(except DiResta!!) to pass without crashing though, Hamilton just wasn't patient enough IMHO

+1... there were plenty of other passes.. it's a narrow track, you can't just dive in at every opportunity and expect others to get out of your way. There is just not enough room to do that.

Overall, i think it was a great race, spoilt by the red flag. Vettel deserved the win though. He drove almost 60 laps on 1 set of tyres. And as he said in the interviews, worst he could have done was 3rd place if the race continued without safety car or red flag. So a mistake at the pit stop proved to be a great strategy.

I think the other teams are catching up to red bull quickly. Last 2 race showed this. So despite Vettel's big lead, it's far from over. If Hamilton can keep his cool and drive properly, he has the chance to win next few races...

We are big f1 fans in our house, my OH is a big Hamilton supporter and I am a button fan.

Hamilton really screwed up at Monaco IMO, he let's his heart rule his head too much.

I like di resta too, hope he does well in the future.

Looks as if we get even more to be thankful for next season :)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/sport2/hi/formula_one/13647582.stm

21 race calandar is far too much, even 20 is pushing it too much, the teams personel already spend far too much time out of the year away, remember that for each race the team are away for about a week, this leaves very little time to actually prep the cars and for them to see their families!

and as far bahrain, i hope the teams boycott it. the very fact they are going shows that the FIA doesnt give a ferk about anything but money.

mark webber has posted on his blog about going there, interesting read.

Some good points, the world is certainly a changing place from the old days of 'we're just sports men and we go do our sports thing' :)

Is anyone seeing Senna when it comes out on Friday? I'm trying to find a Scottish cinema that's showing it but none seem to be :(
I've just come back from watching it Julie. If you get the slightest chance to go and see it. Then do. Well worth watching.
A very thought provoking documentary.
One thing for sure. Schumacher would not have been seven time World Champ if Ayrton had survived. (But then that's another argument)

Can't wait to see it, makes me truly sad to think of Senna's death. They showed the accident again on the Murray Walker documentary on BBC2 t'other night and it's still hard to believe seeing it even now....what a smash though! :(

What stands out about this season? The fact that despite a stranglehold by one driver/car combo, everyone is enjoying the racing, enjoying the spectacle again and politics aside, that looks set to continue throughout the year, f1 finally started getting it right again. ;)

Bahrain - it won't happen this season, I just don't see it.

Senna Movie - no desire to go and see it, but will probably grab a copy when it comes out on DVD, but I just can't see my way to idolising him the way many do, he had as many flaws as Schumacher, some would say more. That is just my opinion though and I take nothing away from his acheivements, his fans or what might have been. :)

So, Canada, predictions? No points for anyone predicting a vettel win btw :p

Canada prediction - Hamilton win, button 2nd, schumi 3rd,

Vettel and Webber retire with mechanical problems!

I can dream can't I?

Can't wait for it - won't see quali though as I'm at a wedding in York, think I will get in trouble if I'm checking my phone through the speeches.

As long as you are not the Groom, Best Man or Father of the Bride you should live:)

Interesting point you make about comparing Senna and Schumacher.

Having been fortunate enough to spend time with both, their private personas away from the cameras were very similar as well. Both were thoroughly pleasant and very amusing to be with. Their lives in the car or in front of the cameras were/are very much a character they played out for the media/fans.

In what way did you spend time with them? That must have been really something!!

Predictions for Sun: 1st Button, 2nd Webber, 3rd Rosberg (I'm definitely dreaming on that one!!). Vettel, Hamilton, Webber much more likely!!!

I used to hold a RACMSA Race Rescue Operator licence. We crewed the "Rescue Units" you see at meetings.

F1 Requirements stipulated a Rescue Unit at private test days as they used to run.

I went to Pembrey many times for testing and we would be able to chat to the drivers when the engineers were messing with the cars. As I said before away from the cameras they were completely different.

Senna would read our copies of Motoring News and AutoSport. He even asked us to look after his girlfriend as she found it all a bit boring. Difficult to say yes to that:) 4 men and a doctor with a beautiful young girl!!

I remember one test with Eddie Irvine in I think the Jordan.

He got bored so went out in his road car to set a time. Then fuelled it up with Racing fuel to see what happened. He went quicker but his Mercedes sounded somewhat rough on his return.

Wow, that is very cool!!

Predictions for Sun: 1st Vettel 2nd Alonso 3rd Webber

Difficult to see past Red Bull at present, I think the Ferraris will be getting stronger as well...

Let's hope Lewis is Lewis this weekend and not pretending to be Ali G!

alonso is quick in FP, lots of crashes today too. Perez is out, so De La Rosa is driving in his place.

Lewis n button to sort it out this weekend I feel. Two drs zones I think n mclaren will be flying ..... I hope anyway. Just no vettel on pole or first.

Yawn! Well unless it rains in Canada tomorrow:shake:

I think McLaren need to find a new strategist - Ron would never have stood for this shower:bang:

Just found this thread - agree with the comments about the race being ruined by letting the teams change tyres after the red flag. Hoping we will see the Red Bulls beaten in tomorrow's race, if not by a McLaren, then by a Ferrari, or the championship will be over before we're 2/3s through.

Don't know if it's been mentioned before, but there's now an F1 app for smartphones on the Formula 1 website, which shows live timings for practice, qualifying and the race. Gives you more information than what you see on TV, though it did freeze for a few minutes during today's qualifying:

So who is naturally superstitious and believes in omens and stuff?

LeMans - 2 [atm] :(
Silverstone - 1 :(

Canada - how many in champions wall tomorrow? :|

well Kobayashi is practically guaranteed to end up in a wall at some point tomorrow, he was mad in qualifying, oposite lock, hard on the gas leaving black skiddies towards the wall of champions, keep it pinned!

I'm hoping for rain!

The rumour is that McLaren have gambled on more of a wet set-up, which would explain their poor quali.

I think that's f1 speak for - 'oh dear guys - we've seriously dropped the ball here'

Hamiltons original comments after qualifying were changed ..... again:gag:

Hopefully Alonso continues his excellent launching form later today, would stop Vettel from time trialling to first place for 2 hours.

i've already heard the german national anthem today on the LM coverage, dont want to hear it again, ill take a win from anyone else today, bored of vettel domination now.

Looks like this could be an interesting race with the weather, I'm getting comfy and going to watch it now & I expect carnage

That was fantastic! Having not watched f1 for years, I'm back and hooked after that race... Drs.... What a great idea!

Great race and a great drive from Jenson...brilliant!
