Do we have an F1 thread.

I can't seem to see much of a thread on here, surely there must be some F1 fans out there in TP land :)

I was wondering what the reaction was to Vettel's fortunate victory today in Monte Carlo, and of Hamilton's current form - he seems to be cracking somewhat doesn't he?

Canada next up, can Red Bull carry on their blistering form?!
 
Loved the race right up to sutil crashing. Ruined a very very tight finish that would have been a thriller. Redbull will
Make the season over by mid point, which is a shame. Pulling the blown exhaust throttle thing will help but that isn't going until the British GP, which will be too late.

Hamilton needs to grow up. Poor drive from him.
 
Yeah, it was certainly shaping up as a bit of a thriller wasn't it... We can only hope Red Bull drop the ball a bit, but agree can't see it happening at present.
 
Yep thanks Lewis you numpty... now i know a guy or 2 on here who are sure they will be along soon.
 
Not really a fan of F1 more a fan of MotoGP but todays race was the best I have seen in a long long time, shame the saftey car came out as itr was all about tyres.

Now just imagine if they made F1 use one tank of fuel and one set of tyres you would get that excitment in every race, same as GP, who can make their tyres last till the end of the race, and win, no pit stops for fresh tyres, no pitstops to adjust wings if you got it slightly wrong.

Seriously though, todays Monaco race was the best race from there in years, probably the best of Monte Carlo I have seen in 17 yrs of trying to ignore the sport ;) However, I cannot begin to put into words how seriously fed up I was that the 'you can rebuild your car if race red flagged' rule spoiled what could have been an absolute storming end to the race! As 'Tiffany Dell' said on twitter - brilliant and exciting, then they shoot themselves in the foot with a rule![or words to that effect] :bang: :bang:


as for Lewis....hmm.... yes, stroppy and childish, but a small part of me can't help but think of the number of times I have rued the passing of drivers like Irvine and Villeneuve and totally abhor the PR machine that makes modern f1 so stupidly clinical.
 
Haha, yeah vous :) I'm surprised we haven't already got a good thriving thread up and running given the interest in motorsport on here ;)

Ah well, we have a voice now.

Really annoying as they did drop the ball with the first pit stop but still had great fortune with teh safety car to come in first :(

Agree totally, great race especially for Monaco!! But could not believe the rebuild on the track. Can understand blowers to stop the cars from blowing up and keeping tyres warm but thats about it. spoilt a great race!
 
Hamilton is a very good racer but his passes yesterday were very hamfisted(no pun intended)

They do only use one tank of fuel.
Button was robbed yesterday, he was waiting to pounce in my opinion he just needed a gap between Alonso and Vettel to be able to make a move and slot in. Then he could take Vettel too.

But there is no other way on that track, his first pass was awesome, but the others just needed the participation of the others drivers....which tbh is never going to happen.

Also noticed a lot of blue flags being waved at cars that were fighting for position, can imagine that is insanely off putting when trying to drive and follow the rules/flags.
 
Normally he is awesome at passing, the pass on massa was just a lunge, hoping massa would see him but it was never going to happen, likewise maldanado, he just went for a gap that wasn't ever there. The way he passed schuey(or for that matter, the way schuey passed him) were excellent examples of how to do it. Fact is that he was desperate to get passed and didn't apply his usual skills. Montoya would have been proud!

I agree, Hamilton was making clean overtaking moves on the track at the hairpin before the apex, only to be dragged/forced over the white line and onto the kerbs by the other car/driver.
 
The Massa move was just unlucky, Massa went for an odd line slightly up the inside of Webber (iirc) and completely closed off the spot Hamilton was going for....I am guessing the lap(s) before Massa was possibly taking a wide line giving Lewis the idea he could stick it in there.

Has anyone seen the video of how Hamilton got up the inside of Massa into the tunnel yet? they didn't seem to show it on the live coverage.

Yes I realised after I wrote that :bonk:

But look how far Vettel went on one set of tyres, so throw in no pit stops and only one set of tyres and you are then down to who can make them last the longest. Sets it up for some great end of race finishes.

All the commentators where waiting for that to happen to make it a great race to see if he could hold on to his lead.

As for the rule of repairing your car on the grid is stupid, spoils it for the fans who pay masses of money to watch a good rece only to see a guy that took his chances and thought he could finish on old tyres be able to have a complimentry pit stop,(well grid stop, you know what I mean) fresh tyres and win.

The problem with F1 is that at tracks like Monaco it is all about qualifying as there just isn't the room to pass, which is why I find Moto GP far more entertaining. In my opinion, Hamilton is a real racer, he (generally) overtakes where others can't and is so competitive. We need more people like him in the sport to bring it back to how it should be.

I watched the interview on the the BBC 1 f1 page with Lewis yesterday and to be honest he was a bit angry.

Good race thou was a total farce at the the end with the red flag conditions. Just mad the last 6 laps or so boring at the front.

If it was left as when they stopped would of made probably one of the best finishes to a race for a long time IMO.

It does seem that the Redbull has great pace in qualifying and cant be touched really. But the race pace is good but not entirely the same as practise. If the other teams could captialise on this would make it far more interesting.

Depends on what you mean buy repairs. The damage to Hamilton's rear wing was in no way his own fault. Had the race not been stopped, it was likely he would have been black flagged. I agree about the tyre changes though, that certainly shouldn't have been allowed to happen.
 
Other drivers managed(except DiResta!!) to pass without crashing though, Hamilton just wasn't patient enough IMHO
 
At the end of last season I was pretty fed up with F1 - the idea that it was a RACING series was getting stretched to the limit. This season, however, has got me rivetted to the tv again - great stuff! The rule changes, new tyres, reintroduction of KERS and the new DRS has completely transformed the sporting spectacle.

I'm really looking forward to the remainder of the season and wondering if/when Red Bull will drop the ball. If they don't then I can see Vettel being champion again with another record to his name ... namely most wins in a season :clap:

Another great race from an a great and exciting F1 season with plenty of on-track action, it's just a pity Vettel is running away with it and the title chase isn't closer. A superb drive from Button who was very unlucky with the safety cars taking his lead, but at Monaco the safety car is a high probability. Jenson handled his disappointment with dignity though.

The laps where Vettel, Alonso and Button were running together were so exciting with Alonso getting closer to getting through but also closer to his rears going off. I can't imagine either Vettel or Alonso could have survived on those tyres and would have settled for 2nd and 3rd with Button getting the victory. I was literally on the edge of my seat this point...then the safety car, the red flag and the fresh tyres...or a get out of jail free card for Vettel.

Hamilton's comments after the race were disappointing and a growing trend from him, he's becoming a bit of a whinger. I don't have a problem with his moves on the track, in fact it's great to see drivers having a go and it was incredible seeing him tucked under the gearbox of different cars for so many laps.
 
Agree about doing changes to the cars on the grid after the race was stopped.

Teams and drivers assess how they want to run the race. They balance the time advantage of not pitting against the condition of the tyres; this was ruined by what was a pit stop for no penalty.

It may have been unlikely that Alsono or Button could have made a move in the few remaining laps if tyre changes had not been made, but it would have produced a better end to the race. With new tyres it was fairly pointless running those last few laps.

Monaco is a spectacular setting and the in car camera views going up the hill and a few other areas are excellent, but often the race itself is a bit dull, so it was good to see a a more interesting one.

You don't win races by waiting though. The amount of time I have been watching Button sitting back and waiting and finishing 3rd or whatever.
 
I am amazed that nothing has been brought up anywhere about Adrian Sutil, he broke his suspension at tabac and then left the road at swimming pool 1, he then rejoined which caused hamilton to brake to avoid him, one of the toro rossos to hit him and petov had no where to go, sutil should have parked the car on the inside and waited for the road to be clear before continuing to the pits, this is what robbed us of the finish we all wanted and im suprised that very little has been said.


Hamilton did what he always does, he makes those controversial moves which if he pulls them off we hail them as amazing and if he doesnt we bemoan how iratic he can be.


and the least said about his post race comments the better.

I have to agree about the red flag rules, i always thought that the only thing the teams were allowed to do in such situations was keep the car race ready so plug in the cmputers and coolant systems etc. changing tyres is just rediculous and wrecked what could have been a stunning finish.


on a different note.... did anyone watch the Indy500? now that did have a stunning finish. the leader on the last lap got up high and hit the wall on the last turn, allowing Dan Wheldon (UK!) to sneak through for the win, hildebrand still managed to drag his three wheeled car to second place though!

Had the race not been stopped Hamilton would have had to have pulled in or been black flagged anyways, so he woud have dipped out, it was a racing incedent and had the race carried on and not being stopped it would have been classed as that, there was new front wings being put on another car. Wether it was his fault or not it stilll got repaired so he could finish the race and score points towards his total, where as in the race that would not have happend.

when a car pulls into the pits for say tyre change they have seconds to do stuff to the car or loose vital time/positions. sitting on the grid for 20 mins or so with 6 laps left whos to say they did not go all out down force or what ever knowing they could put the most radical changes possible and not wear new fresh tyres out in 6 laps. to see if they could have picked up a place or two.
All it did was hand a win and I mean hand it to him, to guy that was taking one big gamble to win the race in the first place.
No dount the rules will be changed again soon about this. Seems like the whole affair was one big farce and spoilt a good race.

It looks like Pirelli have requested a rule change regarding the changing of tyres on a red flag restart.
 
I think this season has been the most exciting in years despite the tight grip Vettel seems to have on the championship.

I'm a massive fan of Hamilton's driving style but the guy has a real attitude problem and an ego the size of mount Everest. His move on the hairpin was nothing more than a game of chicken and he hoped Massa would blink first - you cannot safely overtake by running on the inside of such a tight turn. I know others did but again it was purely down to other drivers blinking and giving way.

I get a sense that he feels entitled to race wins and that Vettel is somehow taking the path he should have had. He definitely sees himself going down in history as the greatest F1 driver but right now Vettel is laying the foundation for that, racking up those records.
 
The stewards seemed to think he was driving like a knob too, hence the penalties for causing unavoidable accidents. Was sutil able to stop or was momentum taking him forward?
 
Is anyone seeing Senna when it comes out on Friday? I'm trying to find a Scottish cinema that's showing it but none seem to be :(
 
Hamilton is the best thing to happen to F1 since Senna..... qualify by he's a racer.

Yes he has an ego, yes he feels it's his right to win, yes he wants to be the greatest, yes he makes mistakes.

Bloody exciting though. I remember Sennas first GP and saying that he was either going to be the greatest or kill himself trying. He probably would have been had I not unfortunately been right about the second thing.

Fortunately these days the cars are that much safer.....dosen't excuse Hamiltons lairy driving but let's face it........he's the only one who will get near Vettel this year.:clap::clap:
 
Yeah I agree with that, he and maybe webber are the only ones who can catch him, maybe even that Spanish bloke too

much is being made of hamiltons over-aggression trying to force passing moves around monaco, a lot of which is justified, but personally, i feel that it makes for a lot more exciting watching than a couple of years ago. I used to watch other racing series (gp2, btcc etc) and wished that some of the extravagent efforts at passing would be seen in f1. A lot more is at stake in f1 but its good to see that people are throwing caution to the wind and making f1 a good watching experience.
as for the red flag issues. i was at monaco on sunday to watch the race, and there was a massive air of disappointment throughout the whole crowd when it was announced that vettel and alonso could change tyres. I think we all felt that we were being denied one of the all time classic grandstand finished to a gp.
was still a very good day out despite that, and i would recommend it to anyone!
