I've read lots of threads where people say, "I find the foregound a bit distracting"

Maybe theres a rock, or a fence or something there, but in general, when I see these pics, a rock or a fence does not detract from what is a really nice pic.

When viewing these pics, is it impossible for the viewer to simply not look at the lower half of the pic or whatever....

Or is it just me......

There's no 'right' answer to this. As I understand it, if folks refer to the 'foreground being distracting', they perhaps mean that the balance of the shot is not as good as it could be - e.g. if you have a scenic picture of a lighthouse (in the medium distance), which is your main subject, against a wispy cloud sky (the background), and there's a brightly lit fence in the foreground, then the balance of the shot is tipped more towards the fence, which is not what was intended. If you then moved your shooting position so that the fence is in shadow, it is still there, but its impact is lessened, and so the eye is more naturally drawn towards the main subject instead.

Vivid colouring definitely plays a part in this too, reds & intense warm tones automatically draw the eye whereas lilacs, blues & cooler colours naturally recede into the back of an image unless they are very prominently featured. That's another reason why blown skies are such a distraction as they draw the eye to them instantly.

When someone posts an image they invite you to look at the whole image, not just some bits of it. With that in mind comments about foreground or background distractions are perfectly acceptable.

There's a fine line between an item of foreground interest and a distraction. Foreground interest should compliment the composition as well as (and sometimes very importantly) leading the eye into the shot.

An ill-conceived foreground will, of course, be distracting; but this isn't to say that there should not be a foreground !!!

Clear as mud?
