That's obvious. It's Man Utd's way of getting back on side with the FA.

As for the Terry captaincy, what should be more of a worry is that there seems to be no looking forward from Capello. Terry/Lampard/Gerrad and co are no longer the future for English football, there should be a look towards the team for next world cup and get a captain for that competition bedded in. This is what's happening (finally) with the Scotland team, and I hope that we see the benefits for it in the long run

Perhaps there's no agenda after all and he's just saying it as he sees it.

Like you say (and I said above) - It was a 50-50 ball and Evans clearly went for the ball. Unfortunately he went in with both feet off the ground so as ball and player moved he had no way of stopping himself going straight through Stuart Holden. There was no intent but you always run the risk of a red card going in like that.

Not quite sure how our defence is going to look now though.

City V Chelsea today - Can't decide what the best result would be.

I thought money and pay offs were the only reason anybody went to Chelsea :naughty:

Joking aside - Guus Hidink would probably be the next logical choice based on Chelsea's previous choices. I'd certainly be very surprised if they went down the route of a Martin O'Neill or David Moyes type appointment. Pep Guardiola might be an outside bet and the Jose Mourinho connection will always do the rounds.

Elsewhere, we have the Old Firm taking round in round 5 in the CIS Cup Final. After the barney last time round the police have warned players and managers to be on the best of behaviour. I don't think we'll have anything like that again as those Old Firm games happen every now and then but never concurrently. I expect a tame game (by Old Firm standards) and Strathclyde's finest having another busy afternoon dealing with the idiotic fans.
 
Enough about all the above. Will Chelsea show force today or fizzle out. Massive game in the catch up stakes. Also would really appreciate a goal update/running com as I can't get it here in Vietnam.

I can't believe the announcer at Stamford Bridge actually introduced Terry as 'England Captain' today.

Don't think it really matters who the captain is. Leaders tend to be leaders on the pitch regardless. Terry is probably no better or worse than any other choice.

But would you respect/follow him knowing what he did to a team mate? Great example to set the new boys, besides he is old and past it now, OK for club, but we need to blood new players for next competitions.

Easy one to answer that - Nope. The guy makes my skin crawl anyway regardless of what he did.

I'm just saying that the role of Captain in football is not that important compared to say captaincy in Cricket. I doubt Lampard, Gerrard, Ferdinand, Terry or anybody else in the England team would be any different on the pitch whether they were captain or not.

Ferdinand has injury problems, Lampard and Gerrard are often selected individually and Ashley Cole has just shot somebody LOL. If you want your captain to be somebody that's likely to always feature then that's Terry at the moment.

I keep saying it.... There are far too many players in that squad that are just not good enough. God, bring back Vermaelen, and get us a bloody goal keeper, what planet was Almunia on ??

i would say one better reason is his age and longevity in the squad over terry. In 4 years time terry could well be gone.

from what i hear about hart he is also a very vocal part of the team.

So could Hart, look how Robinson fell from grace. Just because Hart looks our best keeper now does not mean he will be the best in 4 years. You could easily have Foster or Carson having a great run and Hart losing form.

you misunderstood. In 4 years the likelihood of terry not being in the team is down to his age was my point.

when choosing a new captain I think it bodes well to pick someone who has a good chance of being in the team for a long time. Any one member could have a fall from grace so you can't use that as rationale but longevity in the squad due to age must be a plus point.
 
Probably not going to win any favours with Joe here but if you take into account -

Youth, Experience, Likelihood of involvement - Rooney has to be up there.

:lol: The way he's performed for England it's a wonder he is still even getting picked for the squad. It's a shame Capello seems to pick based on reputation rather than performance in an England kit!

Very true but picking on 'reputation' is hardly a new thing. When it's done for much older players I question it but for younger players then hopefully it pays off in time.

On a totally different subject - has anybody been listening to the debates for and against the return of standing ?

Yes. As a Liverpool fan, I'm all for 'safe standing'. People seem to think that it's a return to the old fashioned terraces like they have in the lower leagues. Safe standing works wonderfully well in Germany as seen below.

You have your own space as per normal and people can sit down at halftime whilst having a bit of scran. Superb :thumbs:

Germany also have normal terracing alongside safe standing like below at Signal Iduna Park where Dortmund play. 23,000 in that stand Wow!!

The German system certainly seems to work well - even returning to 'seated' for European games.

I guess it's been so long now that a lot of the younger fans of certain clubs in this country have no experience of standing. True - some of the grounds were as grim as sin and we were treated like cattle but I think there's certainly a demand for a modern approach to 'safe standing'.
 
Being from the smaller end of the Footballing scale, I have rarely been in stadiums where I can't stand so for me sitting down while watching football is a bit 'foreign' to me. Standing at football matches will always invoke strong feelings. I honestly think we will not see standing at top level games in the UK because of the hysteria that gets raised and the stigma that all football fans are skinhead illiterate thugs with “I love Hitler” tattooed across their hearts.

I figure this would be the case because Scotland had a debate about a couple of years ago about allowing the selling of alcohol at games in Scotland (has been banned since 1980...before I was born for crying out loud) and despite the fact that many fans can handle our drink and football at the same time, we are still been punished for something that happened over 30 years ago. Sadly I see no differnce when it comes to standing at games (which happens anyway)

BTW – crowded footage of a packed terracing at Vicky Park, these nights make football what it is, might want to turn the sound down though.

And how wrong is Capello - blaming Rio for the captaincy mess up -thats a good way to show support for your team, backing them up all the way.....????

And saying seeing John Terrys face when the armband went round the players upset him is stupid - he took the armband off him in the first place! And Terry made his own bed (well not quite his own...) so he has to lie in it.

The sooner the Italian goes the better!

Agree with all that.

Think England could find it tricky today.

The wife is in early stages of labour (we've just got back from the hospital) so may not see the match today.

She's having a bath at the moment so I've managed to catch the first half.

So far so good anyway........

We're hoping for the labour to move on a bit so we can go back to Community Midwife Centre in Perth for delivery later today / tonight. As her waters broke last night they will only allow her back up to midnight otherwise we'll have to go to hospital in Dundee.

Anyway - I'll keep you posted........

Well they certainly didn't find it tricky. Wales were an absolute shambles. Apart from the first 30 mins the rest of the match was like watching paint dry

i think he is, today he performed well i thought with some very well timed passes, especially the lofted one that picked darren bent out perfectly in the box. I have little respect for him though, but he does have a lot of talent
 
Hopefully some of the other squad players will get a chance on Tuesday. I think Rooney's suspended for the next competitive game so let's see some of the other strikers, and what does Baines have to do to get a chance? Today would have been ideal.

Good win for England tonight.

We got off to a great start which made what 'could' have been a tricky night a fairly straight forward result without playing that well.

Not sure what to make of Rooney myself. He keeps coming too deep but I really don't think he's at his best up front. I'm not sure who it could be but if we can find Englands equiv of Hernandez thn Rooney will do a fantastic No 10 job.

Whilst we're on the subject of annoying players - Craig Bellamy is some kind of 'forever angry' Norman Wisdom.

Missed all the football today as I was away up a hill - probably a good thing as I may have had a heart attack by the sounds of things.

Just caught up with the results and it would seem things worked out well for United.

How much did Man Utd pay the FA this week?

Vidic should have gone, if not a straight red then 2 bookables. The Man U penalty was a joke. Upson had arms by his side and was 1 yard from player who kicked it straight at his arm!!

Is it any wonder why refs get naff all respect?
