The Football Thread.......

football went insane a while back. but that's not why i watch it. i couldn't care less what they earn - right or wrong or whether it's value for money - i'm really not fussed.

all i want to do is see my team (who i have followed since i was about 6) win games. it's Man Utd by the way - there's nothing better for me than sitting in a boozer with 5 or 6 mates watching the match. the banter and exchange of opinions is fantastic, can't beat it.
i used to go to OT quite a lot, but my contact for tickets doesn't get them any more so i scrapped it. don't miss it at all. i scrapped my subscription to sky sports too... on the understanding with the missus that i can watch man u in the pub... good skills eh?

There was talk about us going in for Charlie Adam earlier this afternoon but that one seems to be one of the many transfer deadline day rumours.

I'd quite like to see him at OT but I don't think we'll see anybody coming in.

Liverpool have agreed a fee for Andy Carroll.

Man Utd will not be releasing Howard Webb.

I'm fairly sure Kenny has lost his marbles.

Guardian now reporting they have bid £14m for Charlie Adam!

+ still no bloody news on formica/rochina. im getting twitchy now. would be a real shame if we can't bring them in,.

still plenty of time yet.........

true, but both deals were said to be formalities and just needed submitting to the appropriate bodies.

we can never seem to do anything straight forward!

I'm fairly sure Kenny has lost his marbles.

They could finish the day with Andy Carrol, Charlie Adam & Luis Suarez.

That's got to be better than an injury prone striker (Torres) who doesn't even want to be at the club.

Liverpool were always going to get a decent price from Chelsea for Torres - Chelsea need to make their big Abramovich funded buys sooner rather than later as once the "Financial Fair Play" rules come into play and 'Chelsea' finances have to fund their buys - they'll will have to shop at Poundstretcher.

last time i checked, adam has had 6 good months at the top level. no way is he worth £14m. suarez isn't exactly as fit as a butchers dog, he's quite prone to injury just like torres. and carroll, well he's had a good year admittedly, but he's still unproven at the top level and quite the hot head. if that represents £70m of value, ill eat hay with a donkey!

I'm not saying it's good value - I personally hope they turn out to be flops at Anfield but with Torres it was a case of of all the financial eggs in one basket and Liverpool are needing to strengthen the team.

Andy caroll at liverpool is Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

and he's english, woohoo

Massive money being thrown around by Liverpool and potentially Chelsea but they both need to do it for different reasons. Liverpool obviously need to stabilise the team and make it competitive so they can move forward and Chelsea have an ageing team and cannot afford to miss out on a top 4 finish which with there current squad is definitely a possibility. Any more injuries and they have issues which with the age of their squad they are more at risk of than most.

That's not right. Under the financial fair play rules clubs have to amortise the transfer fee over the length of the contract (which is practice already) however you're right that financial fair play is a massive issue for Chelsea. They're still losing nigh on £50mil a year! Roman doesn't have much of a legacy to show for his £700mil....he still needs to build a new stadium at which point they might get somewhere close to being sustainable. Expensive hobby.....

And we thought Photography was expensive !

My post was just a wee poke at Chelsea really. City are now obviously a similar beast.

I think the whole Fair Play Issue is a fascinating development although I'll be keen to see just how the UEFA created 'Club Financial Control Panel' is made up.

Torres, Alelka and Drogba up front - Great options but can you imagine the sulks

looks like 48mil which means anelka wasnt part of the deal, shame, guess that frees up some cash for charlie adam

RE Liverpool strengthening. Why rush and panic buy now? They aren't going to go down, and they aren't going to get European football (well, defitiely not CL) so why not wait till the summer and buy better then?

This is panic buying at its best.

because when you want the players you want, you have to take them, the cash for torres makes the overall balance more reasonable, who knows what could happen to the players they were fter between now and the summer, look at gareth barry, didnt sign him when we had the chance and the moment passed

Transfer window restrictions really throw clubs in to a financial mess. Clubs trying to buy themselves the next big player, or a super star to get them out of trouble.

Personally i would like to see the early season window extended until end of september. Then the January window restricted to LOAN deals ONLY.

This would mean that clubs would not commit themselves to big contracts and then go down and have to honour them. Also remember that other clubs can then press the club in trouble to sell cheap as they know they need some money.

The whole deadline day thing is a farce designed to improve sales of newspapers and give the sports media something to do for 1 day.

Oh, by the way i am a huge football fan. Supported Man Utd for 20 years. But football needs to look after the small clubs which is currently not happening. Or football is going to go tits up with only a handful of BIG clubs controlling virtually everything in the game.

It probably is a panic buy in terms of the fee but that's the result of Torres' decision very late in the window, had to sign someone and Newcastle knew Liverpool were desperate and that there was big money available with Torres going..

Liverpool now rumoured to be in for Micah Richards for £20M

Andy Carroll for £35 mill is hardly strengthening... I read somewhere he was the 6th best Championship player last season!

Says how far LFC have slipped over the past couple of years or so, I can't help thinking this is panic buying at it's best...

Torres will come good again, Chelski have paid a lot for him but for sure he is the real deal!

I think him and Suarez will make a very good partnership.

Also, when you think that last year that money would go down as 1 years worth of debt interest then it puts it into perspective.

city knocked back lpools offer for richards. mcfc quoted as saying they have finished for the day, nothing in or out.

and as I type, Formica and Rochina are both confirmed.

happy days.

Apparently Liverpool fans are heartbroken that their star striker wants to leave.

I have full sympathy with them. They do not deserve to be left in the lurch by one of their own.

It's not like they threatened to kill Steven Gerrards family when he tried to better himself or anything like that...

the reason that joke doesn't work is because gerrard isn't a striker

You have to love Harry Redknapp (Wheeler Dealer) on the radio tonight. Transfer deadline day wouldn't be the same without him. A bit different to Man United's 'in house' style but he's always prepared to talk openly about players he was in for or deals that he knew about concerning other clubs.

As a Newcastle Fan, I can't help but feel LFC have paid way over the odds. He was knocking them in well last season yes, but Chopra was knocking them in in the championship too but couldn't make the step up to Premiership.

Carroll has knocked in a few goals, but he's missed a number of weeks injured too (bet he's fit this weekend for LFC!). He could turn into the real deal, BUT he carries far too much baggage with his off field antics. I for one am not disappointed in the sale. I am however disappointed we accepted so late and didn't get a chance to replace him. Although I do think we should be ok until we can buy wisely (Ashley permitting) in the summer.

The most humorous part of his transfer being that he is the full page picture for February in the Official Calendar

I feel bad for the magpies now after reading that carroll was kicked out the door. Seems like he didn't want to leave and is a bit miffed. Which is rare in footballers these days, most would have snapped up the chance to get a big fat wage packet each week, seems like he wanted to play for his home team.

No-one is going to argue they didn't pay over the odds for him, but when your main striker puts in a request so late thats what happens.

Not sure he was pushed out, he allegedly put in a transfer request. Suppose he was asked to do so, if he was so against it then why do so?

my take on it is, he's playing the victim while lining his pockets and inflating his ego.

Shell suits, Lonsdale, le coq sportif and now Andy Carroll.. Mike Ashley's been selling overpriced ***** to scousers for years..

Coffee sprayed

I wouldn't say it was panic buying. Liverpool will have full expected something like this to happen, they had offers in the summer too didn't they? Even then they'll have had plan, with a figure in mind what they would let him go for and a shortlist of players to bring in should that happen.

In reality, it's probably the best time for Liverpool to splash out on what could be their biggest transfer of 2011. It's January/February of a season where they're not going anywhere and was written off months ago. By buying Carroll now they can play him in every match (that he's fit) for the rest of the season, essentially he can have 7-8 months of competitive games, full pre-season & LFC training to get him up to speed and fitness that they want him.

If they'd waited until summer they might have got him cheaper/more expensive but if he finished the season on a high I'm certain they would've had other teams to compete with, as well as a negotiation that probably would've lasted most of the summer and only left them with a couple of weeks with him and inevitably leading to them bedding him as a sub striker for a few games. Not really ideal if they're going to put a championship challenge up with him as their main forward.

EDIT: I'm sure Liverpool are also thinking that it will help them with the "homegrown" rules too. But being an english player, I genuinely hope he does well at Liverpool, or anywhere he went at the top level to be honest.

the claims are that there was no transfer request at all, they just said there was.

I see Arsene Wenger kept his wallet firmly shut as usual.... I have a lot of respect for Wenger, but sometimes he has to wake up and realise that if Arsenal are really going to compete at the very top he will need to buy some "ready to run" talent and not obscure Europeans who can't make the grade.

Yes, he does have a record of buying players that we've never heard of cheaply and turning them nto stars, but quite a few don't make it to the full team, and it takes time.

Steve
