I'm not here to defend him
Well you are a bit. ;)

I would have brought him, do doubt about that, but if he doesn't fit into the team in his best positions, then he shouldn't be shoehorned in just because of his name and reputation. That has happened too many times in the past. You play the players in form in their positions.

Phill Neville getting lots of abuse for his commentary
It's not surprising really.
Absolutely... really terrible performance... dull and monotonous tone... doesn't speak in whole sentences... no insights and nothing interesting to say... always makes it sound as if he hasn't finished the sentence... even if he has...

He should be up top then ;)

As for defending him - I mean his selection needs no defending.

It's that assumption "that he's there on name and reputation" that is all wrong. At the end of the day he's there on merit and has done enough throughout the qualification to earn his place.

Where Woy fits him in (or pushes him to fit others in due to a lack of quality elsewhere) is another matter and one that the manager should be judged on.

Agreed - nice fella but (for those of us used to United) he's the dullest of the dull

I was quite happy with the performance and the result, especially as I had money on Italy to win 2-1 at odds of 10/1

My two national teams are England and France, and I can add Spain as my son is 1/4 Spanish. Two defeats so far, France looking good for the win though (hope that line does not come back to bite me). EDIT - 2-0 Looking very good, god bless goal line technology - it's a goal, oh no it isn't, oh yes it is!

Honduras - the 'Crazy Gang' of the World Cup.

RE England, I still felt positive after the match. I thought Italy's passing and movement at times was excellent, and we could not handle, which is a concern when playing against the better teams.

I agree with everyone else, thought Welbeck played really well- thought everyone was at least decent and some of the criticism of Baines is a bit over the top - I do agree with Cambsno though that not taking Cole may be a mistake.

The Rooney conundrum is an interesting one. He;s probably the only player in the team for who expectations are higher than anyone. Don't think it applies to Gerrard as much due to his less attacking role. Sturridge will play up top, and rightly so in my opinion. So where play him? He was really playing in a role more suited to Milner against Italy who were good down that side. I'm not sure what the answer is but I'd love to see him behind Sturridge with Sterling on one side and Barkley on the other.

It appears they are not sure how to use glt, it was a goal to the naked eye..

Gary Lineker, Clarence Seedorf, THierry Henry and ermmm Robbie Savage ;)

Loads of class, and a Welsh hit man :D

But at least the others are genuine footballers as opposed to a cheat!!

Funny that Suarez still gets stick over his handball but Henry gets away with his???

Both great players but It's a simple case of class.

Henry is a likable chap and his handball was a one off.

Suarez is disgusting and his handball is just one of many unsavoury incidents.

That said my family in Ireland aren't big fans of Thierry Henry ;)

Disappointed with Argentina tonight.

I didn't hold out much hope for Bosnia but they did themselves proud.

Maradona will be getting nervy with Messi moving closer to Robbie keane's World Cup goal tally.

Some light relief **contains swearing** of QPR's victory over Derby showcasing our errmmm popularity well

Missed all the other games tonight, looking forward to Ghana vs USA.

What a goal by Cahill!

Good game so far, especially for Australia. :)

Yes, absolute stunner. I thought the Dutch were quite poor in the first 30 mins, other than the goal from Robben...

Really enjoyed the Holland v Australia game.

Australia played really well and what a strike from Cahill.

Holland are certainly producing entertaining games so far although I suspect Spain Chile could be a good one.

Gotta laugh at Spain!!! Why Casillas is playing I will never know - tried to gift CL to Athletico, at fault v Holland yet still gets picked!!

Whilst I'm happy with the end result...I got to admit that Australia did very well, and a fantastic goal indeed by Cahill.....But luckily not enough....I'm quite pleased with another win...

Unbelievable to see Cameroon disintegrate before your eyes. Alex Song gets sent off for a crazy reaction to being run into, and Assou Ekotto tries headbut his team mate.

And to think Cameroon were threatening to boycott over their win bonuses before they came. And do you think part of the negotiations were for how much they'd get if they won the World Cup. :ROFLMAO:

Glenn Johnson can't defend to save his life. Ashley Cole should have been at left back no matter what the Cheryl lovers think. Gerrard should stop doing the big frown when he takes a free kick as I think it's impairing his aim. Terry should have been captain, Spud Rooney tries his best but just doesn't cut it any more.
Hopefully the above remarks mean we win tonight and I'll feel an idiot.... But a happy one...

Terry should have been there. I would gave had cole at rb and baines at lb.

Has Cole ever played at Right Back?

I wouldn't have taken Terry. There would probably have been a lot of stories about him, and/or his family.

Cole was a toss up for me. You have to take people who are in form, and playing for their clubs regularly, and Cole didn't do that last season. If he had gone, I wouldn't have minded. But if you are going to play Baines, then you may as well take a younger player to get some experience. While I agree with Shaw going, Flannigan from Liverpool may have been another idea because he can play Right or Left Back and so could have been a backup for Johnson and Baines. I don't know whether Cole or Shaw can play at RB.

Terry, Flannigan and Cole are not there though. I prefer to focus on the people that are there. :)

Gibbs would have been a better bet than Shaw as a 2nd LB

I had a dream.

England loose 4:3 - Rooney gets a hat trick and we don't have anybody to blame it all on ;)

We are just giving the ball away too much - Sterling needs to pass a bit more - that said we do look like we could score if we get our passing together, as do they.

Despite conceeding the goal - England looked better in the last 15-20mins of the first half.

They're lucky to still have 11 men on the pitch though.

Ref is awful. Foul after foul, no 2nd yellow. That said we are not putting too many passes together and welbeck and Rooney are not offering much. Be bold and let's put lambert and Barkley on for those two.

Uruguay are pressing well and we are not coping with that brilliantly. Just need to pass the ball around at the back from time to time, let Suarez chase if he wants, we do with him going off knackered.

I find our passing at times so frustrating - personally I'd like to see Wellbeck off from someone a bit better going forwards - Uruguay are not Italy going forwards. For the goal we had so many back I can't believe we conceded - great cross and header though I'll give them that.

All that said the game is still there for the taking, just need to up our quality a bit in the second half.

I'd leave Rooney on, I actually think he is playing ok, always looking for the ball and has been ok on it -played better than Sterling IMO so far.
