David Moyes has promised fans of Manchester United that they will be in a major European competition next year...even if he has to write the song himself .

Maybe SAF's plan was to get a manager that would make SAF look even better......

I know that's not really the case but I'm being slightly mischievous.

It shouldn't have even gone to pens but when it did I had no confidence in United's penalty takers tonight. Even so they should have done better. I think 5 random fans from both sets of fans could have managed more than 2:1

I feel a bit for Moyes - One daisy cutter on target which De Gea somehow fumbled. There must be a wax doll of Moyes somewhere with pins in o_O

United need key players back and hopefully the Mata deal will go through. More will still be needed though.

On the other hand - delighted for Sunderland and I hope they can pull it off against City (y)
 
How the hell can so many players miss the target from such close range?

If the keeper saves a penalty, then so be it, but how many missed the target from both sides.

Bloody shambollic.

Anyway, fair play to Sunderland, they beat Chelsea and Man United on the way, but I cannot see them turning City over. Though, on a one off game, who knows.
 
That must have been a great night for the Sunderland fans - did I hear 9000 at Old Trafford and 150 coaches laid on and paid for by the club? Does it mean they'll also qualify for Europe?

I doubt he will be taking a pay cut. And he should definitely get into the current Utd side. ;)

That was a very poor penalty shoot out from both sides. :eek: Pretty poor show some of the kids going up to take the pens, where were the experienced players? :thinking:

It's been a bad couple of weeks for pens if you include Puncheon's. ;)
 
I think they've doubled Mata's wages if the reports are true.

It will be a start as United are certainly lacking creativity.

Vidal would be choice for another midfield player plus a left back.

The arrival of Mata (IF it happens) probably means we could ship Rooney out in the summer but if we can get a consistent defence back plus RVP and Rooney playing for the remainder of this season, we should hopefully head in the right direction.

Looks like Chelsea many have snatched Salah from under Liverpool's noses now.
 
Wayne Rooney has been told he will not be allowed to leave to one of United's main rivals, which currently rules out Norwich and Southampton.
 
I'm still expecting PSG or similar to move on Mata.

Perhaps I'm just being an old cynic having seen it umpteen times before.

Only just seen the highlights - the Sunderland bench were right in my line of view, so I missed all the penalties.

Wigan weren't expected to beat citey in the FA Cup last year, so there's no reason why Sunderland can't beat them this year.

If Salah goes to Chel$ki then a lucky escape for Liverpool. With the number of midfield players Chel$ki have, he'd be going there to take the cash, and probably spend a lot of time on the bench. It's OK moving for the cash, but you'd want to play as well imho. I mean Mata is probably leaving because he isn't playing regularly. :rolleyes:

Brenton saying the Salah deal isn't dead yet which is seemingly what Chelsea want to conclude before anything can happen on the Mata deal.

Fingers crossed for Lukaku that his injury isn't that serious. Accidentally hit by his own player, and it didn't look too bad. He looked weird with short hair btw. :eek:

A much needed result for Swansea.
 
I never had a good word for Tony Pulis at Stoke, he made them into a bunch of thugs IMO, but he's certainly done some good at Palace. Whether he can sustain the momentum over the rest of the season is another thing though.

Looked like Mata had a good debut last night, he would of been a great buy for anyone TBH and I really can't see why he was left out at Chelski so much. Class will always show and will always attract interest though. He would of been a great signing for Liverpool IMO and could of taken over from Gerrard without too much difficulty.

Great result for Liverpool last night, always looked dangerous on the break, won the ball back well, played with great pace and took the goals well. Could of had a few more if they'd been a bit luckier. Memo to SG.. keep taking the spot kicks yourself. I just wish they could be as decisive in their transfers as they are in front of goal. So frustrating that we keep paying our money and earning the owners pots of money but they don't seem willing to part with any of it. Chelsea, Utd, City etc all seem to be able to identify a player they want, bid on him and sign him within a couple of days, usually before any other team has time to react. With Liverpool they seem to let everybody know and dawdle too long until someone else (Spuds and Chelski usually) steps in and buys him. Latest rumour is Yevhen Konoplyanka from Dnipro, played well in the Ukraine game against England in 2012 but I've not seen anything else from him, probably end up as another squad player who'll go out on loan after 6 months. Another is Tom Ince, who's talking to half the premier league, while a DM and a defender would make good business too.

Bizarre injury for Lukaku too, looks like it could keep him out for a while. He has his leg in a cast today which could be a big blow to Martinez's first season. IMO they've played better in his first season than they ever did under Moyes without spending a major amount. I must admit to some 'uncertain' feelings going into this derby.

Another great result for the title race was Southampton's draw against Arsenal, a certain 'game of two halves' by all accounts, with most of the Arsenal team not turning up until the second half. I thought Southampton had won it near the end after Flamini's dismissal but Szczesny held on for a couple of great saves.

And an important result for Swansea, who have been in freefall for a while, but have gone up to mid table with the win over Fulham. I wonder if a mid table finish would be enough for Laudrup to build on or would the fickle finger of fate leave him elsewhere for next season. Exciting stuff going on in Norwich last night as well, not much in football skills but the boxing wasn't bad.

A couple of big games going on in London tonight as well, a derby that could end up in an avalanche or a stalemate and a North South match that could end up anything from 6-0 in either direction.
 
I always admired what Pullis did, remember that like Big Sam he took a club who were not a top flight club and got them to finish cleaar of relegation each season
 
I always felt the Stoke long ball game was over hyped, as people like to put teams into pigeon holes. They were more than a long ball team and changed their style over Pulis' reign. And they were looking a good mid table team until they started losing the form which led to Pulis leaving.

He did an amazing job to bring Stoke up, and an even better to keep them comfortably up. For a lot of teams outside the top 6-10 teams, and definitely all those in the Championship, that is the best you could hope for. Hope it goes well for him at Palace.

Agreed.

I'll admit to a slight hatred of Mark Hughes may be clouding my judgement due to his utterly inept spell 'in charge' of QPR, however if I was a Stoke fan I'd be worried now. They hardly win, Sunderland and Palace are seemingly on the up, I think West Ham can stay up, Fulham who knows. I don't like saying I'd like other teams to be relegated, but I would like Hughes to be. ;) Going to be interesting at the bottom as well as the top this year.
 
Sorry I've not updated the points for this yet, will try to in the next couple of weeks, but for now to remind you what your predictions were:

Nearly everyone predicted Hull to go down, and of course they still could, but looking good so far. Same for Palace. And no-one had Fulham in trouble.

Nearly everyone had Man Utd in their top 3, still possible but increasingly unlikely. No-one, not even the gunners fans had Arsenal in the top 3 - again still possible but so far performing above TP expert expectation!

Plenty of time to go of course for things to turn around at the top and bottom.

Spurs did not deserve that scoreline, but we press on, Chelsea and Arsenal results go for us, who knows, we may win it.

I did not expect this at all, new manager in, but he has us playing well.

We need the strike force fit for the Chelsea and Barca games.
 
The sooner the rules are simplified the better for all concerned. We have dropped lucky with a couple of decisions recently (Newcastle and Tottenham matches) but it's due to confusion over 'phases' in the offside rules. In each case, attacking players have either tried to touch the ball (Adebayor last night) and just missed, or moved out of the way of a moving ball (Newcastle game, forgot which player) when without shifting he would have blocked the shot, so both are clearly 'interfering with play', but given the way the rules are currently interpreted, mass confusion reigns.

Rose was unlucky to give away the penalty, but again, the powers that be need to do something about players going down soft, when the actual contact is not enough to knock a grown man over, let alone a physically strong one. It is supposed to be a contact sport after all. They manage all right staying upright at all other times. A red card is ridiculous as well, far too big a punishment.

That said, we were awesome for the first half hour, and deserved the win
