I don't think excuses can be made for either tackle.
Whenever you go in to a tackle studs showing with your knee locked straight you run the risk of causing serious injury. It basically comes down to whether the opposition player has their studs in the ground or not at the time of the impact.
Yes, I'm sure Arsenal have been guilty of the same too (I'm thinking Cesc v Ward, though McCarthy himself said that was a fair challenge) and they're not exempt from my scorn if they make reckless lunges.
