It will be good for football if he does, as I think he is tallent, just wasn't in the right team

No one doubts RVP is talented, and will do very well at united, but to say
he was at the wrong team ..... Lol!! Then again, if he scores more for united this season then he did for Arsenal last season you could be right.

I've heard of this 'panic buying' thing - tell me more about it ;)

well it usually happens in the january transfer window - aka andy carroll

but in this instance it's less of a time related panic and more of a "we had an embarassing season and we need to catch up with city and chelsea" kind of panic. ;)

Not really 'panic' then.

Saha will sign for sunderland. You heard it here first. Exclusive!

I heard something about that yesterday. I've always liked Saha. Good player on his day - he just never seems able to put enough of a run together to do himself justice.

it was probably tom's source ringing you

well, you tell me. You were cnvinced they'd never pay over 20m for an oldie- but they did.

There are still mixed stories about the fee in terms of the proportion of the fee being possible add ons. Some are still quoting £15m rising to £22m depending on apps / performances etc. Others saying £24m. Arsenal were after £30m but I think that was when they thought he was considering City.

Whatever the case - I'm like you and said at the time that I (if not United) would have paid £25m anyway based on the ages of our other strikers.

At the time we were about to spend big on Moura. Once that one got away I suspect the goal posts shifted.

Any Reading fans on here?

I'm sure most can guess my team.

Where does the signing of RVP leave Hernandez, welbeck, berbatov, macheda, bebe, henriquez and a whole host of academy players hoping to get their shot soon? I imagine Fergie has a job on his hand making all the strikers feel valued by the club with such a big name coming in and presumably jumping ahead of them in the selection order. I can't see all those players being there after the January window. I'm just not sure it's the addition United needed, but who am I to argue with Fergie's decision making?!

Yeah, this is something that I have discussed with my mates and the same goes for City - between they have a ridiculous amount of strikers on their books with it looking unlikely anyone will be leaving this August. I really thought Berba wouldn't be a Utd player after last season, but that seems to have gone a bit stagnant.

The key difference between Arsenal and Utd in regards to RVP is that Arsenals starting 11 was built around him, this won't be the case under Fergie.

no but he'll play 3 strikers

De Gea
rafeal Smalling Jones evra
valencia carrick/Cleverly young/nani
welbeck rooney van persie

likely with rooney sitting behind welbeck and RVP

at least that's how i'd play them

My view is that Rooney, RVP (if he signs), Hernandez and Welbeck will be what you class as the 4'strikers'

Berbatov will be off at some point if the above 4 all stay.

Henriquez is for the future and is to be loaned from what I gather. Possibly through the Antwerp connection although he said if loaned he would like to stay at Universidad. Bebe is there for a laugh and Macheda is failing to impress since returning from loan.

Putting the 4 strikers (Rooney, RVP, Hernandez, Welbeck) to one side - there are still a lot of attacking midfield players Young, Valencia, Nani, Kagawa forward of midfield players like Carrick, Cleverley, Anderson, Powell, Scholes and Giggs.

With 3 or 4 players already missing at the back (Jones, Smalling, Evans, Twin - defensive cover (rather than selection options in attack) is what concerns me most going into the start of the season. Valencia will probably be filling in at RB again with Rio, Vidic and Evra.

No riposte from me other than I could watch Sky Sports News too and make wild/educated assumptions...... but I don't have SSN.

sky sports news!!!!!!

Are you kidding? I have a source feeding me this info - how else would I have known that Brenden rodgers was facetiming with Jack Butland earlier today?

If I knew what facetiming was I would try and give a humorous answer.

Which brings me to the point about predictions - I think i'm the only one or maybe one other who has made them for the top and bottom 6 for al's spreadsheet. pull your fingers out people

Have got Tom's - Joe I'll repost but said for this year it is the entire league predictions as there is not enough to differentiate with just the top 6 and bottom 6, so you'll need to expand on yours, we need 1-20 positions :)

So, are we up for another Premier League prediction table? Last year's results here, though we started after the season had commenced:

TP_League_Final.JPG

There was not much in the differentiating of points last year so I'd suggest we change it and predict the whole table with scores as following:

Correctly predicted in bottom 3 or top 6 - 1 point
Correctly predicted in exact place - 3 bonus points (does not have to be in bottom 3 or top 6).

All entries in by lunchtime on the 18th August - I'll then collate into an XLS so I can update the scores easily each week.

I'll just need your 1-20.

Thanks for the reminder Joe, if you want to enter this year's predictions entries posted before KO on Sat - if you want to hide your entry until all others are in you can PM me, if not simply post in this thread.

Ok I'll post mine, I may revise before the deadline but now my thoughts are

1 Man Utd
2 Man City
3 Arsenal
4 Liverpool
5 Chelsea
6 Tottenham
7 Everton
8 Newcastle
9 Sunderland
10 QPR
11 Stoke
12 Fulham
13 West Brom
14 Aston Villa
15 West Ham
16 Norwich
17 Southampton
18 Wigan
19 Swansea
20 Reading

Perhaps a little optimistic with QPR but why not! Bottom 6 I may change a few times more, can't really make my mind up, especially with how the promoted teams did last year.

Final teams and changes have to be made before KO Sat.

As an aside if there was enough interest happy to run a championship one.

Sky Sports News reporting Barton going to Marseille on one year loan - Barton not given a shirt number by QPR so looks like on his way somewhere else for at least 6 months if not longer.

Was just going to post the same. Stéphane Mbia coming the other way, pinch me!! :D

I really hope that happens, I know who is getting the better deal! I'm not sure who is doing our scouting and deals, but they deserve a serious payrise, we've done some great business this summer for not much money (compared to some)

Park £2m
Diakite £3.5m
Hoilett - likely under £4m
Johnson - Free
Fabio - Loan
Nelson - Free (possibly more debatable but good for us)
Green - Free
Mbia - Loan possibly

When you think SWP and Barton (if he did stay) would not be first choice anymore, compared to this time last year - still in dreamland! :D

Kyle Bartley has completed a move to Swansea. If ever there was a lesson in how to leave with respect just look at his timeline on twitter!

It does seem to be that SWP is very much in Sparky's plans though and he's score a couple of decent goals in pre-season. He's also been given the 11 shirt so we may be seeing quite a bit of him.

He's very much a confidence player so I hope those goals will spark a bit of a revival fo him. As for Barton, I get the feeling that, by the end of the season, he'll be surplus to requirements and we'll be able to quietly move him on. Well, that's what I'm hoping anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I quite like SWP. He works a lot harder than I realised and never shies away from asking for the ball - you can't fault his workrate and if you have that I've no issue with you. Hopefully he will get a few goals \ assists- he will have the players around him now and pace all over so people will find it harder to double up on him.

He got quite a drubbing on the QPR messageboards last season. One guy ended up blowing a gasket and deleting his account over it!

He did indeed, then again some of the people on our message boards are a little, errm, explosive. :D

So instead of selling Agger we sign an unknown winger. Tommy?
