I don't think it's that doom and gloom. If you gave me a choice between the squad we had this time last year and the squad we have today I'd take today's. Of course it's disappointing to not see a new face or two in the final day of excitement, but we're the Arsenal and we'll do what we're good at; making the very best of what we have to compete at a standard far above our financial investment. Anything less than a PL or CL win for City and Chelsea is an utter travesty for them with the finances at their disposal.
Had Giroud, Podolski and Cazorla arrived today people would be going wild and be delighted, but the club had the foresight to prepare for the departures that were frankly inevitable.
I really don't buy into this whole mentality of some Arsenal fans who boo and jeer with discontent at all we do. Be proud of what we have achieved. We have a fantastic stadium that will last us decades, almost paid off all of our debt obligations, arguably the most promising youth development system anywhere and a manager who has delivered the goods year in year out with absolute commitment to the club even when his national side, Real Madrid and Brazil came calling.
Ok, we don't have the financial might of the oil giants, or the reckless spending of Liverpool last season - what a lot of good it did them by the way - but we do have a heap of talent, an incredible coaching team that knows how to get the very best from the talent we have. Now is the time to get behind the team and support them through thick and thin, help them through the tough games and rejoice with them when it all comes good. If someone can't do that for their team, then they don't deserve to call themselves a Gooner.
Up the Arsenal!
Good passionate post
I know we have the ongoing 'Wenger out' joke and folk are talking about how long it's been since you've won anything but remember this barren period coincides with Chelsea and City being bought by people with more money that they know what to do with. Simply remove them and we're 'as we were' when it comes to results.
Arsenal could either adopt a financial suicide mission chasing City and Chelsea or play a clever game to keep the books in order and stay ahead of those other clubs competing for Champions League income. United can't compete either and nor should we.
I'll not get into City and Chelsea as it's not their money and the owners can do what they want but to put Wenger's sustainable 4th place into context - look at the alternative approach - Liverpool for example. Not all their signings are listed here but it's an example of a club that have spent a fortune to go backwards.
