Actually Mike, take a look at the figures for the last 2 years and by the way, we only bought Jones the once ;)

United payed out only 10 million more than city when you factor in outgoing players 75 to 65 ish
Chelsea, over 100
liverpool also about 75

so really, United havent really done anything near the scale of city in recent years

http://transferleague.co.uk/

Spurs have always featured quite highly in the buying of players, but in the last few years we've made more selling than buying.

I thought you were referring to previous years being on a shoestring :p

United's current squad value is between city and chelsea.
If you go back a few years, city's would be much much less, but chelsea still up at United's level. However, a good chunk on United's would have been through players coming through the ranks.

No doubt Utd have built on the golden generation coming through the ranks, but since the start of the Premier League Utd have spent significantly. Yes, teams like Liverpool , Arsenal and Spurs have spent lots of money as well, but Utd had that generation of players to build on and add to, whereas, for the most part, the other teams have been changing managers, and as a consequence, turning over players as new managers try and make their mark. Utd haven't had that. They have steadily added players of £10m £30m+ value steadily over the years.

Liverpool hadn't bought a player over £20m+ till Torres in 2007, Utd had their first £20m+ player in 2001 (Juan Veron) and also bought van Nistelrooy for £19m the same year. And followed that up with Ferdinand and Rooney as £20m+, but had many at £10m+. And all this was adding to a winning team. Add quality to quality, and you would expect to do well.

Chel$ki and City may have spent huge amounts in recent years, but Utd have been spending highly steadily since the start of the Premier League era.

As for the 70's and 80's for Liverpool, they spent towards the end of the 80's, but I don't remember them spending excessively during the 70's. Not from what I recall anyway.

Ah, so now it's a bad thing to keep faith with a manager? Amazing

Who said it was a bad thing to keep faith with the manager?

I think Utd prove what can happen if you do keep faith with a manager. And Liverpool's success in the 60's. 70's and 80's was built in no small part on having steady management. Shankly to Paisley to Fagan to Dalglish was pretty much seamless, and success continued. There was no plan in place for when Dalglish left, as I think he, and the club, assumed he would be there for many years. That was 31 years of stability, which helped towards the success imho. Obviously the managers involved were quality people as well. ;)

I've always said it will be interesting to see what happens to Utd when Ferguson leaves. Unlike Liverpool, of the past, they don't seem to have anyone in house to take over. New managers make changes. I think Chel$ki are the exception in making changes and staying successful, and they have had to throw a lot of money at players to do it. And judging by this season, that may be catching up with them. :suspect:

It doesn't always work obviously, and deciding when to change is not a decision I'd like to make, especially if a team is not involved in a relegation battle.

Whatever sums of money the various clubs have spent and where it came from - I'm more than happy with how United have been run off the pitch to allow the investment we've made - and even more happy with the resulting success we've had on the pitch compared to the rest.

Ha ha - Liverpool 2 up after 17 mins. They should be appealing for the Suarez ban to be increased

Gary Linekar said:
Newcastle 0-2 Liverpool

"Liverpool lead 2-0 and are now expected to appeal that the Luis Suarez ban should be lengthened."

How did liverpool do during suarez's last ban?

Coutinho is turning out to be a great signing. He's a fantastic player to watch too. Really rate him from the bits I've seen (admittedly not loads, but enough).

You misread my post as usual, I was saying I agree that biting is weird.

Ah Joe, once again you take just a little bit

Is is being "weird" enough justification to warrant a longer ban than racially abusing someone of headbutting them?

As I said - the FA have justified why the ban was 10 matches, in minute detail.

What really needs to be looked at is the rule that says if the ref saw it, or noted it in the match report, then no further action can be taken. It's too easy for the officials to miss something or get things wrong. In the case of violent play I think all incidents should be looked at by the FA so we do get some consistency.

In Suarez's case - if the ref saw it then it would have been a sending off (his maximum punishment) and automatic 3 match ban, yet the FA considers it a 10 match ban. This is where the inconsistency and point to be argued lies. The FA should have a panel looking at these incidents, after all every premiership and championship match is televised/recorded. As the top level of players, they should be setting a better example.

Lets face it - it wasn't that long ago that Newcastle were furious about the wigan tackle. The FA stated “At least one of the match officials saw the coming together, though not the full extent of the challenge. In these circumstances retrospective action cannot be taken.”

I'm sorry that law is an ass.

The sooner these deliberately high tackles are stamped out the game the better. And yes Joe that goes for Suarez too.

Oh and when I say Suarez, I think this is the worse aspect of his play. This was just a 2 minute search.

And to illustrate the point again 2012 season:

2011 season
Suarez rakes his studs down Kompany's shin then goes to ground like he's been shot, then clutches his head to make out he was the injured party

Alright, what are Newcastle doing to themselves in the 2nd half of this season? It's the worst I've seen them for years! Bet they turn up against Arsenal though

:agree:

Well I didn't see that result coming.

Liverpool were brilliant today.

As mentioned earlier, Coutinho is looking like a quality player, and straight from the off too. He looks small and lightweight, but he's hard to get off the ball, and I don't know how he gets so much power into his shots. His pass to Sturridge for his first goal was a delightful lift between the two defenders. :)

I don't know what to say about Newcastle, it seems since they gave Pardew the long contract they've gone so bad. The fans understandably were not happy at the end, and some fans were leaving quite early.

Looks like Wolves going down 2 seasons in a row.

Did anyone read about the Brentford v Doncaster game - Brentford missed a pen in the 94th minute that, if no further goals scored after that would have got them promoted. Doncaster then scored in the 99th minute to seal their own promotion - amazing. Congratulations Doncaster anyway, hope they still play the great football they did last time I saw them. Good luck in the playoffs Brentford, would be good to play you next season.

The damage done to Liverpool football club has been devastating today. They should have won that game 10-0. Winning only 6-0 was a shambles and showed how the damage has been immense.

yep - no lack of bite today.

Alas - too little too late - again.

Title over but most of my bets are still alive - just

1 - United beat Liverpool to 20 titles - made 20 years ago at (7-18)- in the bag

2 - Everton to finish above Liverpool - in the mix

3 - Liverpool to finish nearer bottom than top - 30 points from top, 30 points from bottom - still in the mix (Hadn't planned on early title win so that will nobble me)

4 - Swansea to finish above Southampton - still in the mix

Wenger likened Van Persie’s desire for titles to a woman fearing time was running out on her chances of motherhood and admits the Dutchman felt he had a better chance of winning trophies at Manchester United.

“He had arrived at the age of 29 and thought, ‘can we win the championship here or do I have more chances to win it somewhere else’?” said Wenger, ahead of Sunday's reunion with Van Persie as new champions United visit the Emirates.

“There’s a kind of timescale - like for a woman who has no baby at 39. She starts to think I have not much time left now.”

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Sounds to me like Wenger can relate to why RVP moved on. He's probably stuck at Arsenal now though ;)

Too much being made of RVP returning to Arsenal.

I'm a bit miffed that our season is over to be honest. Don't get me wrong - I obviously wanted that title in the bag but I'd love tomorrow's game to be the one we needed for the title.

As it stands - there's talk of us playing a weaker team. Wenger seems to be a Fergie buddy these days so who knows.

Much has been said of that silly guard or honour. I'm all for a wee clap but come on.

Will RVP even play ?

Part of me wants max points for the season but I expect a drippy end to the season from United.

I'm wanting Arsenal to get max points between now and the end of the season so I'm a bit ho-hum - looking forward to next season.

There's too much made of RVP returning to Arsenal? I've not heard a peep of such a thing, even in the twittersphere where there's a new rumour everyday, and I can't see any reason why it would happen.

Incidentally, today's rumour was the possible return of Fabregas, with Barca apparently looking to offload him in the summer. Now that's a move I would welcome with open arms, but it's head in the clouds type stuff and Barca would never allow it.

Fergie said a few days ago he was desperate for a few fringe/younger players to feel they played a part in their campaign this season so it looks like a few of those might get brought in for your remaining games. Whether RVP starts the game and gets to walk the guard of honour or is a substitute out of respect remains an interesting point to see.

Arsenal are now in a strong position for 4th, but tomorrow certainly won't be an easy game, and then we have QPR who will either sink without a trace or Harry will get them really motivated and they'll fly out of the blocks at us, Wigan always like to put on a show towards the end of the season and Newcastle concerns me ever since that 4-4 comeback they made. They also have a score to settle for earlier in the season and have had all their defensive frailties exposed in a similar way to how Spurs exposed ours and we've been excellent since that reality check. I could see the same happening to Newcastle for the remainder of their games.

Realistically I think we're looking at 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. I wouldn't dare guess which game will result in which. That may or may not be enough. It's going right to the wire that's for sure!

By RVP 'return' I meant going back to Arsenal to play against them.

I can't see Fergie playing a strong team - if he has a chance to blood youth then he will do it or at least experiment.

I'd love record points but the title is done.

I so hope Arsenal get max points (a draw tomorrow max though) from now on as I have a lot of respect for Arsenal and Wenger.

Leeds, Villa, Blackburn, Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea, City - we've had competition from each but the Arsenal years were the most special.

I think it's because we've both operated within our means and we've both had to fend off the ££££ clubs time and time again.

Oh I see what you mean with return now!

I quite agree. I have no problem seeing United lift the trophy again because you deserve it. I also don't have much of a problem seeing a player of RVP's quality leave so that his career doesn't pass by completely absent of silverware.

Hopefully an active summer in the transfer market will see us more competitive again. I do think we're on the verge of a very, very good squad.

Part of me wants max points for the season but I expect a drippy end to the season from United.

Part of me wants United to lose the remaining games and city to finish an agonising point behind. In thirty odd years time when they win the title again, city fans will look back foolishly thinking they were close to winning two on the trot :D

Rumour in the twittersphere that RVP will not only start but be captain. It'll actually be quite funny if that's the case. At least it'll stamp out the suggestion that Wenger and Fergie are becoming chums :D

Can anyone explain why Cesar is on the bench for QPR again? He's probably been their best player all season and Green is an accident waiting to happen!

0-0 after what sounds like a bore-draw between Reading & QPR.

Can't say I'll miss either of them. No doubt 'Arry will be back to ruin another club without a single criticism.

Agree. Qpr are a great example of how not to run a club. Reading should not have sacked McDermott IMO although I am a fan of Adkins.

I never like to see any teams get relegated.

Indeed. It especially irks me when these comments come from the supporters of clubs who have never known (and will probably never know) *** relegation feels like. There are plenty of QPR fans who would agree that the club has been poorly run but relegation hurts the fans more than anyone else. Owners, managers and players can move onto other things and forget all about little old QPR, we cannot. Some people should hink about that the next time they feel like whinging on about there team struggling to qualifying for the Champions League!

Neville took the words out of my mouth - poor first half performance from United but should really have at least 3 goals.
