The Fitness thread

Wahaaaa, another 5k done. Wasn't appreciably easier but I was a bit quicker overall (though I'm still consciously trying I keep it steady; I ain't racing).
Had sore legs since Sundays run so I've done some proper stretches today and already they feel much better.
As ie said before, your encouragement and advice has been invaluable. Many thanks guys

Well done Mads! Onwards and upwards.

Things I learned today: wearing a onesie made of "fun" fur doesn't actually make you run faster. However, it does make you really popular with the under 5s.

It really did happen........with me and Ms Strachan.......

I'm jealous, I've had a tremendous crush on her since I were a lad.

Now, forgive me TP for I have sinned... I went out with the intention of doing another 5k, but changed to the next step in the trek to 10k, four sets of 10 minute runs split by one minute walks... seemed a bit extreme to me, but hey, thats what the app said... now for the stupid bit... 5 minutes in my phone chimes in telling me my pace is about 9 and three quarter minutes a mile... I aim for ten and a half normally, so instead of slowing down like I damn well know I should, I keep going, determined to get a fastest mile, which I do and by some margin...
I was completely stuffed for the rest of it and found the next two miles really hard going, though I took care to pay close attention to my legs, for any twinges of any kind.
Thankfully I completed the full 4 10 minute runs, but aside from being really tired, I was and still am rather angry with myself for that first mile.
So I beg of you, kindly fitness types of TP, to forgive my transgression of stupidity.

Tonight I did hill repeats. A teenager on a bike foolishly set off up the hill flat out just as I started my last run. I think even he was surprised when I overtook him :D

Day 2 of couch to 10k - sigh it seems I'm no longer 21 - still in about 8 months time I'm running a 20 mile all terrain race in aid of kids with type 1 diabetes so there's... um '...plenty of time' ( :runaway:) to get back into the shape I was when we did the 'iron man' (in 1993).

Still as I've just said on facebook if my friend's son can walk upstairs with his walking stick with his joints eating themselves from the inside (he has autoimmune arthritis age 4 as a consequence of type 1) and not really understanding why it hurts - then I can get out there and f*****g well run whether I feel like it or not.

Day 3 of couch to 10 k completed - this isn't getting any easier yet , though I'm sure it will in time - as I was running up the big f*** off hill (as I'm training for the grizzly there's no point in not starting as I mean to go on) I was repeating the mantra "Oakley [my friend's son] can't quit so I won't quit" in my head. Why oh why did I ever let myself get this out of shape ? :(

parkrun this week was fun :)

I know I have a tendency to start too fast when running with others so I really tried to keep it slow. Then on the second time back from the church (it's at the top of a nasty hill - we go there twice for double the fun) I got boxed in and couldn't overtake the guy in front of me. Eventually at about the 4k mark on the flat I overtook him and I could tell he was annoyed :) Flat section round the field I and he was right on my heels.

Then we got to the final corner and a straight run for the line. I just knew he was going to try and overtake me so.......250m dead sprint for the line :D He was nowhere and I got a PB of 24:25. Next week could be interesting....

Day 4 of couch to 10k complete, 223 days to the grizzly, £30 raised for kids with type diabetes (£4970 to go ) - I guess it gets harder before it gets easier (its also too damn hot for running 24.5 C at 8.30 in the evening :(

Heat can really slow you down. On the upside, keep it up and come the autumn when the temperature drops you will be like a whippet.

Take the training steady and maybe save the big hills for when you are a bit fitter and your body has got used to the flat. They can really take it out of you, I did a 5 miler on friday where the first 4 was a steady climb, followed by a rapid descent. My legs are still battered now.

Let me know your sponsorship details and I promise I'll chip-in for your goal event. Diabetes is a cause close to my heart, 'fortunately' I didn't develop it until I was in my early 20's when I could handle the self management a lot better. Small mercy that I got through my childhood without it.

Cheers Chris - my just giving page is https://www.justgiving.com/Run-for-Oakley/ - the really distressing thing about kids with type 1 is all the other autoimmune s*** they have to put up with in consequence. My friends little boy has autoimmune arthritis as a consequence of the type 1 and he has to walk with a stick , and is due an operation to drain all the corrosive fluid out of his kneecaps. - its really not fair that a 4 y/o should have to go through all that

and apparently there are 29 thousand kids with type 1 in the UK :(

Bsm, would you mind if I share that sponsorship link with a few friends? It's one f those causes a few of them feel strongly about and I suspect may wish to donate.

On a side note... I don't know if you'll all remember, back in October my wife collapsed while trying to do the couch to 5k, prompting hospital treatment and whatnot.
She started it again but with me as her running buddy (got a new pushchair for the baern to come along).
Runs 1&2 went really well, run 3 not so much. During the warm down walk she had a seizure warning so we got her somewhere safe. The seizure wasn't as bad as some she's had but she thought she'd cracked running without fitting.
That was Friday so I skipped parkrun Saturday to stay with her.
Saw a dr yesterday who was intrigued without being dismissive since exercise causing seizures really isn't common, but she's told my wife to go a bit steady, take precautions like going with someone who knows what to do f she fits etc, and upped her anti seizure meds but is more than happy for my wife to continue running and report back in a couple of months.

Today I went out running while she was at a slimming class, and took the baern with me, thinking I'd aim for half hour since I've not done a long buggy run... Somehow I've managed 5k in 34 minutes and feel ok, not tons worse than running without the buggy.

I remember that...

Is she running because she likes running or because she believes it will help lose weight??

Is she running because she likes running or because she believes it will help lose weight??

Initially to lose weight but this time round because she's properly enjoying it

Eta: actually, no, she wanted to get a bit fitter

mads feel free to share the link as widely as possible - I need all the help I can get to reach £5k

Sorry to hear about your wife , that sounds properly scary - what Phil is getting at is that exercise alone isn't a great weight loser , it will get her fitter , but not necessarily slimmer (btw could the seizures be dehydration / heat related it is f*****g hot to be running at present). The key to weight loss is what she eats (in very simple terms)

Indeed. Some exercise is such a small small small (almost not worth doing) part of weight loss, if that were the reason, I'd probably opt for a safer alternative Woth her seizures in mind. Probably something like a home workout in a large spacious room, which would be less likely to break a bone if a seizure were to happen.

At least until she has been a long enough time to warrant a more "risky" form of exercise.

I know the doctor was happy but I'd still opt for a safer alternative for a while (both can give the same fitness increases so why not?).

Aye we're wondering if hydration played a part along with terrible nights sleep previously.
Weight loss wise she's doing slimming world, and doing well too.
With regards to the running she'll be running with me to keep her safe because she's absolutely dead set on doing it after seeing how much I enjoy it and enjoying the runs she's done so far.

Seizure wise shed gone six years without any then had the one in October after pushing herself really hard while doing week1... Again the first 2 runs he did with me went fine, 3rd one was after she'd pushed herself harder again.

My missus is doing slimming world and running too - one thing i would note is that if she's cut out a lot of sugary carbs to stay within the syn limit she does need to make sure she's fueling up on slow release (and syn free) carbs at least a couple of hours before running , as low blood glucose could be another trigger factor for seizures.

and yes drink plenty of water and electtrolytes - especially in this heat (I'm currently running in the evenings or early morning when its cooler - its currently 30 degrees outside which would be brutal to run in)

Seizures are tricky ones. I don't believe low blood sugar would be the trigger eince the body will make sufficient amount*.

Dehydration could be a factor but who knows... they're
weird things seizures.
*assuming you aren't using more glucose than you can produce (exercise that lasts longer than 5mins or so without resting or slowing down).

rather like you do during a 30 minute run really - end of the day none of us are doctors and Mrs Adept really needs formal medical advice ( i know mads said that the doc was sceptical about an exercise link but if she's worried seeking a second opinion is always an option)

The mrs is keen to continue... Her dosage has been increased and been given some advice to reduce the seizure risk. Dr reckons that's the first thing the neurologist would do after the huge wait for referral

So yeah, I just entered a 3 hour endurance trail race. It's supposed to be for relay teams of 2 or 3 but I elected to go for for the "legend" category. I have 4 1/2 weeks to train. Trail running's easy, right?

Best of luck...I don't think that would be for me - I just got overtaken in greenwich park walking uphill by a 80 year old woman holding a walking stick!

Day 5 of couch to 10k complete , 221 days to the Grizzly - can I just say that its too b*****d hot for this. (I'm sure that hill is getting steeper

Had a great comedy run on Wednesday night. In Paris with work staying near Gare de L'Est. It's quite near Canal Saint-Antoine so I thought it would be a nice run up and down the side of this. Can you spot where I went wrong?

Anyway, my half-hour run was followed by a half-hour largely aimless walk trying to find my hotel. Luckily I stumbled into Place de la Republique where there were a few tourist maps where I could get my bearings. It was a tad warm too (average 30°C) just to add to the fun. What a numpty....

Um, looks like you turned left a little early :)

Other than that, 84 degrees is a little toasty.....

Had my longest run in, well, ever, this morning. http://www.strava.com/activities/170627551 It was fairly warm.

Yip, left too soon. I made a point of remembering a yellow fronted building on the corner when I first turned onto the canal. Unfortunately there was another yellow fronted building further south. Je suis un pillock.

Well done on the ten miler. It's a while since I've done one, not since before my Achilles injury I don't think.

Wow, really impressed by all the activity going on here so thought I would join in and share. I have been doing MTBing for years and started running late last year. I must say I really enjoy my local parkrun, so much fun on a saturday morning. It is amazing how one gets roped into a few 10k also and have now signed to do a half-marathon in 10 weeks time:banana:

September is going to be a very active month with the Poole questar (MTB, kayak, trail running) event also

Welcome to the madhouse amaFotho.

I'm up early for a Saturday, had to have enough time for breakfast to get into my system before I hit up parkrun in a while.
I must say I'm a bit nervous which I know isn't needed, but it's te first time I'll have run with people I don't know.

So... I came in at 103rd out of 122, started right at the back since I figured there'd be noone slower than me, so I managed an overall time of... 32:39, though the nike app reckons I did the 5k in a personal best of 30:54 and did 3.3 miles overall.
Cant complain at that I suppose :)

Well played...
I gave up using phone apps, just too unreliable - now using a Garmin watch
I did not do parkrun yesterday as a more important superrugby semifinal was one although probably should have as my team did not play very well. Anyway, I did get out mid morning for a short run....it was too hot to start some distance work but I will have to soon.

So, decided I need to take my running up a level as need to do some proper training for my half marathon and am looking at joining a local running club. Had my first 'training session' with ERC which was interesting...I joined the medium paced 6mile group not knowing what to expect as I had not idea what a 9 min/mile pace was since I am used to min/km pace! Thankfully it was bang on my usual pace so I did not look like a muppet slowing everyone down. Apparently the Thursday eve sessions are more serious with interval training so will give that a go before deciding on signing up or not.

On another note, my wife tried an 'insanity' class on Sunday - crazy girl

Nice - I'm scared to join a running club. BTW the reports I hear tell me that Insanity classes are a lot easier than the DVDs. Apparently you can take breaks and stuff!

Annoyingly my 3 hour endurance race has been cancelled. Particularly vexed as I had worked out a plan to get it to 35k. I'm so cross I might enter the local half marathon here instead (it's roughly the same day) however
1) It keeps getting called "challenging" in all the reviews - also, there's talk of a "killer" hill at mile 10.
2) It's 5 days before what would otherwise be my first half marathon. Two in a week sounds ambitious.

Time for a thread revival!

I've been loving the time on my feet recently, had some great silly hot runs on holiday in early August in the Algarve (32°C+) and have been steadily gaining pace since I got off the statin a few months ago.

But today I had to invoke rule #2. (If it hurts, stop). Fortunately not an injury though. Mind was willing, body said no way. 3km dog slow and I slunk home and had a kip instead. Blood sugars are all over the place too so looks like I'm fighting something off.

Good to hear everyone else is making steady progress though. Won't be long before the autumn/winter gear will have to come out of storage...
